  1. Last time the Cubs met Narveson, they were all healthy yet seemed to foprget that he was a middling 5 starter/swingman at best. Hopefully it doesnt slip their mind again tonight. It wouldnt hurt if Z has a better outing than last too, or at least Quade doesnt leave him in well after hes done.
  2. We have a legit shot to take this series. If we have Garza going against Greinke, we have a fighting chance to sweep. If we have whatever garbage 5th starter, forget about it.
  3. Although Vitters, Castro, and Fielder making up 3/4 of our infield could make for some rough defense.
  4. I really think that the only reasoning is that the other options have sucked. Wood, Marshall, Marmol is a great back end. Sharks been pretty good. Grabow hasnt been awful at times and Russell is an OK spare. Everyone else weve tried has been bad or awful. Gooz might be back in the next month, at which point, we'll see what happens, although Id prefer keep Carpenter after that and try to trade Grabow. We only need 2 lefties in the pen.
  5. Cant be worse than having your perfect game broken up by some guy whose name I cant even think of and probably isnt even in the majors anymore and he should have been out and now your not even in the majors anymore.
  6. I didnt realize quite how bad hed fallen off, but hes younger than most of our AAA starters, and I cant imagine him being any worse than the revolving door of bad we have at the 5th spot in the rotation. Im actually pretty surprised that they arent trying to trade him considering the guys that pitching desperate teams have been looking at and trying out (IE Doug Davis, Rodrigo Lopez, Ramon Ortiz, Carlos Silva) Im sure that there are plenty of teams thinking the same, most notably the Yankees, but a move to the NL could be more beneficial to him. If the Angels flat out dumo him, this could be the definition of a low risk/high reward investment.
  7. Actually, it's very feasible given the FA available after this season and 2012. There's nothing wrong with a big money team like the Cubs "throwing cash" at FA. The key is usually throwing it at the right FA instead of usually overpaying for middling talent. I was more addressing my impression that some people think that's what should have been done day one of the Ricketts regime and angst over unrealistic expectations over where people think we should be right now. Coming in and just throwing money at the problem in 2009 would have been neither prudent or particularly effective. Ah, gotcha. I agree. I don't think anybody's suggesting a 06-07 overhaul, but I would definitely like one of Pujols or Fielder, possibly see if we can buy low and get lucky with someone like Ben Sheets or Scott Kazmir for cheap and maybe trade for Mark Reynolds. If we can get lucky enough to move Soriano, great. I don't see it happening though, but he's still likely to OPS in the. .800s and hit 20-25 HR so if were going to pay him 20mil to do it, it should be for us. What I am strongly against, however is throwing any money at reserve outfielders, utility infielders, and backup catchers as we have more than enough of that on the farm.
  8. Definitely. Go with something like a Baker/DeWitt platoon at 3B as a placeholder next season. I think Flaherty would be a good option next season at third base. That's what I was thinking. I'm kind of in favor of going young period. I think Flaherty ends up a super sub. Id love to build a younger team around Prince Fieldee, Soro, and Castro, whose the youngest of all but already seems like a veteran that will only get better, and of course, Soriano out of necessity I wouldn't be opposed to trading for Mark Reynolds in the offseason depending on the price and if we can trade Byrd, great, if not he's still a solid player. Sprinkle in the likes of Flaherty, LaMahieu, Jackson, and Vittersnwhen hes ready and keep pumping though guys like Sxzur, Ha, and whoever else in A and the rookie leagues pan out. No reason to mess with the pitching just yet as Z, Garz, Demp, Cash, and Wells should be the 2012 opening day rotation, but as their contracts expire, we have McNutt and hopefully Struck, Whitenack, Beeler and others. We should have a bright future.
  9. Unfortunately, LaMahieu will continue to rot at the end of the bench and theyll go with the Baker/DeWitt platoon, which is probably th best offensive option to begin with but nobody benefits from LaMahieu in the role he's in now. Scales should be in it instead with DJ in Iowa.
  10. Hopefully this means that LaMahieu gets more playing time and some starts, although more likely it will be the Baker/ DeWitt platoon. Don't get me wrong, offensively, the B/D platoon is the better option but LaMahieu should either be getting sufficient PT or in Iowa or Tennessee playing everyday and call up Scales or someone of he like.
  11. And just when he had cracked the .100 mark too! Its where he belongs if he has any hope in he'll of a future. If what were looking for is a 5th outfielder and a pair of legs, Campanas the guy for the job, although I personally like Montanez if for nothing else the background story.
  12. Only 10 games out, we can do this. Time to trade some prospects for relievers and bench bats.
  13. And thats Rosscups final line. Not bad. Not bad at all.
  14. Either that or just listen to yourself bitch about a 5 starter being a 5 starter.
  15. Randy Wells is what he is. A decent, possiblly above average 5 starter. Put him against a strong lineup, and borderline ace, chances are it will lead to the Cubs advancing in the Fecal League.
  16. Rosscup pretty badass through 5. 9K 1BB 3H 0R And in Peoria, is Richard Jones anyone worth watching? going into tonights game, hes .298/.340/.530 and hit his 11th HR.
  17. The thread should be titled Chris Carpenter to Cubs.
  18. I can't hear the name Farnsworth and not think of the HR that he gave up to Dunn several years ago at Wrigley. The ball flew directly over my head (I was standing against the fence in right) landed on the sidewalk across Sheffield and hit a building on one bounce. Huge homer and has to come close to the rooftop shot from cromagnon man a few years prior. I think back more to him tackling some guy who charged the mound. forget who. I think it was a Red.
  19. Does Reagins get credit if he keeps doing well?
  20. Dare I say Farnsworth Jr.?
  21. But does Hendry have Ricketts vote of confidence?
  22. We probably wont win this game but we might. We probably wont though.
  23. Weve already burned through Berg, Mateo, and Stevens. I guess Caridad could get another chance, but hes not doing so hot himself. Blake Parket could be another options. No thanks Thomas Diamond, no thanks Ramon Ortiz. Im happy with the move. So once Carpenter does get promoted, whats the over/under on when in his 1st game up Len and Bob have some sort of convo about the 2 Chris Carpenters?
  24. ::wrigley23:Soriano ::jeffh:Hendry (more than your average person.)
