  1. I'm glad Kenney is on the Cubs side in this debate.
  2. So it looks like the norm is somewhere between 50-60 night games. I'd be happy to see the Cubs move into that lower tier of teams. As much as they want more night games, day baseball at Wrigley still holds cache and adds to the brand.
  3. Oh come on. This is really the least surprising part of this whole saga. I think the least surprising is how the Chicago media has been all, "Manti's story sounds good to me, makes sense". The same people who spread the stupid "amazing kid has overcome so much" nonsense in the first place want the egg off their face as soon as possible.
  4. Who said that? That reads like somebody else's interpretation of what was said and not a direct quote. "Get-concussed"? It was on MLBTR, I assume it was Towers, Gibson, or someone else in the organization. They are not quoting Towers, they are quoting a writer, Jeff Passan. http://sports.yahoo.com/news/snakebitten--d-backs-make-peculiar-decision-to-trade-justin-upton-s--superstar--talent-to-bolster--grinder--culture-041239192.html
  5. I think it's insane to hate the 2nd wild card but be all for such a overly convoluted set-up as the one you propose. Also, Nashville? Your East League is a cesspool of 2nd and 3rd rate MLB cities who will all suffer by not having any big drawing teams come to their stadiums. You want the Braves to play the Phillies and Mets 3 times per season? The White Sox to face the Tigers and Indians only 3 times? You've just bankrupted half the league.

  7. You'd be better off with a team in NJ (Hudson County) than Brooklyn.
  8. There is not one thing even remotely stupid about that.
  9. That could be fun, but the problem is we'd be looking at a rewrite of the script when it comes to how the team will go about spending money on the actual product on the field. Presumably that type of decision is not close to happening. They would have to turn around and work the with the state and some other town to start the process, then probably go out and spend a hell of a lot more than they were intending on spending on the Wrigley upgrade. It would mean years of waiting for that new stadium while staying in Wrigley without any increased revenue streams in the meantime.
  10. Sure seems that way. Seems to me like the language leaves some room for things like extra night games and more ads, which is essentially what the Cubs are asking for in return of investing in the neighborhood/stadium. An extension "that would include a limit" doesn't say to me an extension of the exact same limit. The next several things are relatively meaningless. "A limit on street closures" seems like a reasonable request so as not to allow them to shut the street down permanently, or for every event. There's room for negotiation there. That seems to be something the Cubs should be amenable to. I don't think Ricketts believes he's going to get carte blanche here, he can't expect to get everything they asked for.
  11. Cleveland has summers, and play most of their games east of the Mississippi. But it is Cleveland.
  12. Depends on what kind of service your are expecting.
  13. i don't understand why this is exciting without knowing any other details. movement is fun
  14. Paul Sullivan being Paul Sullivan: I think he thinks he's saying something witty and interesting.
  15. I am completely opposed to the suburban ballpark idea, but if they can't get reasonable responses in negotiations they have to explore it. At the very least, somewhere in the city but outside of that neighborhood. $500M can get you a long way. They won't be able to use a move to another part of the city as any sort of realistic leverage. Plus, you need the land in the first place, which won't come cheap anywhere desirable in the city.
  16. So, did Arizona just decide they couldn't market a black star in Phoenix or something?

  18. The accusation was not made toward Trestman. What is he supposed to refute? He's a lawyer, is he not? I'm sure he sees no upside to responding to this stupid storyline.
  19. Summer of the heat wave. I might have been at that game. Why is McRae wearing long sleeves? Did he always do that?
  20. Aren't they pretty much guaranteed to at least do some subtracting at this point? Also, isn't Hairston the Jeff Baker type?
  21. He's negotiating on the side of the tax payer (in theory) and has no incentive to do anything but downplay the impact.
  22. It's more peacocking than spiking the ball in Ricketts face. He's boasting to voters how he was able to avoid screwing them to help a rich man, while keeping the door open to do exactly what the Cubs said they would like to see done.
  23. Would you sit in the second row of a sky box or only the first?
  24. Well for one, they are not the furthest from the action (Home runs, hello?). Second anyone sitting in the bleachers can see more of the field than anyone sitting under the deck (I believe the 400 section and beyond). Third, they are not among the most expensive seats in the park, is that some sort of joke? Besides the first few sections around home plate and down the lines, they are the best seats in the park. They are among the more expensive only on the resale market for nice days games. They certainly can be the worst, or among the worst for any one game. And they are at least in the discussion overall. Being close to the occasional homerun is not really close to the action, since most of the action takes place very far from where any homerun lands. A huge part of the upper deck is better than the bleachers. Relatively few seats are actually worse.
