  1. It is to provide an easier target, so if one gets it, that doesn't mean you missed the other.
  2. I don't think you're understanding what a double cut is. Tell me, what is a double cut? A double cut is when both middle infielders go out and one of them receives the throw. For the play in question, DeRosa and Theriot both got into position to receive a throw from Murton, with some space between them. There's been a good deal of debate on the exact purpose in the thread, but the point is that one of them receives the throw from Murton. A double cut means Murton to DeRosa or Theriot to the plate, not Murton to DeRosa to Theriot to the plate. yeah you only need two cutoff men if Pierre and Jock Jones are involved in the play. But the whole notion that Murton missed a cutoff man in that situation is all wrong. There are two out there to make it easier for an OF making a tougher throw. He hit one. That's why they are two and why the notion that he did something wrong there is just asinine.
  3. Right, but isn't the real deficiency in how the team was built before the season? . Again, I'm not interested in letting Hendry's past failures be the excuse for not being able to fix them.
  4. If we're older and expensive, then we're trading good young talent to improve the team. That basically gives this team a one-year window to win a championship, and oh by the way there are a lot of other really good teams (a.k.a. American League) who we'd have to beat to win. If you don't do it, you've got an old team with no major-league ready prospects and you've just thrown a few more years into the crapper. Right. The playoffs are such a crapshoot too. Why not just make a team good enough to get into the playoffs for the next 3 years? We'd have a much better chance of winning that way then putting all of our eggs in one basket, imo. I think the playoffs crapshoot angle is overplayed. It's true that any team can get in. But it's still true that the better teams have a better chance of making it. I'd rather not just settle for trying to get in. I still think it's best to create the best team possible, regardless of division. Sure, the Cubs are lucky to have a relatively easy road to the playoffs, that doesn't mean they will definitely make it. Plus, the whole "contend within the division" theory didn't really work out well under MacPhail. I don't believe in setting goals that low. Set them for the highest, build the best team you can, and then see how it plays out.
  5. Somebody else wrote this in the other thread. There is something to stop us, it's called the waiver process. It's far more difficult to get anything good done in the waiver period. When was the last significant move made? Sure, Cubs/Mets made that "big" six man One Dog/Brian McRae deal a long time ago, but you were talking about a couple of also ran teams exchanging roster filler. I'm not going to say it won't happen, or it never has happened, but the odds that the Cubs can acquire anything that solves one of their 4 big holes during the waiver period are very slim. My opinion is this was a pretty good team, nowhere near great, but pretty good, with several glaring holes that could and should have been filled (yes, they could and should have been filled a long time ago, but Hendry's past failures can't be use to defend his current ones). I'm all about increasing your chances for success. That means creating the best damn team possible. Hendry has never come close to doing that, despite a tremendous amount of payroll throughout his tenure. Failure to acquire something big does not guarantee failure to win the Central, but it does mean they didn't improve their chances. And if you aren't improving your chances you aren't doing your job as a GM.
  6. You have that much faith in Cubs management that you believe the fact that something wasn't done is justification for it not having been done?
  7. The Cubs are 55-49, on a pace for just 85.7 wins. The offense is ranked 9th or worst in several key stats. Some of the pitchers who were outstanding early in the season have had a few hiccups of late. The team has a losing record to every good NL team besides Arizona and Milwaukee, suggesting they aren't exactly the best team in the league. The Cubs haven't won a pennant in 60 years or a WS in 98, and people are getting on fans for being pissed the team didn't do anything to get better this year. How can anybody expect Cubs fans to be happy with the status quo?
  8. That's not fair, you can't blame July 31, 2007 Jim Hendry responsible for the failures of 2004, 2005 and 2006 Jim Hendry.
  9. Why in the world would anyone ever do that? :D With the Cubs history, I don't see why anybody would begrudge a Cubs fan's right to prematurely assume failure.
  10. We have Kendall who is a veteran and has great career #'s..plus "brings it" every day. I'm not the least bit concerned. It's already been broughten.
  11. They sure do like their wife beaters in Philly.
  12. Just get on the Cubs bandwagon? We're getting Griffey...the announcement will be at 3:59 EST It doesn't have to be announced before the deadline. We didn't hear about Maddux being traded last year til about a half hour after the deadline passed. There was a heck of a lot of smoke before then though.
  13. Are you sure this was Rozner and not his favorite GM not working in baseball?
  14. Well, I'm not sure how it appears to you, but it seems pretty significant to me.
  15. Because the Cubs badly need to improve. Yes, there's always the fear that Hendry will make a bad trade. I'm not begging for a trade just to make a trade. I'm hoping any deal is made to make the team better.
  16. I'm pretty certain nothing significant will happen. But I also think there's a good chance Hendry will do "something", just not the type of something that will greatly impact the team.
  17. Just wanted to point out nothing has worked for JJ. .241/.308/.333 overall this season, .283/.370/.326 post all star break. .188/.350/.250 in his last 7 days. Jacque has been unproductive all year long. He had a nice little streak there where he drew a couple walks and found some holes for singles, but he has shown no power all year and has been a big drag on the team.
  18. In my opinion, that's horrible relief work. He's got a 1.55 WHIP and 7.45 ERA. He's got a 6/7 K/BB ratio in 9 2/3 innings. That's awful.
  19. He's had a mediocre career and is well past his prime and is having a horrible season. I don't see how any reasonable analysis could possibly assume Jones is going to suddenly come back to career norms, given the circumstances.
  20. Gagne, Wood, Dempster, Howry, Wuertz, and Marmol from the right side of the pen. Not to mention Petrick, who has been great when he's been up. And the various others who have shown flashes. Has there been a new Petrick added to the roster? The one who has pitched for the Cubs has been horrible, not great. Turn your auto a-hole response off. I know people have been picking on you in this thread but I have not. Oh yeah, and my point.....Petrick gave up 2 runs in his 1st outing (and made 1 pitch that was remotely bad) and 4 in his last outing. Other than that, he gave up 2 in 9 innings. Excuse me? Auto A-hole? I'm not going to apologize for pointing out Petrick has been far from great.
  21. When Marquis and Hill are pitching, its a pretty big need. Getting more than 5 innings out of them is becoming a real stretch. If you can't add a real impact in the OF, then I don't mind anymore. Almost changed my tune in 24 hours. Having a complete shutdown bullpen in the playoffs is a huge plus. Especially if we have to face Peavy and Young twice in a 5 game series. They already have 7 arms out there, and they've got another handful of guys rotating in and out in the minors. Gagne isn't going to hurt the team, and it's not that I'd mind him being here at all, but it's not that exciting for a team with good pitching and mediocre hitting, including 4 big holes in the lineup, to get a reliever. People are listing bullpen as number 1 on the list all over the place, and it's just not the true. If he falls in their lap fine. But Jim doesn't have a great history adding veteran bullpen arms.
