  1. He's been an ass to the media in the past and reportedly doesn't take coaching really well. Jason Marquis Version 2.
  2. There's a discussion about this in Cubs' Discussions.
  3. I just don't see the Cubs taking any chances with Wood this year. They have a good thing going with him as closer. Maybe he can remain healthy as a starter, but I'm unconvinced of that and don't see the Cubs taking a chance on that this year. IF the Cubs were to consider trying him as a starter again I think they'd do it the same way as they did with Dempster, stretching him out in Spring Training and seeing how it goes.
  4. My second favorite team is usually whatever long-time sucking team seems to be the current Cinderella. Right now it's Tampa Bay. A couple of years ago it was Detroit. When they suddenly started contending after decades of sucking it was Cleveland. I know that's bandwagoning, but I think that's acceptable for a second favorite team.
  5. It's not at all a given that Hoff will be back first. It all depends on when Ward is ready to return. There will definitely be a position player added and the pitching staff cut back to 12 before the interleague road games when a DH will be needed. If Ward is ready to return by then it will be him; otherwise it will be Hoff.
  6. Whoa. I thought this year was Laffey's first season. Never knew he had any starts prior to this year. Amazing what you can learn by actually looking at the player's page. :D
  7. I think those moves are fine; you just squeaked by. If Laffey had one more start last year he would have lost minor league eligibility then and you wouldn't have been able to do that.
  8. Pass on Mussina. The last thing the Cubs need is to take a chance on a once-good pitcher who is over the hill. They've done too much of that over the years; not this year.
  9. He didn't play yesterday.
  10. I'm not 100% sure of the rules. Maybe someone can have a minority stake in more than one team as long as he isn't majority owner for either team.
  11. That seems to be his MO: Have decent first year, get swelled ego and stop listening to coaches, have crappy year, move on to next team, repeat. Yep. Isn't that what the Cards said about this guy? Just stopped listening. Yep; reportedly he stopped listening to Duncan his last year with the Cardinals (the year he was left off of the postseason roster).
  12. Monday. Thanks Soul. Now sit him Sunday as well and I'll bet he comes back refreshed until the All Star break. I'd anticipate the Cubs sitting several players on Sunday to give them two days off to rest, especially if they still have a comfortable margin and don't feel any urgency to win. Or perhaps rest a few players on Sunday and a few more on Tuesday.
  13. And I have Theriot on my team. :(
  14. That seems to be his MO: Have decent first year, get swelled ego and stop listening to coaches, have crappy year, move on to next team, repeat.
  15. We don't need people, you know, clogging the bases. It's called hitting, not walking. Have you ever seen a top 10 walking?
  16. I'm certainly not defending him, but doesn't that make him the best 5th starter in baseball? Too bad he doesn't have a 5th starter's contract. :(
  17. Just a comment on notation. Usually when someone says 3+ that means 3 or more, so I think he's OK on that. Having said that, that's about the only thing he's said on the entire topic I can defend him on.
  18. Only tied for the lead. Sham! If he were a REAL closer he'd have the lead to himself.
  19. Considering the recent track record of Cubs' high draft picks that may not be much of a consolation.
  20. Signed as a free agent 5/14/08 (Chicago pays pro-rated portion of $0.39M ML minimum - about $0.29M - with SD paying about $5.71M and St. Louis paying $2M) That totals, roughly, the $8 mil he's due this season per the two-year extension he signed with the Cards following 2006. http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/2005/01/chicago-cubs_112114177768677294.html What confused me was that I forgot he was traded by the Cardinals to the Padres; for some reason I was thinking he signed as a free agent. I didn't pay much attention at the time.
  21. You can't have it back. :P
  22. Isn't even better, then, that the Cards are doing the same? Are they still? I thought that his contract with the Cardinals only ran through last year and he signed a new contract with the Padres this year. If I'm wrong and this is still the contract he signed with the Cardinals, then yes, that is even sweeter.
