Modern era guys have playoff numbers that dwarf their predecessors, since they play so many more games, and more guys can get in. It blurs the "he was a clutch playoff performer" argument that dolts like this like to use.

Now, if only the theory that the Yankees have been granted a reprieve from the luxury tax (with the ARod thing) and now won't choose to blow past it is feasible... I thought the ARod thing left them with room to add Tanaka and stay below. -
What the hell is his own defense anyway? The guy isn't really known as a guru of any system. My feeling is that he had a tough sell job with the vets returning last year, and did an okay job. But he did a horrible job adjusting the weaknesses of the defense as the season went along. He didn't have to install some complicated offense like Trestman. Defenses are much easier to tweak midseason, and he did nothing to tweak it in a positive direction. When they got Lovie we knew Lovie was a disciple of the Tampa 2 and an accomplished defensive mind that actually had success. What the heck is Tucker's defensive reputation based on? He coached DBs in college for five years, then four years of pro and then seemingly became the default defensive coordinator of bad defenses after his boss was fired. He was an NFL D coordinator in his late 30's, which is pretty impressive, but when that happens you typically hear about what that coordinator's calling card is. Does this guy have a calling card or has he just run his boss's defense (Crennel, Del Rio) or the defense of the man his boss replaced (Lovie)?

Being a cynic doesn't make you smarter or right either, as much as you try to insinuate. Yes, because it is somehow cynical to be disappointed in how much the Cubs are losing.

You would have bet quite a lot he wouldn't have thrown on 1st down with 2:02, right? First down with 2:02 is perfect time to throw.

I love how blind support for doing it the right way involved winning consistently, which completely ignored all the losing consistently in the meantime. The fact that you aren't angry at the cubs doesn't make you a better person as much as you try to insinuate.

Floor isn't the decider. Bryant is almost a lock to be good, but he can be great. He has the floor and ceiling that almora can't compare with. -
You'll never know if that is the case though, and any reports suggesting it to be the case will be suspect. That is why the only thing that matters is if they actually do sign the guy. We can hear about interest and offers, and the willingness to spend, but as long as the actual spending does not go up, I don't see any way to take solace in the notion that they would theoretically spend more in a different world. The money is there. That much is obvious. The willingness to allow it to be spent is the question. And if there was a report that said that the Cubs bid was $50 million less than the winning bid and that management was held back on orders from ownership, we should just dismiss that one, too? The onus is on them to actually spend, not just have reporters indicate they were willing to spend.

I still don't get this narrative, he wasn't even close to a bust. He came closer to fulfilling his contract than he did to busting it. It probably didn't help matters that the current regime came in with the narrative that the previous regime ruined our chances to win with albatross contracts. Then they spent a couple years talking up the hopes to trade Soriano, and could not. Then they finally did give him away for very little, and paid for the right to do so. Soriano's time in Chicago wasn't really a bust, but his time under contract to the Cubs hasn't even expired yet.

But that is a pointless question. It does not matter what somebody believes about the actual level of interest. I want to believe it is legit. But I don't know. And you don't know either. The only proof they are willing to spend is to actually spend.

They do because he's asking SSR if he THINKS it's all for show. If SSR doesn't think the interest is fake and does think they will make Tanaka a real offer, why does it need to be signed to be proof of them not being in payroll hell for 5 years? If he thinks they are willing and ready to spend a lot of money on Tanaka, that should be enough for him not to think they are going to be in payroll hell for years. I think what SSR made clear was that barring an actual signing, reports of interest are meaningless to him.

They gave him market value without a bidding war, Tanaka is completely different. One guy at 13 mil per since they bought the team is not an indication they're going well above teams that have shown they'll spend anything they want. I don't get what you're saying. Obviously they have chosen not to spend a lot of money, but I think the point is they have also shown they do have the ability to spend money when they want to. And we all know they actually do have the money to spend.

Do you think that the Tanaka interest is just for show? Or is it a "FA doesn't want our money" thing on top of a limited payroll? It doesn't matter if its for show or not. I'm sure they want to sign him, but as N&G said, why would he sign here? What would compel him to come here as opposed to a team poised to content with better facilities? Interest is great, but they have to turn that interest into results. It completely matters within the context of the discussion between SSR and TT.... Wait, this is going all over the place. SSR said he fears payroll will remain low for 5 years and that the only thing that would convince him otherwise is if they sign Tanaka. Their level of interest in Tanaka, or his reasons for not picking the Cubs do not matter in this context. The context of the discussion is that the Cubs have to prove they are willing to spend for him to believe they are willing to spend and the only way to do that is to actually spend, not just hint that they have an interest in spending.

I'm not counting on it, just based on how these guys have been operating so far, but the fact is they can easily afford Tanaka, so I am also not discounting their ability to sign him.

Probably. But it's mean if it's not. It's like the Devils and 76ers pre-announcing a major announcement this week (they are owned by same group) and then just announcing that they struck a sponsorship deal with a poker website.
