  1. Did that cause his atrocious 2005, too, Jim? the excuse factory has got to be in high gear w/ jones and pierre right now. but hey, let's attribute the struggles to internal blaming and cold weather instead of just looking at their 2005 numbers and admitting that these guys just aren't that good.
  2. i just remembered the cubs stole, what, five bases last night too. wow, five stolen bases and four sac bunt attempts = one run (scored, of course, on a solo homer). not exactly a ringing endorsement for small ball, eh?
  3. i don't know if that's the case. his 2006 numbers aren't that far off his 2005 numbers. factor in that he's coming to a new league and has the security of a three year deal, and his 2006 numbers really aren't that surprising.
  4. unfortunately, many (including cubs management, i'm guessing) think that the entire offensive problem is because of lee's injury. therefore, they will fail to see the numerous other offensive shortcomings. the lee injury coincided with the end of the cubs' ridiculous good luck driving in RISP, which is more to blame for the dropoff in runs. the cubs would be struggling to score runs even w/ lee in the lineup right now.
  5. As if the ball isn't bouncing 15 times with the guys we have now? seriously. jones has rolled four or five throws into the infield. must have caught something from pierre. nomar in rf (if he could handle it physically) would be better than jones, regardless of whether he's an injury risk. if he gets hurt, then you throw pie, mabry, hairston, or even patterson out there and you'll likely match jones' "production." even if you only get two months of nomar, two months of nomar + mabry/pie/whoever > an entire season of jones...especially when you consider the albatross of a contract they gave jacque.
  6. corey: .277/.299/.446/.745 ouch.
  7. That's Hendry and the Trib. They're willing to overpay for mid-level players, but they're unwilling to get in bidding wars for top-tier free agents. Hendry should GM a mid-market team, not this one. He just has no clue. that would be an even worse disaster than this. he would single handedly cripple a 40 mil payroll team with a signing like jones. you think it's bad that he takes up 1/20th of this payroll? imagine the damage he would do if he make up 1/8th or 1/6th of a team's payroll.
  8. most specifically, the 3rd, 17th, 33rd, 34th, 38th-44th, 51st, 54th, and 64th-73rd. though the 21st one kinda made me mad. i have to admit, however, i rather liked the 49th.
  9. LEGITIMATE! i should do a search and see how many times that word was used on this board to describe pierre's lead off skills in the last three months.
  10. honestly, seeing that [expletive] try to sac bunt three innings in a row and have it produce exactly zero runs almost gives me as much joy as it does pain. if the bus back to the hotel ran into a billboard that said 'sac bunts are stupid,' the omen wouldn't be any clearer than it was tonight. high comedy.
  11. 11 more sac bunts and the cubs would have won.
  12. ...before you decide it's a bad idea? i don't think i've ever, in my life, seen a team attempt to sac bunt a leadoff baserunner over THREE innings IN A ROW and have it fail EACH AND EVERY TIME. the evidence could not be made any plainer. it's as though the baseball gods were trying to make it as obvious as possible. THREE INNINGS IN A ROW!!!!
  13. i've missed the last half of the game. do my eyes deceive me or have the cubs been 0-3 the last three innings w/ the 'get the leadoff guy on and then bunt him over strategy'? i mean, seriously, how many times does it have to NOT work before you quit trying it?????? unreal!!!!!!!
  14. getting cocky now that they've got a run...starting to think that they can just waste runners.
  15. which has surprisingly led to no runs.
  16. so you're saying they just need to get into 1st place in singles and they'll be fine, right? hurry and trade for someone else that can beat out infield hits!
  17. wow, almost identical lines for cain and santana...weird. 4 INN, 9 HA, 3 BBI, 4 K, 6 ER, L 4 INN, 9 HA, 4 BBI, 4 K, 6 ER, L
  18. wow...if their bats are slow...
  19. instead i decided to watch the cubs dribble the ball around the infield for a couple hours. i think i made the right choice.
  20. nope. they killed the cubs. SPEED NEVER SLUMPS!!!!!
  21. yea you did - liar! edit. :D
  22. actually lee's injury is a blessing to hendry fans. they can use his injury as the excuse for why the cubs' offense is so bad, even though the offense sucked w/ lee. it distracts from the pierre and jones deals.
  23. i didn't realize small ball meant a small amount of runs being scored. oh wait, yeah i did.
  24. i can hear the end of the year excuses already...'oh, derrek lee was hurt. he was the difference between having the worst offense in the league and a great offense.'
