  1. Zambrano will likely be a better pitcher than my dead cat. HUH? I think hes equating the production of a Johnson/Edmonds platoon to his dead cat, thereby confirming that Murton/Hoffpauir would indeed be better than Johnson/Edmonds, as is my understanding. But what does that have to do with Zambrano pitching?
  2. You wouldn't take Sandberg over Derosa? Derosa's good, but he's not Sandberg. I'd take Dernier over Reed Johnson too for CF duties. Mostly, I think the '84 Cubs compare better in terms of starting pitching. And that counts for plenty. I think I would take our offense so far this year over '84 though, I agree with Kyle on that. Yeah, I think I misread his post the first time. He was talking about the offense as a whole, not position-for-position. That I would agree with.

  4. Bump. We have a new champion (Hull, Mikita, and Esposito).
  5. who was that in the booth with Len and Bob?Bobby Hull. His 7th inning stretch was the worst I have ever heard. And even he knew it himself.
  6. Fair enough. We had a favorable outcome as a result of the moves. Hindsight it 20/20 and all that. :P Regardless of the outcome of today's game I think it was the right move from the standpoint of managing for the series. I would have gladly taken losing today, then winning tomorrow and Sunday to take 3 of 4 (although I'll much more gladly take a sweep).
  7. Marmol is the best relief pitcher in baseball right now.
  8. What a game! Down 9-1, Cubs basically concede the game by resting Lee and Soto (which I agreed with, BTW; I wanted them rested so the Cubs could win Saturday and Sunday and take 3 of 4), and still they win. Something magical is definitely happening when the comeback is largely due to home runs from the likes of Edmonds and Blanco. To me this has much the same feel as the famous Sandberg game against St. Louis in 1984. Something BIG is happening this year, folks.
  9. I'll still go with the non-competitive years. For all the pain and anguish, I need Cubs playoff baseball in my life every few years. Even if it ends in disaster. Being crappy year after year is a joyless existence. Agreed. I'd rather have my heart torn out in October than to not even care.
  10. The 1985 Cubs were 35-19 at this point and finished 77-84. The 1969 Cubs were 37-17 at this point and finished 92-70. I think there's a real good chance the '85 Cubs would have fared much better had all 5 starters not gone down at one point, I distinctly remember Rick Sutcliffe pulling his hammy trying to beat out a grounder. Try 100% chance. There's no way they wouldn't have done much better with major league starting pitchers rather than AA pitchers. Enough better to have returned to the playoffs? That's what we'll never know, although they would have had a good chance.
  11. Another way of putting it: The Cubs are dead last in the Fecal League standings. :D

  13. Good for us if today was the start of a trend for Edmonds rather than the proverbial blind squirrel finding the nut. I'm not holding my breath for that to happen.
  14. I went with Soto, but to me this year feels more like a team accomplishment as opposed to a clear-cut MVP.
  15. One 130 pitch start, OK. Repeated 120+ pitch starts, not OK.
  16. This topic was just begging to be converted into a poll.
  17. I warned that the insults were to stop, yet they continued.
  18. Another fact is that Bradley is guaranteed to spend some quality time on the DL. I'll pass.

    Week 9

At the moment I have a 1/4 point lead but a 5-2 remaining pitching start disadvantage. I don't like my chances this week. The last thing I needed was for Harang to put up double-digit negative points tonight. :x

    Week 9

yeah, martinez is right up there. delmon young's been disappointing, but he wasn't coming off a 50 hr season like fielder. verlander's been pretty awful too. I have both Martinez and Young on my team in another league. We're all probably biased toward our own underachievers. Martinez is worse, since he's my only catcher while I have other options I can use at OF until (or if) Young gets untracked.
  21. I forgot how the Cubs got him from Philly? Trade near the end of Spring Training in 1984. The Cubs got Sarge along with Bob Dernier and Porfi Altamirano for Bill Campbell and Mike Diaz. Oh yeah, Dernier, how could I forget that? Dal really put one past his ex employer. And Green had already stolen Sandberg from the Phillies. As much as people have joked about Hendry's trading with Pittsburgh, Green did just as much (if not more) with Philadelphia back then. I remember thinking of the Cubs as Philadelphia West back then.
