  1. Personally, I'd be furious that the Cubs left a starter in all year long that couldn't provide better numbers than that. I don't care if they have to promote Veal or Gallagher to make it happen. 5.40 ERA/1.60 WHIP is for AAA, not the major leagues. I'd be livid that the pitcher with the 5.40 ERA/1.60 WHIP wasn't DFA'd. Those are pathetic numbers regardless of the run support and "keeping his team in games" nonsense that would be spewed. if the cubs would have had a decent pitcher making those starts, he would have won 30 games with that ridiculous offense. so, yeah, i'd care.

my goodness, jorge julio is atrocious. make owens the closer already.
  4. yeah, he was brilliant today. shades of warren spahn.
  5. I agree that relievers are highly unpredictable, but simply saying this with conviction doesn't make it true. far from it, and alot of times when you try, it turns into complete disaster. i agree that relievers are unpredictable. so why spend millions upon millions for a bullpen that may be good when you can spend substantially less for a bullpen that may be good?
  6. Wuertz is a good pitcher, and your point would hold water if the Cubs had an unlimited supply of him. But Wuertz is on the Cubs right now. They wouldn't be replacing Howry by Wuertz, they'd be replacing him by Novoa or Marmol, and there is a big difference between those guys and Howry. my point is that you can always find someone to do league average bullpen work for cheap. there's no need to invest $12 million on a guy to do slightly above league average bullpen work. they may not be as good as wuertz, but someone can get the job done. and you would be replacing howry with wuertz...at least their roles. wuertz would become the primary rh set up guy. you'd then be replacing wuertz (whose role is less important) with guzman.
  7. But he was and its still Howrys job as our supposed best reliever to get him out. Hell anything but give up a home run to Adam Freakin Everett. Howry and Eyre have been horrible so far this year. Money well spent there. 7 games.... Give it a little more than a week into they year before we evaluate if it was money well spent. The real comedy is in the game threads, after each win or loss they are either losing 100 games, or headed to the playoffs. I dont care if its 7 games into the season. The point of the matter is that its absolutely ignorant to spend big money on relievers. They are not worth it considering you have just as good of a chance using somebody from your own system. yeah we used a lot of guys from our own system last year, and they were God-awful. Howry is a good relief pitcher, even though half this board seems ready to bury him after two poor outings this year. howry is a good pitcher...but is the difference between his low-mid 3 era and wuertz's mid-high 3 era worth $3.5 million? and that pitch to everett was in no way a strike.
  8. but they said it was a strength!
  9. the cubs seem to operate under the theory that if they give a couple middle relievers big contracts and spend all offseason talking about how the pen is a "strength" and one of the best in the league, then it automatically becomes true. the fact of the matter is, the difference between say guzman, wuertz, ohman and dempster, eyre, howry is more financial than production-based. eyre and howry are decent enough relievers, but paying them $4 mil/year when you can get the same/slightly worse production from guys like wuertz just doesn't make sense. relievers are too fickle to be spending that type of money on.

Teams want to have home games - how would you propose they keep all the cold weather teams on the road for all of April? well, you obviously couldn't do it all of april, but you could do it do it to some extent for the first week or two.

instead you have to settle for getting your ass kicked by the two-time defending champs and starting 0-2. dem's the breaks.
  14. too bad he's pitching 2-3 innings every five days instead of seven.

damn...a few poor decisions cost me this week. drew and teix laid eggs tonight and aj didn't do [expletive] all week. if papi hadn't gone off, i'd have won...

teixeira k's, but it was worth it to hear morgan bitching about the shift they have on him and how it tells the hitter there's no way they're going to throw him a fastball away. literally one second later, they zoom in on varitek calling for a fastball away that strikes him out.

We'll see. Logically, I benched Hill and Zito gets my 7th start of the week. He could clinch the week or allow your team a chance. i made some poor choices this week. going with cordero over wickman cost me 20 points, and going with sheets and myers over smoltz cost me too. looks like i'm gonna need HUGE games from teix, drew, and papelbon tonight. oh, and arod killed me this week...big time. I think you'll take it. Zito imploded and probably had 20 bases against him. We're 18 points apart right now and I've got Ortiz left for the week. yeah, zito really helped me out. drew, teix and papelbon v. ortiz tonight will settle it.

my 15 game winning streak is in serious jeopardy. i had to bench one of my three starters today, so benched smoltz (who pitched very well) and left sheets and myers out there (who both sucked).

yeah, there's a good chance i'm going to lose after that.
  22. on the radio bailey said pie had some tightness or something in his upper leg. he said he'd be fine.
  23. You were by far the biggest Hill supporter when everyone was hating on him last year. Do you ever get tired of patting yourself on the back for being right? of course not.
