  1. Why rush Colvin though? He was a raw player coming into pro baseball and 25 isn't an age where you either make it or you wash out. If he was forcing his way into the lineup, I could understand aggressively trying to get him into the lineup, but last year between A+ and AA, he hit .812. He still has options, is only 25 and hasn't torn up professional pitching to this point. Patience is the best strategy with him right now, I think. If he shows improvement this season, then I might consider dealing Kosuke in the offseason, but I don't see the positive in making the team significantly worse if we don't get a good deal in return. Next year is Colvin's make or break year to me. However if we can shed Fukudome's large contract I wouldn't be opposed to seeing what he can do. If he proves too raw Nady will be back soon enough. I wouldn't trade Fukudome unless we eat less than 2-3 million of the contract which means he would be very unlikely to be traded if I was the GM. I wouldn't be shopping him but I wouldn't not listen to offers either. Like I said I like Fukudome and think he is undervalued by many because they expected .300+ and 20+ HR's but he is still vastly over payed and I would consider any trade that allows us to shed that contract.
  2. Really? If both Fontenot and Baker fail we will move Theriot over and call up Castro. Plus Guzman is pretty bad at the plate. He has a decent average but everything else is crap. His career OBP is .307 and career OPS is below .700. I'm pretty sure Castro is OPS .650-.700 at worst right now so why pay millions to have a guy do it and lose Fukudome in the process?
  3. Yeah yeah yeah. Might be different if my team had it's best player for even a portion of the season. The fact that Houston is above .500 without Yao and having not played one of our best players until he was traded and then have the guy we got in return get injured right away (plus the loss of Landry in the trade) is as good as it can get. I am happy we aren't going to make playoffs because without Yao we wouldn't be winning any championship so I would rather miss and get a chance in the lottery for a top 10 pick.
  4. I see where you're coming from, but without a long-term option almost ready to start in right, I don't see the benefit to significantly weakening the position - unless the Nats gave us a really good deal. Here's the 2011 FA OF class per Cot's: The only players I might take over Kosuke in that group are Dunn, Hawpe, Crawford and Werth. Barring a Colvin breakout or a trade, we're looking at two years (at least) of poor right field production if we trade Kosuke. Agreed but I would be making that trade based on Colvin at the least getting his shot in the second year. He will be 25 at the end of the year so it is he is at the point that he needs to be given an everyday job and see if he sinks or swims. As long as Fukudome is here he will never get that shot. I prefer Fukudome this season as I think Colvin can be 4th OF for a year to get used to MLB pitching but next year Colvin needs to get his shot unless Fukudome improves off of his first two years which I think is quite possible.
  5. He wrote a 900 page paper on the FCC. No but I did have a media law prof that worked for the FCC for nearly a decade.
  6. Dye OPS: .793 Giles OPS: .548 (61 games) Kosuke OPS: .796 Those are last year's numbers for each player. I'd take Kosuke significantly over either of the other two even before taking defense into account (which Kosuke is way, way better than both of them). If I'm trading Kosuke and replacing him with either, I want a good return from the Nats to even consider it. I realize all that but it would get him off the books giving us more money for the trade deadline (bring in two players perhaps) and more money in FA for next season. I am a Fukudome fan but I am not opposed to picking up say 2 million of his contract and then signing Dye or Giles for 1 million. That said I highly doubt the Nats would make that trade and I am almost certain Dye and Giles won't take a contract worth that little.
  7. If they chose to they could easily get away with it. They almost got away with a massive fine for a unplanned f-bomb on live TV by Bono. In a case like this the guys in the truck see it and then 20 seconds later decide to show it in slow mo. If the FCC wanted to they could do it but they never will nor should they.
  8. Could be the rare dislocated elbow. I know I've seen it before and remember thinking how the heck was there nothing broken. I can't remember who that was though. I'm pretty sure it was 3 or 4 years ago.
  9. Damn. Was hoping he would kiss him.
  10. Ouch. Wasn't too bad until it went into slow mo with his arm flopping around unnaturally. I am one of those that is fascinated with arm/leg breaking vids but I still don't understand why the guys in the truck always decide to replay it in slow mo. To be quite honest the FCC could get away with fining a station for it. You have time to not show it and if there was a show on a network that showed arms and legs being snapped before safe harbor I would think the FCC would have an issue with it.
