I think he's become very wary of free agency, partly because he was burned in Boston a few times and partly because fewer guys make it to FA while in their prime (as Jed said last night). So with that in mind, I think he's of the mindset that a total teardown is the only way to really set the Cubs up for the future. I trust these guys, even if the "ready to compete" phase seems like it's going to be a year or so later than most people thought. At the same time, I don't think Jed's hesitancy to put a date on competing means anything. Kind of a dumb question, really, since if he says 2014 that puts pressure on them to win 90 games in 2014. Better to be vague.
