  1. Hooray, a sane person in this thread. But nobody can deny that Castillo should be getting substantial playing time if he's going to be here. Yes, everyone can and should "deny" it if he's only up here to cover a DL stint. Soto's likely not long for this team (in the big picture sense) and Castillo will get plenty of starts once he's gone. He's not "wasting away" playing as a backup while Clevenger is injured. I simply don't agree. Soto should be given as much time to get out of his funk as needed as long as he's on the team. Castillo should be starting regularly wherever he is. I just don't agree with either using Castillo as a backup or an even platoon. I think there's an open 40 man spot, so just roster Lalli and when we want the spot back take him off and if someone claims him, more power to them.
  2. I really can't think of a contender who could use Garza more so than the Tigers. Aside from Verlander their pitching has been atrocious, and unless they're frame of mind is that the rest of the division is bad enough that they don't need to upgrade Garza would be a great fit. Still, I'd rather extend him but the Tigers are clearly all in for the next few years and if they want to revisit the Turner, Smyly/Crosby, Castallanos talk that may or may not have ever happened it would be hard to say no.
  3. sergio mitre turned in a random gem against halladay too, going even further back. in his 6 starts vs. The Cubs, he's 1-5 3.75 ERA 1.22 WHIP 4 BB 28 K. Obviously better than most teams against him, but it's not like we're destroying him, must be at least partially luck, especially considering that 3 of those starts have been vs. Mitre, Marquis, and now Maholm.
  4. You're basing that statement on that small of a sample? Matt Stairs played MLB level for a long time But Chris Shelton didn't. I was actually wondering if there's a chance that he could end up landing somewhere between Babe Ruth and Jake Fox or if it has to be one extreme or the other.
  5. Hooray, a sane person in this thread. But nobody can deny that Castillo should be getting substantial playing time if he's going to be here. Soto needs playing time to if nothing else try and build his trade value, but Castillo shouldn't be wasting away on the bench, especailly if he is to be our starting catcher by the end of this year. It could be argued that Castillo probably wasn't the best guy to call up if he's to be used as a standard backup catcher. I suppose Blake Lalli probably would have been the better option if they wanted a guy to play once a week.
  6. Didn't expect that. Hopefully Castillo gets a decent amount of playing time.
  7. The 2012 Phillies are in grave danger of becoming the 2009 Cubs. Not awful, but a very disappointing follow up to the prior season. Sadly, after the 2009 Cubs come the 2010 and 2011.
  8. I'd say that we only really need 3-4 pieces, but they're big pieces. Assuming we extend Garza, I'd like to see 1 more front end starter and 1 mid rotation starter. at least 1 bat for the heart of the lineup. 2 would be nice. Likely 1. Starlin Castro, SS or 3B 2. Darwin Barney, 2B or utility 3. Wellington Castillo, C 4. Steve Clevenger Backup C 5. Rafael Dolis Pen (back end?) 6. Jeff Beliveau Pen (back end?) 7. Anthony Rizzo 1B 8. Brett Jackson CF or 4th OF 9. Travis Wood back end rotation 10. James Russell hopefully we hang on to 11. Matt Garza 1-2 starter 12. Jeff Samardzjia mid rotation Additional pieces 13. Bryan LaHair LF/bench 14. Dave Sappelt 4th/5th OF 15. Trey McNutt mid/back rotation or back end pen and maybe 16. Josh Vitters 3B/OF 17. Junior Lake SS/3B/bench 18. Adrian Cardenas 2B/3B/bench as well as various possibilitites for the pen 19. Bowden 20. Batista
  9. Wow, their lineup rivals ours as for as badness goes. Of course their rotation is a bit better.
  10. this is nice in theory, but never works. ever. Because it was tried once? Most teams without a closer will try it until one guy emerges as the top option. The Cardinals tried it for a while last season. Turned out OK for them.
  11. Or perhaps it's time to accept that Bryan LaHair is the 3rd greatest hitter in baseball history.
  12. It was all a mistake really. You see when guys in yamulkes ask for money, they're referred to as creditors, not panhandlers.
  13. Call it a stream of consciousness or simply an opinion likely to be unpopular, but I've been wondering it the time does come to call up a new 3rd baseman be it this season ir next, could Adrian Cardenas beat Josh Vitters to the punch? Cardenas is just 2 years older than Vitters, and both have reputations as spotty at best defensive players. Cardenas' career minor league line of .304/.368/.417/.785 is certainly better than Vitters .277/.318/.433/.752, and though he doesn't have the power, and maybe never will he cou;d very well end up a poor mans Starlin Castro or a wealthier mans Darwin Barney at the plate. Cardenas is in his 2nd full AAA season, but last year he posted a respectable .314/.374/.418/.791, making me wonder what caused the offensively famished A's to give up on him when they did, especially considering that between 2B, 3B, and SS they have the struggling Jamille Weeks and a handful of no names with sub .200 BAs and OPS hoveering around .500. I'm not saying give up on Vitters, and this isn't some irrational love letter to Cardenas but if nothing else have him replace Blake DeWitt.
  14. So...you know nothing and are just spitballing streams of concsiousness again? I do know that he was projected to be a 3rd or 4th round pick by pro football weekley.
  15. Never heard of McKellin but sounds like he's Football for Hayden Simpson. Oh good.
  16. Michael Jensen ( 5 IP 5 ER 3 BB 4 K)and Nick Struck( 4IP 6 ER 1 BB 1K, still in) were not good today. Austin Kirk (6 IP 1 ER 2 BB 6 K)was. Szczur has a triple and Torreyes 2 singles have bumped his BA to .276.
  17. Give me Prior, Wood, Cruz, Z, and Guzman.
  18. Speaking of Pawelek, he's only 25 and last pitched in 2010. I wonder what the record is for shortest amount of time taken for baseball to was it's hands of a 1st round pick.
  19. Friday: Maholm V Halladay: Phillies win 4-1 Saturday: Wells vs. Blanton: Phillies win 9-4 Sunday: Garza v. Kendrick: Cubs win 6-2
  20. I wonder when is too early or too late to try and conert him to the pen as an attempt to savage something out of him. I'd rather he end up a decent mildle reliever than a poor 6th starter if possible.
  21. Once Rizzo is ready, wouldn't the best bang for our buck be to platoon Soriano and LaHair in left? Traditionally, you don't want your 18 MM guy getting the short end of a platoon, but it's better than paying him 18 MM to play for the Orioles or Mariners while we get junk or nothing. We can say this until we're blue in the face, but until he's blocking someone or a better option becomes avaialble there's no benefit to running him out of town without a substantial return. Soriano has always hit lefties well. The past 2 years he averaged .283/.344/.534 against them. LaHair is terrorizing rigthies to the tune of .394/.488/.758, and while it's not realistic to expect that, his career against rigthies is .304/.372./490 which is quite reasonable to expect. In theory, that would give us a .293/.358/.512 bat for the heart of the lineup, although I'm well aware that it would not necessarily turn out that way. The question is would the offense of the pair be enough to offset the defense?
  22. When he tests positive for every PED on the market and turns out to be a 47 year old Venezuelan warlord wanted on multiple counts of genocide, torture, and piracy.
  23. For too long did he feast on LaRussas pixie dust, when in reality he posessed a similar slillset to Micah Hoffpauir. Now that the ingrate dared bite the hand that fed him, the baseball Gods are angered. Had he come up with any other organization he'd have been in Japan by 2004 and a cardboard box by 2007.
