2008 International Free Agent Market
RedFlash replied to CaliforniaRaisin's topic in Cubs Minor League Talk
Holy crap! Somebody get that kid to a McDonald's! Nah....get him to hang out with Carlos Zambrano. He'll be up to 200 lbs before 2008 is over. -
IDK is the White Sox will even get 92 wins in 08. I mean, that division is top loaded with Detroit and Cleveland. Not to mention KC should be further along in their development (heck, I could see KC finishing ahead of the White Sox this yr). Not to mention to win 92 games in the AL, would require the White Sox to basically win 75% of the games against the Yanks/Red Sox/Blue Jays to a degree/Angels/Mariners/Tigers/Indians. And quite frankly, I don't believe the White Sox are talented enough to win half the games against those teams, much less win the Wild Card.

Reds Hot After Blanton
RedFlash replied to RammyFanny's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
It's Joe Blanton, not Jake Peavy. If Beane gets that package, he's the greatest GM ever. I would fire Jim Hendry and hired Billy Beane IMMEDIATELY, if Beane could pull that trade off. -
Edward Salcedo
RedFlash replied to ThePenguin11's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
First off, he's 16 not 6. Secondly, what potential have the Cubs been waiting on? The Cubs have never had a good farm system outside of a few years earlier in this decade. And the main reason the Cubs have sucked for most of our lives is because they don't take chances on potential like this enough. They routinely spend at the top 5-7 of all teams in baseball and have nothing to show for it because they can't find and develop talent like this. I should say...around a decade. No team is going to see the kid's potential, till he's atleast 20. I mean, look how long it's taken Felix Pie to develop, and he still not there. I don't mind the Cubs taking chances, but calculated chances. Is this Salcedo kid legitimately talented, or is this a case of Boras overhyping ANOTHER young player? Spending essentially 1st rd money on a kid you have no clue on how well he will perform is not a chance I want the Cubs to get in on. And I realize the Cubs need some SS prospects, but overpaying an unproven SS prospect....is NOT the way to do it. Exactly. This is an even bigger risk than spending a lot of money on a first round SS out of high school who is raw and unproven but has a lot of tools. Luis Montanez says hello.... If the kid is WONDERFULLY talented, then I could see the Cubs going after him, but if you have even the slightest doubt...it's not worth throwing money away, even if it's not mine. -
Red- This came from a couple of ex-players who still have VERY strong connections inside the program. They're extremely reliable and get me info 2-3 days before it normally comes out. Interestingly enough, Josh Jenkins was also a silent commit. When his d-bag asst. coach found this out, they pulled out all the stops in W. Virginia, including offering a job (conditionally, I'm sure) to his brother as a graduate assistant. I credit this one to the slimebag Doc Holliday. On the other hand, NO ONE knew where TJ Bryant was going. None of the ex-players, and certainly no one who coached at Lincoln High (my alma mater where I still keep in touch with many of the athletic staff and faculty). Should be interesting, however. SEC had a strong class in all directions, as did Clemson and Miami. As an FSU fan I'm not happy about what we'll be facing every year. Perhaps...but Andrew Bone is as reliable to Alabama football, as Bruce Miles is to this board. Which is high praise, and if he says that Lester/Jones were not a packaged deal, and Jones was never SERIOUSLY consider FSU, I will take his word for it, as he has been right on the money for the past 2 yrs I think ONE PERSON got an inclination of where Bryant was going, and his name is current Alabama commit Melvin Ray. I have nothing against FSU, I really don't, but I do believe Bowden is starting to hold the program back. I have the utmost respect to Bobby and JoePa but both really do need to retired.

(Let me preface my statement by saying, I know the Cubs need more depth at the MI positions, but) How is it that the Indians are smart, and the Cubs are stupid for not getting in on a 16 SS prospect, who is going to command more then what alot of early MLB draft picks would demand? I understand the Cubs need some semblance of a talent at SS, but at what cost? If I am the Cubs, I'm not dealing with Boras based on POTENTIAL, like this Salcedo, I rather deal with Boras on clients who can help the Cubs, within the next decade (which is how long, the Salcedo will take to developed, IF he develops at all). Salcedo is the future Wilson Betemit, nice player and all, but not worth the hype (real or Boras). And this argument might make sense if, you know, the Cobs hadn't blown all that cash on Samardzija. I wasn't for the Cubs signing Samardzija at the deal they did. To me Shark has Chad Hutchinson written all over him. And even if they signed Shark to a reasonable deal, I still wouldn't try to get in on Salcedo. Besides, Shark's contract has no bearing on what the Cubs could do with Salcedo. I get the feeling the Cubs just don't think he's worth the money and the trouble. And quite frankly, I'm tired of waiting for potential, I rather have production. -
Although I take no stock in this, just for argument's sake, that is way too I Dropped The Soap! much to give up for a player we don't need. Agreed. If that deal is on the table, the Cubs better be getting a 2nd solid addition in the deal, like Jamie Walker. Otherwise, I wouldn't feel comfortable for the Cubs trading 4 players, for Brian Roberts who is a solid player, with All Star ability. If Brian Roberts was a true elite player, fine, but he's not. So a second player has to be added for the deal to be worth it. In theory.

