  2. Are you familiar with the Bears? The all star break happens around the same time every year and training camp begins around the same time every year, meaning there is nothing to cover roughly two weeks before training camp, every year. The Tribune covering the countdown to training camp is not some random decision they made because it's a slow week.
  3. I don't think anyone in the minors not named Schwarber is or should be an (within reason) untouchable. I don't think Schwarber should be untouchable.
  4. 2013 was scary because of the overhang of Trestman being a potential dud, but there was probably more excitement. I think this is the least amount of excitement for me since pre-Lovie. I was a huge proponent of them bringing in Lovie.
  5. http://deadspin.com/what-is-the-value-of-a-ballgame-1717963147 I agree very much with what Mr. Ley is saying here.
  6. Oduya signed with Dallas
  7. Yes, a few people have brought up the idea that it's not simply a choice you can make based on your preferred pitcher. Rest and availability will probably be the deciding factors.

  9. That is a bizarre wish. None of those guys is hurting the Cubs right now and none of them are in the way of a better player.
  10. All that just eliminates what has been a successful TV pull. Nobody will watch a DH at a neutral site (nor will anybody attend a neutral site game). Nobody will watch a play-in series until and unless there is an elimination game. The 1 game playoff exists and is good for two important reasons. 1) Public interest (in the game itself and in the chance to open up the playoff race to more teams/cities/fan bases) 2) To differentiate between division winners and wild cards winners. You reward division winners for winning their division. If you don't want the vagaries of a one game playoff, win your division.
  11. I'm just guessing, but I imagine they'll prefer having more division races, not less. With 2 wild cards per league, top 2 division winners avoid the 1(or probably 3) game playoffs? Maybe keep the 5 teams and go like this: Best Division Winner 1 vs. Wild Card 2 vs. Wild Card 3 Winner (3 game series) in a 7 game series 2nd Best Division Winner vs. Wild Card 1 in a 7 game series Rewards both the best record as well as the best wild card team while keeping 5 teams making the playoffs. So, overall playoff odds go down (now 10/32 instead of 10/30), but those that make the playoffs get at least 3 games AND rewards Best Record and Top Wild Card (in the event that the 2 best teams are in the same division). I think the one game play-ins are a great way to build excitement immediately and are a television hit as a guaranteed elimination game. They outranked all division series games last year. 3 game play in series for wild card (with the 1 seed taking a full week off as a result) would quickly diminish interest.
  12. Would it *actually* be pointless to turn a soon to be 33 year old RHSP coming off the best two half seasons of his career into a highly regarded, healthy young arm yet to break out like a Daniel Norris? I don't think it's pointless so much as it hard to believe that selling high on Hammel could even be a possibility at this point in time. Couldn't the FO just yell out arbitrage and dual fronts to explain it? It would be pretty cool if they refused to do a press conference and instead just yelled out ARBITRAGE! while the reporters hustle to get an explanation for such a trade.
  13. This seems like a terrific place to discuss it.
  14. The Cubs trading away Hammel? That would be a nutso ballsy sell high even though we're right in the midst of the playoff hunt move.
  15. I look forward to you telling us how dumb the all-star game is every [expletive] year. The game is not dumb, just pointless. The people who care about it are dumb. Those who only pretend to care are just odd.
  16. He's getting worked up about who is the starting pitcher for the AL. That is silly.
  17. I get that Keuchel is really good. I also get that Chris Sale is better and a hell of a lot more fun to watch pitch. And Kluber got robbed. Are you upset about the all star game lineup?
  18. pretty happy I missed this while putting the kid to sleep last night. Also looking forward to ignoring the all star game. Wednesday and Thursday will be a bummer though when I have no pointless baseball to ignore.
  19. I don't think you know what semantics means. There is a very large difference between nationality and ethnicity. That is the point. Most people in that thread pointed out that difference and this guy took offense from being corrected. It's not a minor distinction.
  20. Are you kidding me right now? Given the substance of this thread, you are really still going to nitpick over the fact that I accidentally used the word "nationality" instead of "ethnicity"? This is the type of [expletive] I'm talking about. . You act as though you have made some profound statements. You completely misrepresented what happened in that thread. dont get pissed off at other people because you don't know what nationality means.
  21. I continue to be amazed by how easy it is to impress Tim kurkjian with incredibly pointless factoids.
  22. Funny that Mike Martz was the only non-disaster as a coach he's had. Head or OC. Hell, the DCs have been jokes most of the time too. From incompetent (Tucker) to Babich just there for show, the Bears as an organization has been terrible since the Cutler trade. Lovie was far from a disaster. But, yes, everyone else has been a joke. lovie and marinelli were both good in their roles.
  23. Well then if you are talking about that then the increased "strategy" a pitcher must use to face a 9th quality hitter negates any lost should I pinch hit questions. Also, only idiots double switch their best hitters.
  24. There's still plenty of fans of it. Just a lot of people are willing to give it up if it means standardizing the rules across the league, as they realize that the DH isn't ever going away in the AL. There's no GD strategy in baseball. It's out out out out out 1 run out out game over. Ah, but to get that one run could require 15 decisions in the NL. I love it! and every one of those decisions is: should we pinch hit for our shitty hitting pitcher? Not yet. should we pinch hit for our shitty hitting pitcher? Not yet. should we pinch hit for our shitty hitting pitcher? Not yet.
