  1. Who were the people who actually thought they were good in the first place? I was fooled..I admit it. Tsk. Tsk. Thou shalt not buy into NSBB hype. Wait a minute, we're writing off Fontenot (or even Theriot, for that matter) after 41 career ML ABs, in which is OPS is over 1.000? I just want to be clear about this. B/c if Fontenot is disappointing some of you with his performance so far, you really should turn off the TV, shut down the computer, and walk away from baseball forever. He's not going to OPS 1.000 for his career. He might end up being the worst player to ever play the game. But he's been fantastic in his very short ML career. To say "the honeymoon is over" b/c he's 0/2 today is the dumbest thing I've read in a while. The honeymoon started with just a couple of games. I don't see why it can't end just as quickly. For some the honeymoon began when they saw him producing very solid numbers in the minor leagues.
  2. We don't really have much better of an option. A better option would be to not use either guy every day. Cesar is putting up a line of .250/.306/.306 at SS while Theriot is .177/.253/.190 at SS.
  3. Hey, nobody got picked off. That's an improvement.
  4. Theriot is about 0 for June right now. He really needs to start sitting. He's been awful since moving into everyday duty.
  5. Has Padilla always been a slow worker? I never remember it being that much of an issue.
  6. Gameday had ball 3 slightly above right down the middle.
  7. I wouldn't want to play for the Cubs either. Well, odds are he never will, so he's got that going for him.
  8. It doesn't have to be baseball's, it could be golfballs, softballs, tennisballs. I'll take hockey pucks. And I'll go as far as to take badmiton birdies. One shuttlecock shall do.
  9. I'd consider getting rid of Soriano and his ridiculous contract. That doesn't mean I don't like Alfonso or his play this year, I just think its ridiculous to be paying him $15 million when hes 38. There is no team out there that's going to take on Soriano's contract. We're stuck with him. just like we're stuck with Marquis. Since that complete game shutout his ERA is around 5.35. Real Marquis isn't fun.
  10. This morning it was listed on channel 734 on Directv.
  11. I don't know man, Fontenot might be able to get 6 if he gets 350 at bats. If he gets the full-time 2B job, and 650 ABs, you might get 10-12.
  12. If he asked for one, they are better off. They should be able to demand 100% devotion to the franchise. This isn't small conference college football.
  13. There's always someone discovering the Minor Leagues for the first time. Be gentle. I wasn't trying to be harsh at all, just pointing him in the direction where he might get the information he's looking for.
  14. 3 Kroeger threads on 3 consecutive minor league pages. Hopefully he keeps producing so we can get one each time the pages turn over. By then he might warrent a callup. Am I the only one who thinks of these guys when this name is mentioned? http://www.siyumhaseinfeld.com/images/chars/kruger2.jpg http://www.acmewebpages.com/graphics/hulce.jpg

  17. You say that as if you're scared he'll haunt the team. He's 32 years old, has a career OPS+ of 100, and has been below that level in 6 of his 9 seasons. Even if he gets back to his 06 or 03 form, he's still nobody to fear.
  18. I really don't think many people think he's an upgrade over Barrett, certainly not offensively. And I don't think anybody thinks of him as a savior. Hopefully he and Bowen fill the spot for a few years until Donaldson develops. I can live with slightly below NL average offense out of catcher out of a couple of $350,000 players who are good defensively, as long as the Cubs fix the SS and RF problems. The 8th ranked NL catching team is at .272/.299/.401 The 9th ranked NL catching team is at .254/.301/.392 A Bowen/Soto combo should be able to threaten those levels.
  19. You realize he's a catcher right? If somebody is thinking he'll match his 2007 AAA numbers, they will be sorely mistaken. But that's not the only time he's put up decent minor league numbers. Again, he's a catcher. The major leagues are littered with catchers who can't even sniff Soto's minor league numbers. I don't think anybody is thinking he's a lock for 10 year starter or a good bet for a future all star game. He's a cheap alternative to what they have who actually provides some upside that nobody else on the roster provides. Even if he fails to match his pre 2007 averages, he stands a good chance of providing offense that half the league isn't getting from catcher. 8 teams are getting sub 700 OPS production from the catcher spot. Thanks to the 600 OPS by Koyie Hill and 384 OPS by Henry Blanco, the Cubs are in that group, with a line of just .236/.288/.382. I would say it would actually be very difficult for Soto not to be an improvement over that.
  20. Not being great starters does not mean they have no business being in the majors. That's an incredibly stupid post. Soto had a good 2004 in AA, a good 2006 in AAA and is having a very good 2007 in AAA. Catchers generally take a little longer to develop. It's conceivable Soto could put up numbers between his pre 2007 minor league average .262/.344/.371 and his current numbers .324/.397/.555. If he managed to put up even his pre 2007 minor league average, he'd be doing better than what 11 NL teams are getting from their catcher spot.
  21. Bingo! You're the best caller of the show. End of story, no deal. Not so fast. It really depends on what salaries the Reds are willing to take back, and what the teams decide on the deferred money issue. For example, if Hendry could trade a subset of players, whose 2008 contracts offset Griffey's 2008 salary, I don't think the Trib would stand in his way. but who would we be talking about, then? seems like it would have to be several... His 2008 salary is $12.5m right? $6.5m of that is deferred. So the team that gets him owes him $6m in 2008. Jacque eats up most of that himself. That deferred money, over time, will be next to nothing for them to worry about.
  22. If I needed a 5th OF with a little pop and could convince the Cubs to pay all but the minimum for him, I'd be interested.
  23. I think he's trying harder because he wants to be traded and knows nobody wants him. He's screwed either way. If he gets traded, it's likely going to mean somebody wanted a part time player. If he stays, he gets to hear it from the Chicago fans for 1.5 more seasons, and he probably will still end up a part time player. Let this be a lesson to players of MLB. If you can't take criticism and jeering when you underperform your pay, don't bother asking the Cubs for a contract. Just because the GM is an idiot and thinks you're worth 6M a year doesn't mean the fans will agree. I honestly don't see an ounce of effort out of him. He goes up there looking to make the quickest out possible.
  24. Who wants to bet this is Texas' evil plan to get Lou to keep putting Jacque in the lineup so they can "get a look", only they just want the easy out?
