College football has an even short seasons and a very short list of predetermined champions. The bowl system changes the stakes a bit to make it a more difficult one to one comparison, and we're crossing streams a bit sport-wise, but college football is way less pretermined than the NBA. Not only are there so many more teams that even a similar percentage of powerhouses leaves more in doubt as to who wins the title, but the shorter season adds to the stakes because those powerhouses have far less room for error than their NBA counterparts. There's barely a competitive reason to watch an NBA regular season game, while a single loss from an Alabama or an Ohio State could ruin their season. Just one person's opinion, if you love watching the NFL's parity or the athleticism of the NBA, go nuts I say. well I wasn't talking about the nba. Liking college football but not liking NFL does not make sense to me.

He wants them to spend $100M on 3-4 starting pitchers only half kidding I want them to spend something on something this offseason I don't look at this offseason as a specific set of dates on the calendar. I prefer a more flexible method of marking the passage of time where every date is some arbitrary point in the future.

They won't be big spenders, as in they won't be spending $150-$190m on payroll for a while. But with so little committed toward the current roster, that pretty much means they have to be big spenders on 1 or 2 players just to get to the point of being even "medium spenders" for next year's roster.

What's the read here? Stable as in embarrassing 2014 85M payroll stable, or stable as in we held back money this year embarrassing 100M payroll stable? The payroll thing is a little discouraging to me. I don't see how they won't spend at least a little bit this offseason, because of how low the payroll is going to be going into the offseason. But spending a little bit would be a big problem.

not to diminish the miserable level of competition of college athletics, because that point can't be made enough, but generally the HARD CORE fans of any sport are pathetic losers I can't really think of any sporting base that wraps itself in its own glory quite like college football fans though. Entire towns dressed alike, even on non-gamedays. Everything is about the team and they have things like gridiron/letterman/booster dinners and other get togethers where every small town wannabe kingmaker tries to throw his weight around. Just the concept of booster clubs and how they influence decisions related to the teams is crazy. The only comparison may be Cardinals fans.

His bat may be MLB ready (assuming he continues to beat the crap out of the ball), but is anyone expecting him to be ready defensively by 2016? And if they think he has a chance at that, it's more of this kick the can down the road [expletive]. Uh Oh, what if everyone works out to the best case scenario? Then whatever will we do? They might think he's ready defensively by 2016, at least to be able to provide a capable tandem with Castillo. I'm not speaking in absolutes here, their thoughts on how quickly he'll come along defensively matter when deciding to give someone like Martin 3+ years. And it's not this all or nothing strawman either. The money you would spend on Martin doesn't evaporate if you're high on Schwarber's defense and decide not to pursue him. The idea that they could come to the conclusion this offseason that he will be ready defensively by 2016 does not add up for me.

I'm going to guess they will not be playing the intl signing bonus penalty game any longer. They did it when they were tanking and it was a new idea, others are doing it now. My guess is they will either try and play it more straight up or the league will just make another rule that makes it even less likely to work.

i don't disagree with much of this, particularly the bolded, but that is something that's quantifiable* and even with those habits he's still quantifiably a very good player, so what's the problem here? it's not even one of those dumb issues we had with Soriano/Ramirez where you start bringing in a player's salary into the discussion and argue they should be held to a higher standard *per UBR, he's cost the club less than 2 runs with his baserunning but len kasper thought Castro should be held to a higher standard, whatever that meant. You should disagree with the "repeatedly" phrasing.

I couldn't take it seriously after they said McCown was a better QB than Cutler. why your team sucks is not meant to be taken seriously. magary routinely belittles his own football analyzing ability. These are mostly about fans hating their own team and fellow fans.

Well he backed off hard after realizing what he said. Did I miss a tweet? Last thing he posted is that Starlin plays hard but the mental gaffes are a problem. That's not backing off hard IMO. Well you are bad at twitter then. He's called it a moot point given his total value.
