  1. When it comes to these "some guy said" Tweets, is fake Rosenthal any less credible than real Rosenthal?
  2. They probably have one of the wealthiest, if not wealthiest, ownership group in all of baseball. So I'd guess at minimum it's an appeal of a higher salary and more resources. Bigger questions is why Kenny Williams appeals in any capacity to anyone. My thinking is that they wanted to fire him years ago, but he kept waving his ring in Jerry's face, so they promoted him to figure head with an open ended contract so long as he sits on his hands until he gets bored or another job.
  3. Burn in hell for even saying it, Sickels. Seriously. Eh, he could have just as easily said Brandon Wood or Ian Stewart. Olt's just a fresher comp. for any cant miss slugger who misses horribly.
  4. Seeing as Lester hope fades by the day, if we could get Peavy on something incentive based, a Arietta, Peavy, Hammel, and Hendricks, and Wood/Jax/Wada/Turner/Doubront/Straily, we'd be sure to have a well beyond adequate #5. This would be on par with last years rotation that was at times dominant but never got any run support.
  5. I don't remember what was on the table last year, but there seems to be a decent amount of <25 yo, failed or broken, one time legit prospects, which is exactly what this regime has spent the past three years feasting on.
  6. http://i.imgur.com/cDPRrJN.gif Hopefully there will come a time when they're no longer finding new ways to spin that sentiment each winter. I thought we were at that time. Oh well. Maybe Jake Peavy will put his money where his mouth is and give us a discount. And ideally be a bit more durable than a sack of Swarovski.

  8. The way I see it, the Rule 5's like the dollar bin at a used CD shop. You're not likely to strike gold, but who knows, maybe you'll find a forgotten Malkmus side project or that album that you kind of sort of thought about buying 3-4 years ago if it ever went on sale and then forgot about it. But now it's $1, so you buy it, if for no other reason than you found a crumbled up buck in your jacket pocket. If you don't like it, you toss it. You know how they love reclamations and failed prospects under 24-25, and there seems to be a decent amount of these on that list, and I'd be surprised if they passed. I remember De Paula's name coming up in trade chatter a few years back, maybe for Garza. He's an insane flamethrower with control problems. My money's on him.
  9. Seeing as 31 year old Zach Duke just got a 3/15 contract, you'd think that if nothing else, Wright would be a great sign and trade. However, with Arrietta and Valbuena likely end up with hefty raises as well as their existing offseason plans, they simply don't have another 3-5 MM to give Wright, and out of respect for him, rather than make a low ball offer and ultimately head to a hearing, they're giving him more time to find a new gig. That and/or the fact that at 1.4MM, Wesley Wright was a bargain, and rather than give him a substantial raise, they'd rather find a new bargain.
  10. De Paula and Bradley would both be great investments at the cost of a roster spot.
  11. Adam Eaton, Jose Quintana, Carlos Rodon Quintana is better than Shark. Depending on whether Billy's attempting a fire sale or simply add offense, Alexei Ramirez could be a start.
  12. You mean the Cards? Because I read about the Cards not meeting with him, and between that and their trading Shelby Miller, it makes a lot of sense.
  13. Mike Olt's trade value is a sack full of yen and a one way plane ticket.
  14. I could see any of Zych, Amaya, Hernandez, and Ha picked and stashed at the end of someone's roster. Not sure what's become of McNutt, but someone could grab him if his arm still works. Maples or Wells by someone overly ambitious?
  15. http://nesn.com/2014/11/report-jonny-gomes-drawing-legitimate-interest-from-cubs-four-others/ If they want him as a special assistant to the special assistant of something-something, sure.
  16. The glory of an age when every time a guy says something it becomes news until another guy says otherwise.
  17. I saw someone post a slightly older tweet from McCarthy from a few months ago saying he could blow peoples minds and make the case Gomes is more important than Lester. I would like to see that case. I know McCarthy said the 2012 Oakland A's would have been a 70 win team without Gomes and Brandon Inge. He seems to be all in on clubhouse chemistry. http://archive.azcentral.com/insiders/nickpiecoro/2013/03/12/brandon-mccarthy-talks-leadership-analytics-miguel-montero-on-miguel-cabrera-other-stuff/ And then the 2013 A's won 2 more games without Inge, Gomes, or McCarthy McCarthy's comment is not unlike Samardzjia's lobbying for Darwin Barney when he was DFA'd; a guy trying to help his buddies find a job.
  18. It resembles a Hendry move in no way, but it feels like the opposite of what Theo and Co. have been doing, which has been to move on from players who are a safe bet to be adequate but ultimately expendable in favor of guys with a slight glimmer of hope for stardom.
  19. Arodys was an incredibly sexy return for a few months of Paul Maholm, but its been harder and harder to tell myself that his future was as something more than an oft injured back end reliever. In La Stella, we seem to have acquired Steven Bruno's ceiling. I can't imagine he has any bearing on the future of Castro or Baez so much as that of Logan Watkins.
  20. I'd happily take either on an incentive heavy deal.
  21. There is probably nothing to the tampering allegations, but statements like this are still scary as hell. With as strategic as Thoyer are...I'm sure they considered the tampering situation and therefore made sure this could be ruled out. Regarding giving up a top prospect - that's total [expletive], no way they'd be forced to do this. Maddon was making $2M with a chance to make $5M - clearly he's underpaid They can demand anything they damn well want. If they're lucky, they'll get Jeff Antigua and Tony Zych.
  22. Dang. Half a mil buy out. What a brutal contract that turned out to be. They got to do something to shed E. Jax this off season. What's he owed,22 million more or something? I just can't see them rolling him out there next year..Theo even said how he regrets the signing of him. Hopefully if we get Lester or sign someone else they'll bid farewell to him. If they do something like Jax for Upton, than sure. But there's really no reason to just let him take 22M and walk away. I'd just as soon use him in long relief, and if he's still that awful, then let him walk.
  23. Whenever you check in on the sporting news of the day and came across something like this, it's just.. I don't know.
