  1. Today was a blah loss, oh well. I suspect the Cubs will take the next two very comfortably. That's what I was thinking, if the Pirates were going to win, today (technically, yesterday here) was their best shot, they don't have much of chance vs Lilly and Zambrano. Maholm is no joke. He's never done much against the Cubs and he did toss 118 pitches last time, so maybe we can get to him. Friday's game to me said the Cubs took a "mental breather" after such an exciting week. That said, I expect the Cubs that we saw in Milwaukee return and just spank the Pirates.

  3. I have a quite confidence about this game. I fully expect a late big inning from the Cubs and we'll win this game something like 4-2, 5-2.
  4. Maybe, but I doubt their stance about what they want for Washuburn prolly won't change.
  5. But to be fair, the Red Sox are thinking "Nomar part 2" with this deal. They got rid of a franchise icon, Nomar, and replace him with serviceable players like Mientkiewicz (at the time) and Orlando Cabrera, and in a separate deals Dave Roberts and Mike Myers and they went with the "team" concept the rest of the way. Now I understand that Manny was on that team, but I remember Nomar becoming a distraction that yr, because A: He turned down a contract extension and B: He pulled himself out of an Red Sox/Yankee game in which we saw that DJ "overrated catch" into the stands. They got rid of a distraction and it proved dividends. They're hoping history repeats itself with Jason Bay. But I do think this trade will definately hurt the Sox chances of getting into the playoffs. You don't get rid of a talent like Manny and only settle for Jason Bay. I like Bay, and I am glad he is no longer in Pittsburgh, but I could see him struggle under the burden of replacing Manny in LF.
  6. And they lost against the Yankees on Jarrod Washburn. And Adrian Beltre with the Twins. But they did beat the Marlins in the Arthor Rhodes deal. Not a good trade deadline for the Mariners in general.
  7. Just for good measure, let's go 32-21 the rest of the way, and force MIL to go 37-16 and StL, 36-15. If we can go 30-23 (or better) the rest of the way, we can  bye-bye to these two and run away with the NL's best record. If the Cubs go on that roll, then chances are the Cubs should pass the Angels in record (I think they will fade abit in September, not much) and be crowned "Best team in baseball." Not that I want the crown of "Best team in baseball" before the end of October.
  8. Maybe Ed Wade thinks the Astros can go on a run and finish the season in 3rd place, just like "Mr. 3000."
  9. why? Just to mess with New England Patriots fans.... And yes, I would find that hilarious.
  10. Just DFA Eyre. He's in the last 2 months of his contract. So I think it is going to hurt the Cubs. If you can't get outs in a blowout, then you suck. You're Milwaukee Brewer bullpen bad. Orrrrrrrrrrr you're a guy who has done very well this year but hasn't been used since coming off the DL due to his bullpen-[expletive] manager and just might be more than a tad rusty. The fact that Lou is hesitant to use Eyre in game situation tells you alot. I ok with Marshall and Cotts as the lefties in the pen for the remainder of the season. No need to carry another pitcher if he isn't going to be used.
  11. The only thing more hilarious then Junior in CF, is Manny Ramirez and Alfonso Soriano playing RF at the same time..... :D

  13. I had my half-shirts long before we got Jimmy Terrific. A former Cardinal helping the Cubs beat the Brewers......Terrrrrrriffic...
  14. I'm going with Angels/Rays, because Rays are deeper, more talented, and better.
  15. I prefer DeJesus over Giles for several reasons: 1: He's younger by a decade. 2: He put's up similar numbers. 3: He's versatile. 4: He is under contract through 2011. Which means the Cubs could part with Felix Pie in the deal and still have a CF for the foreseeible future. It would cost more to acquire DeJesus, but the Cubs IMO, would get more from DeJesus then they would for Giles.
  16. Talk about robbery, they must be nuts. If they keep that stance, they can stuff it.. [-( This is the same organization that wants the Yankees to pick up all of Jarrod Washburn contract, plus give up a TOP prospect. So, it doesn't surprise me that the M's are asking for Pie and another good prospect for Ibanez.