Because the Indians are smart and the Cubs are stupid? We could buy 3 Salcedos for the money we gave Samardzija. Yeah....you can forget about Julio Jones. He's been a virtual lock to Alabama since the Alabama/Arkansas game. There's less then a 5% chances that Jones signs with any team not name Alabama come tomorrow. And it's even less for Robert Lester. FSU fans can forget Jones/Lester as FSU was never consider a "strong" possibility for either kid. And TJ Bryant, well the rumor around my neck of the words...if that TJ will be a surprise commit to Alabama. I don't buy the rumor, as I believe he'll end up at FSU. Which is might as well, seeing as Saban viewed both Alonzo Lawrence and Robby Green as higher priorities then Bryant. Not to burst your bubble, but Jones has visited FSU more than any other school. Lester has made several unofficial visits to FSU without anyone knowing (I have this confirmed through ex-players). All signs point to Lester going where Julio goes as a package deal. But we'll find out around noon. Well, fiddlesticks. Julio & Lester to Bama. I think FSU screwed the pooch on this one based on what I just heard. Evidently Julio was a silent to FSU as of his official visit. Lester would have come with him, but he wasn't ever shipped an official scholarship - both FSU and Lester weren't convinced that either had serious interest in the other. Due to this, Julio said I'll stay home. Doesn't hurt that his mom basically said you're staying here in Bama, either. Mom always knows best. You can't "Screwed the pooch" if you were never in it. Let's make it clear, Jones and Lester WAS NEVER a packaged deal. If they ended up at the same school---as they did at Alabama---fine, but never were considered a packaged deal. If they were, every team that was after Jones, would have been after Lester. OU and FSU was only after Lester, if it secured Jones signature. But let's not forget the fact that Lester is one heck of a S prospect for Alabama. He didn't need Jones to be recruited. IDK where you get the info that Jones was a silent to FSU, but it isn't true. Andrew Bone of Tidesports.com---who is reliable (think Bruce Miles for Alabama football) reported that while Jones had some interests for FSU, the feeling was, Jones rarely consider FSU a serious contender, and that they were a "back burner, backup plan" team. Yes, staying at home which is easier for your mom to see you play, did play a part in choosing Alabama. But so do Jones GF who enrolled at Alabama in January, I believe. Scott/Lester and Ray were constantly in his ear about playing together at Alabama. And the fact that he grew up a monster Alabama fan, also play alot in his decision. So you can see why, most Alabamians were not at all concerned about Jones signing with any other team not named Alabama. Now I was surprise that TJ Bryant ended up at USC. That was a shocker. I am going to refrain from making any substantial announcements, but I will say this...any Big Ten fan (or for those who are not SEC fans) that are tired of hearing about how great the SEC is, and blah, blah, blah, I can tell you, your not going to get a break in the next couple of yrs. The SEC just got stronger.

Why would anybody want to be James T. Kirk, the most overrated Captain in the Star Trek universe? Besides...I doubted Kirk would have lasted as long as he did, with "THE ALIEN LADIES" (<--impersonating Conan O'brien) because eventually he Kirk would have gotten some form of Alien STD, or somesort, and died young. I could imagine Kirk trying to "hook up" with the Borg Queen. Now Spock....HE'S THE MAN. The rightful Captain of the Original Enterprise. (And yes...the nerd in me, has thought about this before)

For anyone who's been geeky enough to watch Star Trek
RedFlash replied to Beer Kaese's topic in Chicago Cubs Talk
I agree. I thought Voyager---while having the most potential, and could have created new avenues for the Star Trek universe----was the worst show of the Star Trek. To me...they played it TOO SAFE for Voyager. -
Tigers extend Granderson
RedFlash replied to Post Count Padder's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
His 2007 line against lefties of .225/.269/.494 is downright awful. And there's one less lefty in that division this week (Santana). I think the Tigers will come out of this okay. I didn't say the Tigers didn't do alright with this signing, I just said, Granderson now needs to hit lefties at a better clip, to be worth the money he's getting. -

We just picked up a RB from the Big 10 country (Mark Ingram) and I would challenge anybody to name a better class then what Alabama has, and still could land. (I know people will throw out GA, Fla, blah, blah...but at worst..Alabama is right there with those two teams in recruiting no worse). Alabama still could land Julio Jones, Jerrell Harris (TOP LB prospect), TJ Bryant, Marcel Dareus (Top DT prospect) and his brother. Easily a top 3 class, might even be the Top class. So yeah, my team is kicking butt in recruiting this yr.

I like this the only thing that scares me is that means Dumpster will be the 5th starter!!!! so I dont know sherrill would make our pen even better but is worth making dempster a starter? I'm not that worried about Dempster starting , From all indications Lou says he'll get a look this spring training . He's no lock for the rotation. If the Cubs end dealing Marquis and Gallegher for Roberts , Dempster will still have his work cut out for him earning that fifth spot. Marshall and Hart could easily push Dempster from that role with a solid spring. I just don't see them sending us Sherill because his salary is so low, my bet is we end up with Payton/Millar/Bradford as part of the dump for them taking Marquis off are hands. If that is the case, I'd prefer Jamie Walker as the dump off instead of Mr. Cowboy Shut Up Kevin Millah, Mr. Supersta Jay Payton, or Bradford. This would allow the Cubs to move Scott Eyre (who's a FA at the end of the yr) .

Tigers extend Granderson
RedFlash replied to Post Count Padder's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
Now let's see Granderson become a COMPLETE player, and learn how to hit lefties at a decent clip. -
The Baltimore Sun writer was on the radio and said that if the Cubs don't up their offer for Roberts then he doesn't think he'll be traded. I don't see us putting both Gallagher and Marshall in the deal. Maybe Gallagher and Marquis. I see something like Gallagher, Colvin, Cedeno for Roberts and Payton. The Hendry should stand firm with his offer. The Cubs DON'T NEED Brian Roberts. They have a pretty solid 2B in Mark DeRosa. So Hendry shouldn't be held over the barrel for Brian Roberts. A speedy 2B is not a need for the Cubs, but a luxury, and if Baltimore is trying to screwed the Cubs in this deal, then the Cubs should back away. Brian Roberts isn't worth the trouble, to be honest.
