  1. Don Kessinger is available. He plays leadoff AND shortstop. And Don Kessinger was good. :D
  2. Dammit, I KNEW I shouldn't have upgraded my Extra Innings subscription to add the Superfan package. The Cubs are 0-2 since I did. :x
  3. Good outings for me today from Suppan and especially Bannister. Maddux, not so much. Tough decision for my 7th start this week: Jackson against the Yankees, or a second start from Harang. OK, not really a tough decision. Bob Howry is now available on a waiver wire near you. :D
  4. I selfishly hope Bassett is back. I watched him a lot in high school and always seemed like a good kid when I talked to him. On the other hand, I hope the door hits Ellis on the way out. Not sure what message it sends allowing either back, though. If what I've read about the dismissals being due to drug use are true then they both need to be gone. Crean needs to send out a very loud message early that lack of discipline and violating rules is a thing of the past.
  5. I think you are. After 100 years I think most of us just want a championship the quickest way possible.
  6. Going back several ears ago, that could have stood for Maddux and Morgan (at one time they were the Cubs' top two starters).
  7. Actually, he's made more than one (see 1st base). I agree with your overall point, though, that Hendry has generally been a failure.
  8. I learned that from one of the trivia quizzes cubbieinexile used to post on the cubs.com board. Robinson was the first black HIRED as a major league manager, but Banks was the first to ACT in that capacity. Similar to the common misconception that Jackie Robinson was the first black player in major league history (he actually was the first in the 20th century, but there was one in the 19th century).
  9. Yep; if they thought the agreement was unfair they shouldn't have agreed to those terms in the first place. They could have continued negotiating.
  10. That reminds me of a story I once read about Woody Hayes (I don't know if it's true or not). Supposedly he and at least one of his assistants were driving back home to Ohio from Michigan (I think it was a recruiting trip). An assistant who was driving said they needed to stop for gas. Hayes said no; they'd push the car across the state line if they ran out of gas, but they would not buy one drop of gas in Michigan. I don't recall if they actually did run out of gas or not, but if they did it was undoubtedly the assistant(s) who got to do the pushing, not Hayes.
  11. Too bad there isn't a way to lock the poll from further voting but still keep the thread open for discussion. At least I don't think that can be done.
  12. This joke has carried over to the cubs.com board.
  13. The nerve of them, thinking an NCAA regional championship game featuring the top-ranked women's team in the country is more important than a minor league exhibition game.
  14. I'd do it if Jenks is much of an upgrade over your current closers. Pujols' elbow makes him a big question mark this year.
  15. My, how times have changed when Pudge is considered a good Hacking Mass option.
  16. I finally ordered mine and should get it within 7-10 business days. It costs $21.95 (including shipping) if ordered through the Cubs' merchandise dept. (1-800-248-9467). It has been selling for much more than that through eBay (some have sold for over $30 with shipping on top of that). I think some people stock up when attending spring games in Arizona (many of them are listed as shipping from Arizona), then selling them at inflated prices to people who don't know you can buy it directly from the Cubs.
  17. Probably 1994 (even though the Cubs lost), when they got home runs from Tuffy Rhodes, Tuffy Rhodes, and Tuffy Rhodes. It looked like they suddenly had another power hitter. He then hit only five more dingers the rest of the year.
  18. Winless for March. Time for someone to start up fireloupiniella.com.
  19. The Cubs should have put a clause in his new contract requiring him to drink a specified amount of water each game he pitches.
  20. Come on, you know the policy is to blame CT, not Roast. :D
  21. I have nothing against Marmol closing. I have everything against someone writing off Wood because of one game.
  22. Not gonna happen. I think McCallum would be promoted rather than letting Dakich keep the job after the mess at the end of the season.
  23. So how stupid is the NFL? I mean, Broncos-Raiders on Monday Night? I realize that it's a rivalry and all but the Chargers-Broncos (since they obviously want a West Coast game) would have been a heck of a lot better than Denver-Oakland. The NFL wants to save the Chargers-Broncos game for a better time slot. They aren't going to put a great game in a slot that starts at 10:15 at night on the East Coast. It hasn't really been a good matchup any of the 3 years they've had this late game. Solution: Do away with the late game altogether.
  24. OK, this thread has obviously become worthless.
  25. My team: AAAA All-Stars C--Jason Kendall 1B--Richie Sexson 2B--Aaron Miles 3B--Joe Crede SS--Ryan Theriot LF--Gary Matthews Jr. CF--Corey Patterson RF--Darin Erstad P--Adam Eaton P--Jason Jennings You have until midnight Pacific time on Friday, April 11 to join or make roster changes. At that time rosters are frozen for the rest of the season.
