What does "all in" mean? I don't think what is being discussed here comes close to people expecting all in. Nobody is talking about all in. What they are talking about is the stupidity with remaining cautious and hoarding all prospects. This nonsense that it's just not time to try yet and we are too far behind to risk losing even one prospect for a chance at a playoff game. in fact, now is as good as time as any to go "all in." you have a healthy and dominant lester and arrieta, something you're not guaranteed over the next 5 seasons or whatever.
for fucks sake, people don't want to trade billy flippin mckinney for ross or carrasco? please just post in the minor league forums and stay out of here please.
if the cubs didn't want to give him 4 years before 2015, why would they want to pay him through those 4 years (while only benefiting from the last 2 months of the first/in theory best year) now? and give up stuff to get him?
i will say, the current regime has done a pretty good job of convincing a large percentage of the fanbase that a) the team is broke and b) the only way to be successful is to intentionally suck for five years.
yeah the advantage the Cubs have in getting hamels is that that have better pieces to offer in a trade. they have no advantage over other teams that are just gonna offer price a pile of money.
can't wait for the new sophisticated baseball mind thing to be "well yeah, schwarber is hitting .350 with 35 hr, but his defensive footwork has cost the cubs 42,000 runs. but the casual fan might not notice stuff like that."
