  1. Adam Schefter ‏@AdamSchefter 25m25 minutes ago Giants have parted ways with defensive coordinator Perry Fewell, per league source. He was a favorite for the Bears job at one point, right?
  2. There is no Maddon. If anything, Shanahan is the closest thing to a Maddon. He's not Dale Freaking Sveum. The fact is the GM isn't really starting fresh. You have big contracts with cap ramifications this year. You can accelerate the fresh start by cutting everybody, taking the hit and maybe drafting first next year. That would be a fresh start. But I think that type of Cubs like dive is dumb and inappropriate. There is no established GM with a proven track record of hiring the right guys. I'd rather give a guy a few years to get the lay of the land as a GM with his own staff than tie him to his first hire as a long-term situation. Whoever the next coach is, if he wins, he will gain more and more power. The responsibility for winning next year is on the next coach. The responsibility for winning longterm is on the GM.
  3. Spring Training is like spring itself. The first sign of warming weather, the first 60 degree and sunny Saturday, is amazing. But as spring goes along you still get stuck with crappy weather dampening the spirits. I absolutely look forward to spring training, as well as opening day. But baseball really isn't at its best until at least June, when you can attend games without coats.
  4. Take Cutler out of the equation. I think Shanahan is the only established Super Bowl winning head coach on the market with a history of winning in multiple locations. He's won with multiple quarterbacks, including mediocre kids, stars on the decline and journeymen veterans. That resume is the best one on the market. Now add the fact that he has a history with Cutler and there are multiple good reasons to consider him the best option for the next 3-4 years. He is old, but he's practically the same age that Coughlin was when he won his first SB and younger than he was when he won his second. He's also younger than Pete Carroll and Bill Belichick.
  5. If the Bears do move on from Cutler in a couple years, and Shanahan is the head coach. He will have failed and he will probably not be the guy to make the next selection. Presumably, an entrenched GM would then get the chance to start fresh at that time. You avoid throwing away the future by not trading anymore future draft picks, whether that is for current veterans or even moving up in the draft. They can hire a GM and Shanahan, try and win the next couple years without levering the future and while still turning over the roster with younger players. I'm not necessarily saying he has to be the guy, but there is nobody currently out there who is a better bet to win the next few years and no obvious better choices. There's a bunch of lottery tickets out there with the same resumes as a million previous failed head coaches.
  6. McNair sat for a couple years but he also had a 7-year contract. Back in the 90s you could have your first round QB sit and "learn". Nowadays I do not think teams are willing to let early 1st round QBs sit for 2 years, "wasting" 2 of their 4 rookie contract years. Johnny Manziel had no business playing at all this year, yet even as a 22nd pick they were pressured into using him. Winston isn't going to be able to sit for 2 years.
  7. The Bears signed John Tait because of Chad Hutchinson.
  8. Scientific? Who said it was? Logical? Bears said next coach/GM will determine if Cutler is back. Obviously they don't feel he's the longterm answer if there's even a question now. Why hire a guy to make the best of 2 years in the grand scheme of things? Because in the grand scheme of the NFL the only thing that matters is the next couple years. You can't determine where this team will be 8-10 years from now this offseason. You get the most out of what you have and then replace as needed.
  9. Yeah, the Blackhawks played the part of Varlamov's wife last night. Freaking scumbag. Too soon? But they were the ones taking all the shots.
  10. Adam Schefter ‏@AdamSchefter 4m4 minutes ago ESPN report: Jameis Winston's father says he will enter NFL draft. Possible No. 1 overall pick.
  11. What the hell are you talking about raw? They hired Martz and fired martz because of jay? They fired lovie because of jay? They signed Orlando pace because of jay? This is all ridiculous. They fired lovie because they didn't win enough and hired trestman because emery was a good who bought his book. The Bears wanted to go from a defense first team that didn't win enough to an offense centric team that won more, but their head coach can't lead for squat and nobody bought his schtick. The narrative that this has been all about jay does not hold up.
  12. and don't call him Shirley.

  15. He uses Brian Baldinger's finger as an ear.
  16. Rich Campbell ‏@Rich_Campbell 1m1 minute ago Multiple sources indicate Texans DProP Brian Gaine is on the Bears' schedule for GM interview today. Bears have not confirmed that, though.
  17. Mike Garafolo ‏@MikeGarafolo 25m25 minutes ago Sources tell @alexmarvez and me Dolphins are expected to hand over football operations to Mike Tannenbaum in the near future. Story coming.
  18. That's the argument for trading Cutler now and moving on, I think. If you view the new coach as the next long term direction, and Cutler has his own shelf life, why not start over entirely ASAP? The answer to your question is because quarterbacks don't grow on trees. You could trade him tomorrow and never come close to competent QB play for 10 years, enough to cycle through 2-3 more administrations. Cutler gives you the best chance to be competitive next year and going forward until you find (probably draft and develop) his replacement.
  19. Shanahan may be perceived as best for Cutler, but that may only be a side story. I think Shanahan might be the best option for the Bears to win in the next 4 years. And I don't give a [expletive] about who the coach is going to be 8 years from now. Shanahan's kid will not be the next coach unless they win a hell of a lot over the next few years, and quite frankly, that's quite a nice problem to have. Kyle also already has a job and would not necessarily ever be employed by the Bears.
  20. Mike Tunison ‏@xmasape 38s38 seconds ago Conflicting reports about whether Scot McCloughan is the new 'Skins GM. For his sake, let's hope it's not true.
  21. What is wrong with Mike Shanahan? People say he did nothing without Elway, but most of his time in Denver was without Elway. The Broncos were barely average in the years before he got there. He won 11 games with Brian Griese and 10+ three years in a row with Jake Plummer (including one 13 win season). He got a pro bowl season out of Cutler and Washington's only playoff appearance in a decade. He's not going to be your coach for the next 10 years, but I think you can do a lot worse than him. And we're basically looking for an unknown guy to match what he has done.
  22. He was at his worst when he had pneumonia and got better as he recovered.
  23. As an aside, I believe Toub's early coaching was as a defensive guy.
  24. forgive me in advance, but i'll laugh for days if those are your two coordinators I thought about you after i wrote it. Spurned fans of failed head coaches often laugh at people for hiring them as coordinators. It's kind of a dumb mindset to take.
  25. I keep forgetting about Kubiak's health issues when considering his candidacy, might be why he hasn't taken interviews yet.
