  1. Very unrelated. I'm still not certain why they did the Byrd trade at his lowest possible value unless the PTBNL pool is something somewhat impressive. There may also have been some kind of internal issue, and umlike with the previous regime they managed to keep it quiet rather than help the media fan the flames. Soto also has a few years of team control.
  2. What type of compensation do they send your current employer if you take the job?
  3. Sergio Santos is the latest closer ticketed for the DL. Not a good year for closers, and come July teams could really come calling for Marmol.
  4. Don't worry, that's Nuts & Gum. It's his way of welcoming you. He's a big teddy bear. no he's not. I think Theo is ready to pull the plug on the Soto era also. But it probably won't be as quick as the Byrd trade. They have to play him and let him get out of his slump before they trade him though. So expect to maybe see him traded at the end of the trade deadline, or in the offseason. Soto is still young and under team control for a few years. The Rays would really be the ideal fit. They have the obvious need and while their farm system isn't what it once was, they're still deep. I highly doubt that they're willing to give up on Desmond Jennings just yet, especially with Upton likely out after this season. Too bad.
  5. David Cone had 2? Armando Gallaraga did too, although the record may not reflect it. Whether it's Sandy Koufax or Dallas Braden, nobody can discount the fact that it's a hell of an achievement. I hate to say it, but if the Sox rotation of Peavy, Danks, Floyd, Sale and Humber could be one of the better ones in the league. Aside from Konerko, their offense pretty much sucks though. Adam Dunn seems to be looking like the Adam Dunn of old but Pierzynski certainly isn't likely to keep up the >1.100 OPS. They also have a solid pen. If I were the White Sox, I might try all in again. Their long term future is bleak enough at this point that they may as well try an sell off whatever they have left in their farm system to fill some of the offensive holes and go for it the next year or 2. The thing about this season is that there really doesn't seem to be any one team that's head and shoulders above everyone else.
  6. Pretty much. Marlon Byrd was a jack of all trades and a master of none. He did everything well but nothing great. After a few years of high profile free agents like Soriano, Fukudome, and Bradley in came Marlon Byrd to minimal fan fair, and he quietly did his job for a few years.
  7. Tack on another 5 ER for Corpas and make it a 9 run inning.
  8. Ugh, Beliveau tagged for 3 ER in 1 inning to tie the game and Corpas gave up the go ahead. How many leads have the I Cubs given up the past week?
  9. Of all of the pitchers on earth, why did it have to be Phil [expletive] Humber.
  10. 3 on the 40 man rosters: Junior Lake, Deunte Heath and Donnie Veal Lake is Dominican He has an initial appearance black As far as African Americans go, looks like Sappelt's the only one on the 40 man.
  11. True. Again, I'm pretty satisfied with the return. I wasn't too happy with it this morning when we were rumored to get the journeyman loogy and it's certainly better than Lannan. It's already looking better than the Fukudome return.
  12. rob was saying he wished we'd held onto him until closer to the deadline; you seem dissatisfied with the trade for reasons that aren't completely clear. I have no problem with the trade; I'm just baffled by people who rag on a player like Byrd on the way out the door, doing things like calling him "a bum." Nobody can pretend like he's been anything other than awful this season, but I don't understand the meatballish tendency to trash a player like that. What did I do now? My sentiment is if they were pushing him out the door for Jackson, that would be one thing but they're not. It's Tony Campana. I'm actually happier with Bowden than with the loogy, but we really shouldn't be picking up the rest of Byrds salary, but I guess it all depends on what the PTBNL is. I'm not expecting anything huge, but even if we end up with another Abner Abreu would be satisfactory at this point.
  13. That was a great AB by LaHair. Nice job laying off some tempting borderline pitches and fouling off other to stay alive.
  14. pretty much my thoughts. i really don't care about saving money in the short-term at all, there's no place for it to go. With the 30 some mil that came off the books last year and went mostly untouched I don't know what benefit an additional 5 or so mil could be. Maybe it makes it more of a lock that we sign Soler? Maybe we have more to give him if perhaps the bidding gets a tad bit higher? We have more than enough to sign Soler regardelss. In addition to what we freed up last year, theres an additional 35 or so mil (Dempster, Byrd, Pena, Zambrano, Baker, Johnson) coming off after this year.

  16. I've heard he hit as high as 94 and that his curveball in the long run can maybe become a plus pitch. Definitely agree that he might take longer in the early going...After all he's from South Africa and IIRC he has played more soccer than baseball. Really athletic though...more than anything that's what I remember taking in. Not sure if he also played American football (QB). American Football? Don't tell me you're one of those people who think that "real football" is the game where they kick around the black and white ball and score once in a great while.
  17. Good things happen when Steve Clevenger leads off the inning.
  18. Don't worry, that's Nuts & Gum. It's his way of welcoming you. He's a big teddy bear.
  19. So basically, in the past 2 days 3 guys have been dispatched from the 25 man roster and they brought up the 3 least intriguing replacements possible. At least Wood, Beliveau, and Sappelt would have provided us with something to follow.
  20. If they do, it doesn't end well. http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/29495228
  21. Not the way he'd been playing so far, which is why it makes no sese to trade him now.
  22. My guess is Ty Wright just to fill the spot. There's really nobody in Tennessee on track. Burgess and Watkins have cooled down and nobody else has done much of anything.
  23. Not that I'll miss Byrd, but unless the +1 is at least somewhat intriguing, what benefit is it to us to be selling as low as possible on Byrd and geting back a guy who looks nothing short of awful and unnecessary? If it was to bring up Jackson, that would be one thing but to give us a 3 headed monster of Campana, Mather, and Johnson in center, I'd just as soon take my chances on Byrd building up his value. My only other explanation is that it's some sort of under the table sorry that the last toy we gave you broke compensation.
