    No way, he'd get sued for all he's got, and possibly face jail time. It's one thing to get pissed off over a few million dollars in overpayment for a draftee, but to counteract that with screwing around with something that'll amount to hundreds of millions, if not a billion dollars, would not fly.

    I would consider Atlanta's run a dynasty however I understand if people feel differently. That's why I called them an exception. If it was a 5-6 year run with 1 ring they aren't, but that run was unprecedented and tremendous.

    There's quite a few 22 year old and older players on the list. Are these guys converting from one position to another, rehabbing or starting over? Or are they recently drafted college players who aren't advanced enough for Boise? Is the extremely college heavy draft making it difficult to come up with 17/18 year old players for Mesa?

    I'm curious about that as well. Perhaps there are some other things he overlooks and he's just threatening to enforce those things if teams don't cooperate. There's the money rule in trades, where the commish can veto any trade involving more than $1m. It would be like cops harrassing somebody by ticketing them every time they go 1 mph over the speed limit.

    If they fail to make a run in the next month, or at least draw closer, I'd hope they would shut him down.

    Looking up and down the Cardinals roster and their minor league system, I would steer clear of this guy. Sure, he lucked into a World Series Championship this year, but he most certainly didn't build a dynasty. He's better than Hendry, but that ain't sayin' much. Pretty close to a dynasty unless WS rings is your only criteria. I wouldn't say anywhere close to a dynasty. Rings are the most important category if you're talking dynasty. 1 doesn't cut it. The only exception is what Atlanta did with their incredible run and 1 ring.

    In the last 11 years the Cardinals have won seven divison titles, two NL pennants and a World Series. In the last 11 years the Cubs have won one division title (by one game) and one wild card. But did he trade for DLee and Ramirez?

    One could argue that's what the Barrett trade was. That was tossing deck chairs off the titanic, because they thought the deck chairs were weighing the thing down.

    I gave Barrett partial blame from the outset. Z started the argument, Barrett chose to escalate, and they both chose to get physical at the same time. I don't recall Barrett escalating anything. He gestured towards DeRosa I believe it was to ask his opinion on something after Z bitched him out and then Z slugged him. Not even close. The first physical contact was each player grabbing at each other. Right before it happened Z was backing up and Barrett was moving toward him.

    yeah, i was gonna say, losing koyie hill should be at the bottom of the cubs concerns. With the sudden influx of young catching depth, concerns about losing Koyie Hill should be completely non-existent. Worst case scenario if you lose him is you still have Bowen and Soto for the rest of the year. You have Blanco still under contract through 2008. Donaldson just signed. Fox is not going to stick as a starting big league catcher, but he provides emergency type depth at the position.

    Normally I just hope to see the Cubs win a series. But it's getting to the point where they have to take advantage of the matchups agianst the worst teams by sweeping a series or two. After the White Sox the Cubs face a hot Rockies team and the Brewers. If they lose all three series, and Milwaukee wins their series against KC and HOU, the Cubs are suddenly 11.5 back and pretty much out of it.

    There's a 48 hour window for all trade talk, this deal went down Wednesday morning so any and all discussion revolving around the deal must cease and desist ASAP. Does that mean we can't bitch about the Pierre trade anymore? Has he been traded within the past 48 hours?

    Listening to the radio in NY yesterday I heard both a Mets fan and a Yankees fan call up to complain about the lack of fundamentals. I think fundamentals is a catch-all crutch of a complaint whenever a team loses. I honestly don't believe "fundamentals" are the reason the Cubs are losing. The Cubs don't have very good hitters, and they don't have very good pitchers. They do have a couple of hitters and pitchers who are very bad. The Cubs need better players, not just more work on the fundamentals. Over the course of 162 games, there are going to be a lot of "fundamental" mistakes. Outs will be made without advancing runners, guys on third won't be driven in with less than 2 outs. Bunts will turn into pop ups. All that stuff happens to every team. When your team loses, that typically gets the blame. But the bottom line is they need more productive hitters and more effective pitchers.

    Hope he is able to build off the experience. I don't like when teams treat position players like yo-yos, but it's not a bad thing to have a pitcher come up and get some exposure before going back and working on things. Hopefully Sean can build to the point where he's ready to fight for a rotation spot next spring (unless he's needed to fill a spot this year following a trade).

    That's a scary wrist injury for a guy who already lost a bunch of power this season. Tejada's production for 2008 is very uncertain right now, and I think what it would take to get him still would not come down (remember, Angelos won't permit Tejada to be dumped, and he has stopped them from trading Tejada at all before). Yeah, this is what I think. Lee lost power after a broken wrist. Matsui has next to no power after a broken wrist. Choi lost power after a broken wrist. Tejada doesn't have a lot of power left, and he's already relatively old for a middle infielder. The reason you get him is for production right now. Getting him for 2008 reduces his value considerably. But I doubt his trading price is much cheaper. And there's really no way he gets traded while injured. It doesn't happen.

To imitate Barrett, Howry would have had to turn (right after catching the ball) and inexplicably throw the ball behind the runner without even running at the runner. Barrett's play was downright dumb and was a play that a little leaguer would make. Howry got unlucky that the tag missed Lofton by a couple inches. it was a bad play Unlucky =/= bad. Because it wasn't unlucky. There never should have been a threat of missing it by inches.

    He doesn't need work in AAA, he needs to be used as a utility player, not an everyday SS.

    Depends very much on ownership, but I'm not feeling optimistic so I'll say next May. Ownership will change hands sometime in the first quarter of 2008. By then it will be too late to make a change and Trib/McDonough will not bother with an overhaul at the last minute. The owner will allow lame duck Hendry to start the season, but will use the first sign of trouble as a reason to fire him, then they will spend the rest of the year figuring out what to do for 2009. Thanks Andy.

    If the Trib thought a buyer would find more value in the team after Hendry was fired, then possibly. But I highly doubt it. If the sale is delayed, there's a good chance he starts 2008 as a lame duck GM until things are straightened out.
