  1. Agree. The logical thing would be to get rid of Dempster next year, bring in a reliable set up guy and make Marmol and his 1.45 ERA and high strike out ratio the closer. I don't see a lot of logic in taking Marmol out of the more important 7th/8th inning role.
  2. I would, and I have. The divorce rate thing is meaningless, with all the other factors that go along with it. We actually lived in the same suite one year in college as well. But our junior and senior years we lived apart. We each got a place with a roommate post college, and lived like that for 3 years. Then she moved in, we bought another place 2 years later, got engaged a year after that and married the following year. So, I lived with my wife for about 4 years before the day we got married. Her family was 100% cool with it. My parents were fine, but we had to pretend otherwise with my GParents. Pretty much every single one of my married friends and close relatives lived together before marriage. I can see why somebody would want to not live together first, but it was the right choice for us, as we were very likely to get married, but just not quite ready for an actual marriage committment. I would recommend it, although I wouldn't recommend going straight from the parents house to living with a significant other.
  3. this is the equivalent of saying "i'm not a fan of signing free agent relievers" because if a good relief pitcher is getting offered 1 year by the cubs and 3 years by another team, he's going to take the deal that offers him more security. If you're going with that plan, you'd better have a hell of a minor league system that churns out one or two carlos marmols every year. Well yeah, you should be doing that anyway. Every team should be able to churn out a good reliever from their system on a regular basis. It's one thing to sign one guy, but when your bullpen is constantly stocked with guys on 3 year deals, you are taking a huge gamble. Unless you find yourself a truly reliable great reliever, there's no reason to do it.
  4. I'm not arguing he's not overpaid. I'm not a fan of multi year contracts for relievers. My point is he's been fine as the closer and all the angst regarding him being the closer right now is misguided.
  5. His ERA is over 4 in one of those seasons. I don't think he's worth 5.3. But he's here already and is the best candidate to close. Just watched the highlights of the 9th this morning. It's hard to get pissed at Dempster. The first guy hit an outside pitch the other way. The 2nd at bat should have been a double play, and at the very least, a fielders choice. The homerun was a pop-up that floated into the basket. There's really no reason for people to get all pissy about Dempster. He's far from great, but he's been fine this year, and he's been fine throughout the majority of his time on the Cubs. His cumulative ERA over the last four years is over 4 which is not good. No, it's not good, but it's also not nearly as meaningful as the individual seasons, in which 3 of 4 were good. Just like Jacque Jones and his last 4 seasons of 90, 99, 107 and 78 OPS+ aren't any good, even if the 2006 season was pretty good and props up the rest. If one season is the outlier, and great affects the average, it's less meaningful. DLee is probably a better example, at 114, 177, 111 and 126. His tenure as a Cub may be more like a 140 OPS+, but he's been nowhere near that most of the time.
  6. Actually, several of the Minor League Coordinators have spoken to Burke earlier in the season about spending some playing time at first base. Basically, it will allow him to get more at-bats. Seems like there are more outfield prospects than first basemen...He never played first base in Boise, but he worked out quite a bit there. He played first base all the way through his freshman year in high school, so he's got some experience there. I do however think that Burke is one of the better defensive outfielders - as far as athleticism and arm strength. BUT, he fits the physical profile of a first baseman better than the other OF prospects at 6'3", 210. But is there any hope that he'll hit enough to be a first baseman? I remember instructional league was when coaches pitched underhand to the kids and the "little pitcher" stood behind them.
  7. You know, he's not in control of that. There is a manager around. If taking a day off today means he'll play the rest of the way, I'll take it. A manager? Really, what's that? Don't talk to me like I'm an idiot. Come on, if Ramirez wanted to play badly enough today, he would've been in the lineup and you know it. Wow, how ridiculous. Ramirez has told Lou, and the press, on more than one occasion that he doesn't need anymore rest and he'll play everyday. Lou thinks otherwise. It's his call.

  9. That's about how I feel...I like Fonzie heating up...that could mean a lot...and while the offense sucked today...it was without Ramirez... (Btw...that's a pretty positive statment for you Goony.... :D ) I've been pretty positive about their chances for a couple months now. I'm still very down on Hendry and his methods, but I'll take a playoff run if I can get it.
  10. I agree, but if the offense scores 4 and the opposition scores 3, and we are in the 9th inning, whose job is it to get those last three outs? Dempster...... And with that, I am not very comfortable.... Are you? Would I prefer Putz? Yes. But I'm as comfortable with Dempster closing out a 1 run win as I am with just about anybody else doing their job on this team, outside of possibly Lilly throwing a quality start.
  11. The loss sucks, but it's hardly surprising the Cubs got their butts handed to them from another contender outside the NL central. Thankfully, they don't face anymore the rest of the year. They are still in position to back into the playoffs, and while it ain't sexy, it's all we've got for now. And I'm still feeling good about their chances.
  12. You're actually telling me you are comfortable with Dempster coming into the game with a 1 run lead in the 9th inning? Marmol is the closer of the future, why not put him in these situations now? Because he's more valuable in the situations he's normally used in.
  13. I want to know why you pitch out with Pierre at the freaking plate and Kendall catching. He's not going to throw anybody out, and there's no good reason to let Pierre get ahead 2-0.
  14. Is this coming as a surprise to anyone? That freaking team could sign Neifi Perez and Jose Macias and drag 100 OPS+ seasons out of both of them, complete with gold gloves. No they couldn't, and Ankiel isn't that big of surprise because we've known all along he could hit. He hit in the .260s in the minors. He is hititng in the .360s now. He hit a ton of homers. Fontenot OPSed over 1000 for a while as well. Theriot OPSed a lot over his norm last year.
  15. Is this coming as a surprise to anyone? That freaking team could sign Neifi Perez and Jose Macias and drag 100 OPS+ seasons out of both of them, complete with gold gloves. I really think that part of that is that they expect to win and the positive mental framing that goes with it. I highly doubt that.

  17. Glad to see Im not alone in my thinking. Yep cuz its his fault this gem will be wasted. 2 runs over 7 with the wind blowing out in Wrigley? Pretty good day. It's not about it being his fault. They are talking about taking Marquis out before he gives up the last out. I happen to disagree, but the way things worked they were right. I'll take 7 and 2 from Marquis everytime. Im sure we would all take 7 and 2 from Jason, and Im not blaming him if they lose this game, but Lou should have made a move. I'd rather not kill Marmol.
  18. And the subject of one of SNL's greatest skits. He was the CBS 2 anchor in the 80's and 90's. Hip hip hooray for Soriano.

  21. Has been all game...I have no idea why, after the first inning, we didn't make him throw more pitches... Yes you do.
  22. They kept hearing about how great he was last year and started to believe it.
  23. If not, he could be a substitute if someone has an "injury"...right? Doesn't Pagan's injury allow us to add another position player to the postseason roster? Or is that only if Pagan goes on the 60-day DL? Only if he's on the 60-day DL. No reason why he shouldn't go to the 60-man. He's not going to get back in time to be ready to play. His one skill would be pinch running, but Pie can do that.
  24. 1-0 cubs Thanks. What inning is it? The proper response to this question is: Nuthin 'nuthin. Whose winning? Da Bears.
  25. I would gladly sacrifice the opportunity for a personal accomplishment by Marquis for a guaranteed win. Guaranteed win? There's no way this game gets called early by the rain that's out there. It would be a delay at the most, which would likely result in Marquis either getting out of whatever groove he may or may not be in, or the Cubs going to a reliever early.