  11. The cutting of Cust seems a bit weird but Fox and him are redundant. Fox is a bit better defensively, more versatile, younger with lots of potential and likely to be able to do the great power and nothing else that Cust has done for a couple years. Fox could do much better than Cust but at the minimum Fox should be able to do what Cust has done in recent years so why keep a guy like Cust who can really only DH on the team and eating a roster spot? Fox hasn't been good this Spring but in the last couple games he started hitting and knocking the ball out so I'm guessing that is why Cust is being released now.
  12. If I knew that Colvin was ready or that we could get Dye or Giles for extremely cheap I would trade Fukudome and be willing to pay a small portion of the salary. But those would all most likely make us worse and judging from what the owner said last week we aren't in need of money and won't be unwilling to add salary at the trade deadline.
  13. Basically how I feel. If Nats want to take his big salary off our hands I am all for it. If we have to eat a portion of the contract just to get rid of one of our few lefty batters and our best option in RF right now then I am not for it.
  14. I wouldn't mind seeing his name spelled correctly in the thread title. As for him in the bullpen I'm not sure if I mind that right now. He's got some great stuff if he can ever control it so I'm not opposed to putting him in the bullpen and see if he can stick. That said I would much prefer the Cubs stop messing with him and let him sit in AAA as a starter all season and only be called up if it for starting games. I think the constantly switching back and forth has hampered his development.
  15. I'd say 99%, with the other 1% being Duke fans. Yeah but I don't see how this is different than any other Duke game. Duke is a polarizing team like the Yankees. You are either a fan or you hate them. Every game Duke plays it is 99% rooting against them and the other 1% being the Duke fans.
  16. Enough dude. Stop trolling. Making one joke is OK. Responding to every post made with a pointless post that adds nothing to the thread and solely posted to further annoy other posters is against the rules. For someone with so few posts you may want to watch it.
  17. I could be wrong but Butler in the championship is better than Michigan State as far as viewers go. I think a lot of people will really want to watch an small conference underdog because it rarely happens. I also think Michigan State in the championship again without much of a chance against WVU or Duke would cause a lot of people to tune out just as having OSU in the BCS Championship two years in a row killed ratings.
  18. I agree with all but the power comment. He doesn't have any great HR hitters other than Fielder but almost all his players have decent power. Mauer has great power for a C, Fielder is top 3 in the bigs, Jeter is top 5 for his position, and then Lind, Jones, Ibanez and Hawpe are all 20-30 HR guys. Really the only guys he has that don't have good power for their position are Cabrera and Coghlan.
  19. I'm not sad for him. Getting drunk and going out on a balcony is asking for it. I'm sad for his family and friends and for the fact he was so young and thus likely would have learned later what to do and not do when drinking. If I'm mad about something it's his parents and the parents that went on the trip. I would never allow my kid to go to Panama City Beach until they are out of my house and making their own decisions.
  20. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=5052588 Ralph Boldin done for rest of Spring and perhaps more. He injured his knee and all coach Hope could say was it was "serious." All I can say is crap, crap and crap.
  21. i kinda agree with him on that, though. if it's one percent per OPS+ point - like the albert pujols example of being 44% better than the average player - then why not just have the average player be 0 and the OPS+ represent the actual percentage? seems like that's easier to understand than 188. Eh I don't know. Maybe it's because I learned it that way, but I feel like having 100 as a benchmark and rating them above or below 100 is a good way to make it understandable. Saying Albert Pujols is 44% better than the average player just doesn't really appeal to me for whatever reason. Maybe it's just me but it's more difficult for me to quantify that in my head than looking at 188 and comparing it to someone with 166 or 110 or whatever. Simmons way is easier if you are just introducing the stat. Everyone knows exactly what 44% means without having to explain anything. If you tell someone who doesn't know OPS+ that someone is at 90 they will probably assume that is pretty good. With the current way you must explain that 100 is the starting point. With Simmons' way you don't have to explain anything.
  22. April Fool's was yesterday. You don't have to hide your feelings for me anymore.
  23. That was my reaction. I saw this thread and for awhile I avoided going and reading it because in general Simmons annoys the crap out of me. However, the column was very well done and his critiques made sense.