  17. Personally, I think Lou wanted to get Shark into a road playoff atmosphere game as quickly as poosibility. He wasn't ready to trust him into a tight contest on the road in the first game, as the possibility of taking Game 1 prevented that. But with a good lead, and three outs, what better way to get Shark his first road appearance? There's nothing to Lou using Shark in meaning innings.
  18. Does anybody realize how bad the Angels offense is? http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/stats/aggregate?statType=batting&group=9 How is the "best team in baseball" so crappy offensively?
  19. I'm tired of propaganda. Under his last contract, the Bears and the us fans could be patient with Hester developing into a NFL WR. But given the new contract there is no patience. He must developed.
  20. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=3508272&name=mlb_trade_deadline i don't know why they choose joba as a comparison when jenks is probably a better comparison, considering like the angels in '02, the white sox won in '05 actually nevermind, i do know why they choose joba to compare, its espn. Buster Olney said on "Mike and Mike" this morning the reason for the Joba's comparasion, is simply because of the electricity that each pitcher (Shark/Joba) brought to their resepctive teams. In all fairness to Jenks he too brought a lot of electricity to the team with that 100mph heater. True, but I was going by what Buster was throwing out there. I think Shark/Joba is a pretty good comparasion. As a starter Shark doesn't have that upside as Joba, but as a reliever his upside could be very high. But I suspect that given his contract Shark will be given a chance to battle for a starting rotation spot next yr.
  21. are you just regurgitating things you heard Steve Phillips say? No, I am going with the fact that no team is going to give up the prospects needed for the Rockies to bypass collectig the picks when Fuentes leaves via FA. That and the fact that NL West is so crappy, the Rockies still are "theorticially" still in this race. So unless they get blow away with an offer, my belief is Fuentes won't be dealt. And KC is in no hurry to move Mahay. So, the irony of this deadline is....the best Loogy possibly available (after Marte being dealt, and Fuentes/Mahay are wishy-washy on availability) could be Will Ohman. I consider Sherrill a lefty set up/closer, along with Fuentes, whereas Mahay is a loogy with Ohman.
  22. It's definately comparable to the last time Sori came off the DL back in May. Back in May it took him about 17 at bats---or 3 full games---to get going again, and coming off the DL now, it took him about 18 atbats. So yeah, Sori coming off DL in July is very similar to him coming off DL in May.
  23. That's right, but it's also not like selling a privately held company. Similar fiduciary obligations/issues apply as in the sale of a public company. The fact that those harmed by acceptance of a lower bid are employees of the Tribune makes it all the less likely. I think a key issue, though, is that it's the Trib that has the fiduciary responsibility, not MLB. If the Trib accepts the highest bid but MLB doesn't approve it the Trib couldn't be held liable. They will have done their part. Sam Zell doesn't appear to be the type of guy that will would go down quietly. He bought the Tribune Co. to make money, and if Cuban is offering the most money, he is going to move heaven and earth to make sure that Cuban is approved. And I hope he succeeds (I'm all for Cuban). However, if they're hell-bent against it, Zell can't FORCE MLB to approve Cuban. Nor can MLB force Zell to sell to one of MLB's "approved" bidders. But I am pretty sure that there is enough owners (I believe 24 is the number of owners Cuban would need to get approvals from to become an owner of a MLB franchise) that is willing to break the "old boy network" for more money in their pockets.
  24. Wait...............there was a game tonight? Didn't get home till 1 in the morning (coming back from Orlando) and instead of waiting for the highlights, I decided to become INSANE to read all 68 pages of this thread. This thread is the reason why I love this board. This board can go from cautiously optisimistic, to pessmistic, to crazy mad to heavenly happy in a matters of moments. All I can say is this...........suck it ESPN and you overhyping theatrical performances of BoTox/Crankees hype. This game may have been the best game of the yr.
  25. With the Rockies back to 10 games under .500 and within 6 games of 1st, I'm going to say it now....Brian Fuentes will not be traded.
