  1. Ohio State and Wisconsin look like they got caught looking ahead to their west coast road trips Edit: Bobcats take the lead with their backup QB. 7-3
  2. When the hell did they make him a starter? I like it First career start. Going well I guess.
  3. Didn't expect to say this after the first half, but awesome game.
  4. Along these lines, as of today Zambrano has a higher offensive VORP than anyone on the A's roster (Z=18.0, Cust=17.8).
  5. The most impressive thing is the Cubs are more awesome than the Nationals are terrible. That's pretty hard to do.
  6. Iowa State exceeded my low expectations by beating SDSU 44-17. It doesn't sound like much, but you have to go back to 2005 to find a game where ISU won by more than 11 points. Kent State, who won in Ames by 9 last year, should be a better test next week.
  7. Iowa State kicks off in a little under 2 hours, so I get to experience the start of college football season two days before most of the country. Being an Iowa State fan that's probably the only thing I'll have to brag about this year. I'm predicting 4 wins this year, and that's probably a tad optimistic. Austen Arnaud is the starting QB, but might split time Phillip Bates, who was more well know for his receiving last year. Since the 2 QB system has worked approximately never in college football history, and that ISU doesn't really have any players of note this year, a bowl game is somewhat unlikely. They should win tonight against the mighty South Dakota State Jackrabbits, though ISU isn't a huge favorite and lost to I-AA competition last year.
  8. Player A: .348/.459/.617/.366 EqA/69.5 VORP in 495 PA's Player B: .293/.340/.561/.294 EqA/24.8 VORP in 350 PA's Player A leads in pretty much every counting stat if that matters. Can you explain how player B adds more value than player A?
  9. I'd have to imagine this is the least value the current HR leader has been traded for since Ruth (Dunn's not as valuable as your typical HR leader, but still). Unless the 2 PTBNL are top prospects, I find it hard to believe that the Reds couldn't get better value before the trade deadline.
  10. Nice article. Caple makes a lot of good points, especially about the Mariners misuse of Putz last season. It's amazing how the addition of a stat has changed the game so much. Here's another pretty good, semi-related Page 2 article on the K-Rod for MVP/Cy Young talk. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=krod/080805&sportCat=mlb I keep telling myself not to read the comments on ESPN, YouTube, etc, but I always find myself reading them anyway and wondering how stupid people can be.
  11. #428 with a 273 ESPN. On a steady rise since Vizquel (70 ESPN in less than 170 PA's, OPS of .399) returned from injury.
  12. Not much to add about Johnson, everyone else pretty much covered it. The foot injury last year hurt his ability to drive, which explains much of his efficiency drop. If he recovers fully he'll be a great addition. He can shoot the three, but he wouldn't be your best option. His defense wasn't spectacular, but it's not terrible either. His natural position is small forward, but he played mostly power forward his freshman year and shooting guard last year because of ISU's personal. He apparently played some point guard for an overseas traveling team last summer too. He needs to bulk up a little, but his leaping ability can make up for his lack of size. I'll post a full Iowa State basketball breakdown a little later. I want to make sure no one else leaves the team before the start of the season. Either way it doesn't look like a promising year.
  13. I thought if transfers stay academically eligible and graduate elsewhere it doesn't hurt the school. Or something like that. Am I wrong? The school still takes a ding under the APR for a transfer -- if a player transfers while ineligible, that's really bad for the school. Yeah, I think ISU lost 2 scholarships for McDermott's first year for having a terrible graduation rate under Morgan. Probably more to come since they graduated 2 scholarship players this year, 1 last year, and only have one guy from McDermott's 1st squad in 2006-2007 left on the roster now.
  14. Ugh. I didn't see that comming, and it doesn't sound like anyone else did either. Probably wasn't going to be a good year for ISU next year anyway, but losing the team's best returning player makes it much worse. "Massive turnover" might be an understatement at this point. Off the top of my head, since the end of the 2006 season ISU has lost: Will Blalock - pro early Curtis Stinson - pro early Shawn Taggart - transfer Tasheed Carr - transfer Ross Marsden - quit Mike Taylor - kicked off team Corey McIntosh - transfer? Dodie Dunson - transfer? Cory Johnson - transfer Marcus Brister - transfer? Clayton Vette - transfer Wesley Johnson - transfer 12 players (at least) lost in the 26 months since the Wayne Morgan scandal broke. About half of them would be starters on most teams in the country. I feel sorry for McDermott, but he's had a lot of his own recruits leave, so I can't say he's completely blameless.
  15. I was just offered Scott Olsen for Soto today. I guess he was hoping I would accidently click accept trade or something.
  16. Moving Hill's next start back wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. Whether or not it's the right move is very debatable, but I could live with it. Skipping his start entirely, like it appears they might do, is terrible. I don't know of any other instance of a team skipping their 2nd or 3rd best pitcher for matchup reasons.
  17. Iowa State
  18. Why do we need another Reed Johnson? All Crisp would do is take Pie's playing time, and if that's a priority Reed can do it. Getting him for free would be a bad idea, and giving up prospects is insane, but I guess the important thing would be that he can switch hit and play all 3 outfield positions. Gammonds better be wrong.
  19. Any lineup that goes: Reed Johnson Pitcher Mike Fontenot Ryan Theriot at any point is not going to be pretty, especially against a RHP.
  20. Part of the problem is that the Cubs haven't had any great prospects that would develop under any circumstances. It's debatable how much of that is bad luck and how much is bad scouting. The other problem is that young players who get called up to the majors get an extremely short leash. Just this year Pie has been a bench player after the 1st 4 games, and Murton was sent to AAA after a reasonably good 2007. This has been going on at least since Dusty became manager, but upper management is to blame as well. It's very hard to develop into a major league player when you don't get to face major league pitching.
  21. What the hell?!! Its blacked out in IN too!! F! F! F! Same in Iowa, I don't have CSN either. MLB really needs to fix these terrible blackout rules.
  22. Yeah, Theriot was out there. Even the umps are doing terrible today.
  23. I checked the score an hour ago on my cell phone between classes when it was 7-0, so I figured they had this one. Now I come back to this, ugh.
