Unless there's a major shakeup and possibly a trade, I would think that move would wait. They were willing to push their luck for a good 3 weeks talking about the so-called need for 12 pitchers. Now that the entire bullpen is completely rested, I would think they'd be willing to wait another week or two. -
So I logged onto the score to listen online and hear the Soto report, and I'm listening to them talk about potential transactions. Some Indians fan asked about Shoppach for Jones. Boers claimed Shoppach has been around a long time and been really bad. He's 27 and has played in parts of 3 seasons, and is raking this year. Not sure how that qualifies as being around for a long time. And these idiots are talking about Jones as a solid CF who is a .280 hitter that has power. So many people in the media think of players ability as a constant. Jones hit .280 last year. But he is hitting .233 right now and hit .250 the 2 years before coming to Chicago. Sure, he's a .277 career hitter, but he's 32 years old now and has been pretty bad for 3 of the past 4 years. Maybe, just maybe, he's a mediocre player declining toward the tail end of their career. Huh? Maybe?

For once I'm hoping that Levine is the more knowledgeable Bruce. :D If I recall correctly, BMiles doesn't work home weekend series, so maybe he's not around.

Well I hadn't heard anything about other people hearing the same thing or both stations reporting. The fact that both stations are reporting lends more credence, but just a couple weeks ago several posters and several radio stations were reporting the Jones deal as done. All I'm saying is I'm waiting for some actual confirmation of a move. Just read the last page of this thread. Yeah, those were posted after I raised the skepticism.

It's not a matter of you intentionally posting untrue rumors. But it wouldn't be the first time somebody misheard a report, or passed on an erroneous report. I'm just saying I wouldn't assume it's a done deal until we see something substantial.

Really? One person said he heard Bruce Levine report it, correct? Has there been any other confirmation?

Interesting phrase. -
I'm convinced many people just misinterpret reports. Guys go on the radio and say "One of the things the Cubs could do today is call up AAA catcher Geovany Soto from Iowa" and many people think they heard Soto was called up. Not saying that happened here or not, but it's definitely happened in the past. But we probably wouldn't hear anything official until tomorrow, unless a trade happens today. No need to make a roster move until game time.

He's never hit for power. But I wouldn't say he's never been good. He's always had a decent amount of patience and hit for an acceptable AVG/OBP combo, for a catcher. He's just never hit for power. But catchers routinely take a little while to develop and power is always the last thing to come. His numbers last year in AAA, .272 .353 .386 would be more than welcome on the 2007 Cubs.

Hill is out of options. Assuming he's the one leaving to make room, he'll be going to a different organization. Maybe he would. But the Cubs aren't exactly loaded at catcher, so he could still look at them as one of his better opportunities to make a big league roster. This is very intriguing. I'd be surprised if they called up Soto right now, only because it took so long in the first place.

They might as well trade him for something, since they aren't going to play him.

They tried to move him last year. They've been trying to get out of that contract for a while, while at the same time getting some young talent. It is highly unlikely that they will be able to trade Griffey and his contract straight up for good young talent. Something will have to be done with the money, either them picking up part of it, or taking back somebody who makes less, but still a signficant amount.

Obviously they will have zero interest in those guys. That's not the point. Teams often take back other team's problems they have zero interest in to fascilitate a trade. There isn't exactly a huge market for Griffey, and if he's truly limiting his potential destinations, Cincy is going to have to be flexible if they are going to make any sort of deal. If they are interested in trading Griffey for prospects, I'm sure they consider trading Griffey for prospects plus a bad contract. And with Jones at least having some power potential, I would think they would entertain the idea of bringing him to GABP.

That's not a bad line at all. Hopefully he's coming around. I will be more than ecstatic if I'm wrong and he makes it to big club as a starter. 1.60 WHIP. You can't complain about the 5 IP and 2 ER, or 10 ground ball outs. And the second half ERA of 2.81 is nice, but Samardzija is still playing with fire. I'm pretty sure he started out the year with a couple outings where the ER didn't exactly match up with what the WHIP and K rate would indicate. A sub 4 K rate while allowing that many baserunners isn't the least bit impressive. Strike out at least 5 per and maintain the ground ball outs without walking guys and maybe we'd have ourselves a prospect. That would be something more like 6 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 3 K, 1BB, 11 GO - 4 FO would be an impressive outing from him at this point. -
I have no issue with the yell, as playing sports for many years, I have yelled to distract in baseball, basketball, soccer, etc. The slap is pretty cheap and un-defendable however. Then you are bush league too. You don't do that, period. Yes, absolutely. All competitive sports should be played in complete silence, with neither side trying to do anything that would upset the delicate balance of competition. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ BUSH LEAGUER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

.185 .275 .287 with nobody on. .238 .272 .345 with RISP. .357 .375 .571 with bases loaded. .333 .364 .476 with man on second. He's also hitting leadoff on a team that is getting a 350 OBP out of the 9 hole. So, he's getting lucky with the timing of his hits and getting a lot more opportunities to hit with men on than he is providing the guys behind him.

When they refer to previous rankings, when was the 2007 list given? And why wouldn't Colvin have cracked the top 150 if he's able to be top 70 right now? I find it weird that Samardzija went from unranked going into the season to top 150 now, after this awful start to the 2007 season. Did they just not list anybody from the 2006 draft before this season? Or were they really that pleasantly surprised by Colvin's season? -
If Boston thinks Lugo needs a kick in the butt, trading for Izturis and taking on what amounts to a 1-1.5% jump in payroll for them could do the trick.

The Cubs are getting this line out of RF: .284/.354/.355 Griffey provides a tremendous improvement over that. Floyd has been better than that overall, but he's already been banged up in multiple body parts and can't be counted on for much. DeRosa's RF numbers are better than his overall numbers, but counting on that fluke would be absurd. Griffey in RF for 80-90% of the remaining games, with DeRosa subbing in here and there would provide far greater production than what they are getting, both in terms of OBP and SLG. It's not ideal. But so freaking what. Unless the Cubs get ARod for short, Posada for catcher or Ichiro for center, they aren't getting the ideal replacement anywhere else. Might as well do what they can to improve where possible. As long as they aren't giving up the farm for that improvement I'm all for it. If they want to give up the farm for Cabrera to play right, then I'd be fine with it.
