    Guttierez plz LF - Lake CF - Sweeney/Guttierez RF - Schierholtz/Ruggiano ? Isn't Gutierrez a bad CF? I thought he was pretty highly regarded. The last two years he has graded out poorly, and prior to that he was really good. UZR/150 2009 - 29.0 (1353 inning sample) 2010 - 5.3 (1277.1 inning sample) 2011 - 28.8 (763 inning sample) 2012 - -31.7 (322.2 inning sample) 2013 - -23.9 (131.2 inning sample) Prior to 2009 he also graded out really well in very limited time. It's almost as if defensive metrics are imperfect and sometimes unreliable.

    The East is so bad that they couldn't even tank if they wanted to. They will probably end up as a 4 or 5 seed.

    why is it unnecessary? how should they have made it better?

    Obviously not enough. I'm not denying that it's a narrow road, but the way they gave up in 2012 and seem to be in 2014 without trying wasn't helpful to anything. That total probably looks a little closer if they don't break Starlin Castro. One Carlos Villanueva well-used could have made a big difference in 2012. They could have won 65 games!

    Without perfect hindsight I'm not sure they could have reasonably added enough good available players to get out of the terrible roster Hendry left behind.

    Derrick Rose has huge endorsement deals and he has all the charisma of plywood.

    Maybe Baez and Bryant are ready enough that the Cubs could start them in the majors and actually try to be good next season. Baez is riskier but I really think Bryant could OPS around .800. I'm probably over reacting.
