  1. I don't want to have super high expectations for Soto, but he's obviously the better option over Hank.
  2. This backs up, at least some, the claims about Dunn not coming through when it counts.
  3. I've always thought Pie has a tremendously long swing. I don't think he is a big power guy, despite the early projections. I'd be thrilled if he could hit 12-15 HR a year with 35+ doubles. There is absolutely nothing wrong with him trying to cut his swing down a bit.

  5. Luke Scott is the Matt Murton of Houston.
  6. He's young, good, relatively cheap, and under control for the next 3 seasons. Why would Oakland want to trade him? I could understand it if he was a soon to be FA, but he's not Whoever doesn't get Santana can probably get Haren and be better off.
  7. Interesting... Of course you know he is going to go to Houston and play like a mad man. By July Hendry will be getting blasted for not ponying up the dough for him.
  8. I'd expect that UNC line to move a bit with all the money that is bound to be bet on them.
  9. Buster Olney reporting that "rival executives" say Prior is available for trade... http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3129805
  10. Sullivan says Cubs are working on a two year deal for Prior. But said they would trade or non-tender him if he does not agree. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-071126cubsbits,1,5133952.story?coll=cs-cubs-headlines
  11. Not sure if it has been mentioned yet, but I really like the potential for the back end of the bullpen. In whatever order, I fell pretty confident in Howry-Marmol-Wood combination.
  12. Yeah..Indiana was god awful tonight. Oh well. At home against Georgia Tech and at SIU next week.
  13. IU doing what I was afraid they would do, laying an egg against Xavier. Down 11 at halftime, 40-29. Curious how they will come out in the 2nd half.
  14. Only a 13 point win? That seems like a pretty close game for them considering they were playing ISU. Yeah, they weren't at their best tonight. Armon Bassett left early in the first half and didn't return, looked like an ankle. If they don't play better tomorrow night Xavier will beat them.
  15. Another ho-hum performance by Eric Gordon, 31 points. IU beats Illinois St 70-57. Will face Xavier tomorrow night.
  16. Will Cordero help the bullpen, sure. He's better than the crap the Reds have had out thre over the last few years. But he probably won't be worth that money in a few years either. Again, this is the first time the Reds have landed a high priced guy like this in a long time. I understand the Reds fan's excitement here. Something is sometimes better than nothing, and nothing is what they have been used to lately. (is my theory correct here reds44? Just the impression I get living in an area populated with many Reds fans).
  17. If the Cubs had signed him for that deal, this board would have melted down with the people who hated the deal. Many people on this board don't like committing a decent percentage of the payroll to the bullpen to the first place. They also don't like multi-year deals for relievers. They also don't like signing guys in their 30's to long-term contracts. Finally, many think the position of closer is overrated to begin with. Cordero fits under all of the above, and while he'll likely be pretty productive he's not productive enough to be that big of a percentage of the Reds overall payroll. What? You are talking about a team that was 29th in baseball in blown saves last year. A blown save can occur pretty much anytime a starter leaves the ballgame. Most are not necessarilly even the fault of the "closer." Ya think? The Reds issue really wasn't closer last year. Weathers was 33/38 in saves. However, this allows the Reds to move Burton to the 7th, Weathers to the 8th, and Cordero to the 9th. It lines up the middle innings nicely. That's the point. No offense, but what makes you so confident about Stormy Weathers in the 8th inning?

  19. Part of me can see why Reds fans are excited, this is the first time in a long, long time that they have paid big money for a so called "premier" FA. Cordero will help them, but will he be worth the contract? So, bad contract or not, the Reds fans are excited to see themselves as players in the market. Although I think the money could be better spent elsewhere. Cordero was absolutely awful outside of Miller Park last year, which is probably a fluke because its not like Miller Park is a pitcher's paradise. I go to several Cincy games a year, despite the crap I get for my Cubs allegiences. I am constantly harassed by suppoerting a "loser", yet you have to look very hard to see a team that has competed less than the Reds have the past 7 or 8 years.
  20. That might get the conversation started, but the other teams involved in that Cabrera sweepstakes could easily top that.
  21. There has been a lot of discussion about players like Fukudome, Bradley, Church, and Hamilton. All of these players could play RF and fill in at CF if needed. Also, a player like Fukudome could play CF against a tough lefty with Murton in RF and then go back to RF when facing a right-handed pitcher and let Pie play CF. Hamilton and Bradley I think would both fall into the slight risk category, both injuries and other reasons. Church would be interesting, he's been a favorite around here for a while. I'm not completely sold on him but he's better than anything else the Cubs have right now.
  22. Brian Randle hurt....The University of Illinois' version of Mark Prior.
  23. They need someone else out there, which is why I don't think the Jones trade was an especially smart move. I hope Pie turns out to be the guy, but I can't say I am all that confident. The jump from AAA to the Majors is a big one. I hope he can make the necessary adjustments. His Domincan numbers are ugly at this point. But, they need someone else that can do the job in case Pie is not the guy. I'm not talking Pagan or Infante either. Hopefully whoever the Cubs pickup for the OF can play CF if need be. Bottom line, it would be great if Pie can do it. But there has to be someone else in place in case he can't.
  24. Which is why I don't get the folks who get all upset when there is speculation about the Cubs adding a CF. I sincerely hope Pie turns out to be the guy, but if you don't bring in anyone else capable of filling that job you are just setting yourself up for failure.
