  1. Personally I wouldn't call this pure anger. If you ask me, it was one of the calmest trade threads ever on this board. Most people were resigned to the fact Barrett was going, not a lot of people are ecstatic about the deal, but there's only been a couple people who've gone ballistic. Bowen's been a mediocre producing catcher in his pro career who is having a good 2007 but probably won't sustain the numbers. He'd be a nice cheap backup for a team with a good starter, but he's probably not starter material himself, at least in the long haul, but he'll be stable defensively. The kid whose parents were desperate for a name that started with K has some physical ability but hasn't done jack squat as a pro (600 OPS in rookie ball and sub 600 in low A ball).
  2. I think everyone on this board with any baseball sense has agreed that the argument you stated above is moronic. Did that come out wrong?
  3. Depth, and 2008. They don't have a franchise catcher right now. But they do have another capable body. I think they like Hill in the short-term, but I don't think they'll put up with his non-existing offense for long. Soto and Bowen are probably the two best catchers on the 40 man roster now. Hopefully by 2009 Donaldson can throw himself into the mix.
  4. Are they? I don't think Burke talk has been the focus. He's largely inconsequential.
  5. He wouldn't necessarily be getting bigger. As he got older the bulk probably slowed him down. He's not small again.
  6. The more I look at it the more I think this is a Jim "I like tools" Hendry moment. Last year in the Arizona Fall League he played in 45 games, k'd 56 times and put up thses numbers: .209/313/.294/.607 Not too different from this year and in Arizona!. I hope the Cubs send him back to Boise. Maybe he just needs a good hitting instructor. That was the Arizona Rookie League. You'd hope an 18 year old coming out of high school wouldn't be over his head there.
  7. Generally speaking you're right, such a blanket statement isn't all that accurate. However, for guys in the low minors to strike out so frequently, it's a huge warning sign. Major leaguers who produce good numbers but strikeout a lot are perfectly acceptable. Minor leaguers who K a lot put up a red flag. Minor leaguers who K a lot and don't produce worth a crap are really big red flags.
  8. It'd be nice if this was setting up another future trade for Jones with the Padres, at the very least. Haven't we heard this before, where a deal goes down and then speculation comes about that it sets up another deal with the same team later on? It would be really odd if they revisited a Jones to SD deal later.
  9. i don't know why the hell that deal would even have been reported. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. And the Padres are really going to give up a young, relatively productive shortstop for two pieces of trash and a half-season upgrade at catcher? Come on. I try and ignore any "the original deal was" talk. It's most likely a bunch of nonsense.
  10. It shows his athletic ability, organizations use the SPARQ tests in baseball. Vertical leap is one aspect of it. It's just another tool of many to grade a prospect on. http://www.crossoveracademy.net/sparq.htm Well I'll take your word for it....I still have difficulty though seeing how dunking a basketball translates into hitting a baseball. Michael Jordan didn't exactly turn out too hot as far as baseball goes... :P I wouldn't confuse the fact that baseball organizations note such accomplishments with the fact that it's worth a damn. It's a pointless observation.
  11. Not really. He has been complete crap so far in the minors. and he's a teenaged player coming from a region where he faced relatively poor competition in high school. I'm not saying he's a future star, but he does have some tools that the scouts like, and most raw 19 year old players would have been playing at short-season A-ball, not the Midwest League. He was just as bad in rookie ball.
  12. Why do people act as if Barrett never caught Maddux? The whole personal catcher thing is overblown. Barrett caught for Maddux a lot.
  13. His numbers are more of the problem than the Twins willingness to move him.
  14. He and DLee are friends. It shouldn't change anything. I know, but wasn't it tied to some sort of performance metric?
  15. I'm surprised he got so specific as to the reasons for trading Barrett. Usually it's more of a "we really liked what he did for us but we like what the new guy does as well".
  16. Barrett traded. Barrett and Patterson for Linebrink and Bowen. That's not good. Barrett for Bowen and some low A guy. Meh.
  17. I'm not sure that's the case. He's dealt with 4-5 more frequently than others, but he's dealt with teams outside that circle as well. He's dealt with Beane. He dealt with the Indians for Gerut and dealt him to the Pirates, and he's dealt with the Pirates for others as well. He worked with Atlanta more than once, same with Boston. He's traded with Montreal (Macias and Barrett), Milwaukee (Grieve). He dealt with both the Rangers and Twins on deals involving Nevin. I don't see any problem with this particular trend.
  18. How does this affect Barrett's pledge to contribute to Project 3000?
  19. I'd start Barrett over Bard, why would Barrett be the backup? Even if he does start over Bard, his offensive numbers this year are not that much better...even if you start him, considering defense and money is he really a 4.2 million (and a prospect) improvement over what they had? Barrett's numbers so far in 2007 aren't necessarily what he's going to do the rest of the way. He had an awful May but has been solid in June, and they probably think his numbers will continue to look like they have in June because of what he's done for the past 3 years.
  20. he didn't write it up - it was a scouting report. I guess to show his athleticism? I understand, my point is why is anybody listing it. It's useless info that tells us absolutely nothing about his ability to play baseball. Because athletic ability has nothing to do with baseball. Random athletic feats have nothing to do with baseball. It's like being able to jump over a car. Although winning your high schools slam dunk contest is even less impressive. The guy who won my high school slam dunk contest never played a minute of sports beyond high school.
  21. How does the whole world decide which lucky team will get the Cubs castoffs at 60 cents on the dollar? If you're an owner of some other team do you not ask your GM why he isn't the one ripping off the Cubs? Who knows, but it does disturb anyone else that Jim also seems to be trading with the same three or four damn teams over and over again? Didn't he go with the Fish at least twice (the Pierre deal, Clement / Six Fingers, and Lee), the Tigers twice (Farns and Neifi), the O's twice (Sosa and Patterson), and now SD twice (Williamson and Barret)? I know he sprinkled in deals with the Braves (Cruz), Giants (Hawkins), and both Sox (Nomar and Aardsma), but this patten concerns me greatly. I think I have officially lost any glimmer of hope that Jim has a clue as to where this thing is going. I know many of you jumped ship long ago. I was just holding out a scintilla; now even that is gone. (see my sig) The fact that he's hit up some of the same teams doesn't really bother me. It's the results his teams have put up that bothers me. GMs tend to build relationships with other GMs that make trade negotiations easier (or in the case of some GMs, more difficult).

  23. why list that he won his high school's slam dunk contest?
