I thought the prevailing sentiment was to stay far away from Zito, though he certainly had supporters. Given the differences in opinions by the people here, nothing Hendry does will go un-blasted. when you have a payroll nearing $100 mil and you struggle to reach .500, the gm is going to get blasted...deservedly. i have a hard time feeling sorry for hendry given how the team has performed since 2004.

the problem is, there's no rhyme or reason as to when the guys get added. hell, a bunch of those guys haven't even signed yet, have they? to me, it's just stupid to have those guys in the database. stupid. and there are guys that have signed that aren't in there. doesn't make any sense.

wait...so you're telling me that a squatting guy holding a stationary mitt doesn't have much of an effect on how a guy throwing a ball 60 feet away performs? now i've heard it all.

you didn't really think that. come on. also, i'd like to declare left field a defensive position. and third base is an offensive position. second base is half and half. right field is like 2/5 offense, 2/5 defense, 1/5 semi-sweet chocolate chips. centerfield is almost entirely moxie.

says who? and it was pretty good before barrett's departure. and the last couple seasons when barrett was catching. well, that settles it then. also, izturis batted second today, so i guess we better leave him there all season.

and zero hits. seriously, the catching is a problem. i can't believe people are like "oh well, we're winning, so it's ok." it's gonna catch up to them. They don't have zero hits but ok. really? i'm gonna have to fire someone on my research staff...

depends on your assessment of Marmol. I've thought for at least a year now that Marmol's repertoire was better suited for the bullpen, so I'd have put him there coming into this year. The alternates for the rotation would've been (for me) Guzman and Gallagher. couldn't have said it better myself. marmol's performance this season has made a strong statement that his career will be in the bullpen, and it looks as if it will be a pretty successful one at that. marmol's performance has made a strong statement that a young guy will need some time to adjust to the majors. he's not a one-pitch guy or someone who doesn't have any stamina...he could be an effective starter.

thanks for putting in cubspeak but, at the same time, all that other stuff is rather flukish. if derosa continues to outperform durham for the entire season, then i think you have to give some credit to hendry for preferring derosa to durham. i dont think so. because if durham plays like he normally does the rest of the year and derosa plays like his career avg the rest of the year, derosa will barely outperform him. Durham is having the worst year of his career and has the lowest obp since his rookie season. We can all agree that DeRosa has exceeded expectations this year. DeRosa's numbers are the expected numbers for Durham. If Durham crashes and burns next year again, then Ill say good job hendry. This really isnt that big of a difference. DeRosa wasnt too expensive like Soriano. It just probably wasnt the best move. i think the durham versus derosa decision is a closer one than you're making it out to be. for one, durham is three years older than derosa. also, while it's true derosa was coming off a career year, it was his first season of full-time play, and i suppose it's possible that something clicked for him...and it's not like the extra ab's exposed him or anything. i mean, i would have preferred durham too, but it's not like hendry opted for a 39 year old derosa over a 26 year old chase utley or some other indefensible decision.

i think i see what meph is saying w/ the durham/derosa stuff. just because baker bats macias leadoff and he gets three hits, it doesn't mean it was the right decision. or just because he brings remlinger in to face a lefty and he gets him out, that doesn't mean it was the right move. if the cubs trade aramis ramirez for a lefty reliever and ramirez breaks both his arms the next day and is never able to play again, that doesn't mean it was the right decision. i don't know if you can apply that logic to durham/derosa, though.
