Have you ever played goalie? Better yet, can you even skate? Goalie takes years to learn. A hard puck moving at 100 mph towards your grill will freak 99% of the population out, not to mention having to brace yourself in a perfect position while on two blades of steel. Literally any other position is easier to learn. I can ice skate and I used to play roller hockey, and I had friends that played fairly competatively in high school and college. You can't tell me that probably half of their roster has some experience playing goalie when they were young. And THEY are the ones used to having 100 mph pucks shot at them, and that's without a goalie mask. Not sure that the rec leagues that these 40 year old, ex-college goalies are getting their reps in has prepared them for NHL slapshots. All that said, I can buy that they would fare better than Joe 4th line defender, but I'm most curious how teams were allowed to use non-rostered players in the first place. Every kid on our mite team rotates through goalie, and our best skaters are the absolute worst at goalie. By the time they are 10 they will either play goalie or not. But having experience as a 12 year old and then suiting back up as a 25 year old is night and day. https://thehockeynews.com/news/article/the-inside-story-on-the-oddity-that-is-the-emergency-backup-goalie-and-why-it-could-soon-change
