  1. It was Aug. 1 in 1984 that the Cubs took over first place for good, and the Cardinals also overtook the Mets for 2nd place. The pattern was a bit different, though; the Cubs spent much of the first part of the season in first place (a few days in April, all but 7 days in May, and about half of June). It was really just the second half of June and the last three weeks of July that the Cubs were continuously out of first.
  2. I started following baseball in 1969, the year of the infamous Cubs' collapse. This year is very much starting to remind me of that year, but with the roles reversed. The Brewers this year are much like the Cubs in 1969, opening up a huge lead by early summer but then frettering it away. And the Cubs' recent surge reminds me very much of the Mets' surge in 1969. The tide seems to have started turning earlier this year (it was August that the Mets started making their move in 1969). And it's an interesting sidebar that 1969 was the Brewers' (then Seattle Pilots) expansion year.
  3. Hendry can't be that dumb, can he? Yes he can. This is Hendry we're talking about.
  4. Anything that hurts a potential Wild Card competitor can't be all bad. :D
  5. Gallagher! TBD must be talented; he's pitching for both Tennessee and Boise on the same day.
  6. Two fairly good starts in a row. Maybe Veal's starting to put it together.
  7. The Brewers wouldn't have lost to the Cardinals this afternoon if they still had Balfour.
  8. I care about one thing, and that is whether a player can help the Cubs win this year. I don't care about the past; bygones are bygones.
  9. There's no way Hendry is dumb enough to trade Pie for Laird, especially since the bullpen isn't really a need. Either somebody's enjoying a belated April Fool's joke or there's more to the trade than just Laird. If it's Pie for Tex and Laird then we'll talk. :D
  10. I see we've already had a Packers fan vote. :D
  11. He was a huge bust, but that's not the point of the poll, so there's no sense in arguing that point for the eleventy billionth time. That is true; the poll is for least favorite, not worst.
  12. Most leagues that I know of don't count return production into a person's stats. I'm sure you can get a specialized league that might do it, but a standard one won't. Yahoo leagues count return yardage and touchdowns. At least that's an option; I'm not sure if it's the default.
  13. One nice thing about Hester switching to offense is that he should be available in fantasy football leagues. His return production alone whould make it worth picking him regardless of how much he does as a receiver his first year.
  14. Yep, "Mayday" was a Cub in 2001 and 2002.
  15. How do you think they will do this year?
  16. Not sure. They said we'd receive an email letting us know if we did. I know the voting begins on Aug 6, so I'm guessing some time before then. Probably one of the safest guesses one can have. :D
  17. Several hours later and Yahoo still hasn't corrected the headline.
  18. It definitely was that. I guess what I was actually thinking was that it was technically two separate trades (Expos-A's and Cubs-A's) but in effect a three-team trade. if i remember, though, it was a couple days in the making. baseball-reference.com says both trades happened 12/15, but I recall them happening on consecutive days Here's how it went down according to the 2004 Cubs' media guide: 12/16--Barrett acquired from Oakland for PTBNL 12/20--Barrett non-tendered for 2005 12/21--Barrett signed as a free agent; Miller and cash traded to Oakland for PTBNL No mention of PTBNL settlement; I suspect the PTBNL owed each way were simply cancelled out. This effectively made it Miller and cash for Barrett. This is the way I remember it; the ability of the Cubs to re-sign Barrett as a free agent (rather than him being able to file for arbitration) was the key to the Miller trade. If Barrett didn't sign with the Cubs they would have kept Miller and sent another player to Oakland to complete the Barrett trade.

  21. Yes it was a trade. He was acquired from Oakland shortly after Oakland acquired him from Montreal. These were actually packaged as two separate trades, but in effect it was Damian Miller for Barrett. Right. Forgot about that. Actually according to Baseball Reference it was one trade (I thought it was two for some reason). Miller and cash to the As for Barrett. Maybe it was originally Miller for a PTBNL, with Barrett becoming that player.
  22. If you're going by gameday, I doubt they provide updates I doubt anything would change until the official lineup cards are turned in to the umpires.
  23. I've got it on DirecTV channel 739, and I'm also in North Carolina (I know, hard to figure that out from my screen name :D ).
