  1. I know Cedeno isn't a good bet to do anything more than 0-4. But even if you're just trying to clear Theriot's head, it's going to be worth it. He's been brutal for a while now.
  2. Who is on proper rest? Who is the opponent? Is this Game 162 and we need a win to tie and get to a 1 game playoff? Is this the 1 game playoff? Is this game 3 of the LDS and we're down 2-0? Is it game 5? Is this a case of "I'm going to be at the game tomorrow and I really want to see them win"? Need more data.
  3. I think what you want to know is what percentage of starts is worse than 6/3. Finding out what percentage is 6/3 or better doesn't really tell you anything about the 6/3. Anyway, I believe something like 51% of starts fail to qualify as "quality". The problem with that, however, is a start that goes 8/4 or 9/4 isn't considered quality, while 6/3 is. Likewise, 5/2 isn't quality either. Anyway, I'd say it's safe to say that about half of all starts, that includes everybody who starts a game, whether it's a reliever spot starting, a guy coming back from injury, or an ace, are better than the lowest possible "quality" outcome. And that doesn't really qualify as quality in my opinion.
  4. Making your boss look like a fool is a tough sell. I realize it's for the good of the team but this is a sticky situation imo. I don't see how skipping Trachsel makes Hendry look like a fool. Hendry makes Hendry look like a fool. Trachsel pitching makes Hendry look like a fool. Lou deciding he's seen enough of Mr. Experience makes Hendry look like the guy who hired the right manager. I can't argue with you there as I agree but....I'm just not sure how that would play. It doesn't have to play. I think people put far more stock into the "manager can't make that move unless he wants to embarrass his GM" theory. If Lou never uses Trachsel again, it would play as a manager knowing a pitcher isn't worth the starts.

Hendry makes Hendry look like a fool. Trachsel pitching makes Hendry look like a fool. Lou deciding he's seen enough of Mr. Experience makes Hendry look like the guy who hired the right manager. Can't Lou just come out and say something like "Trachsel gave us the innings we were looking for, blah blah blah, he did well in his role, blah blah." You know, totally lie about it and make Hendry look better......then move on and do what's best for the team. Basically I think that's what Lou is doing. He's skipping Trachsel's start next week. My guess is that Trachsel gets 2 more starts the rest of the year-one on Thursday, and one in the final week of the season. Well then he's not doing that at all. If Trachsel starts again, Lou isn't moving on and doing what's best for the team. If they are bumping guys up a day to adjust for the DH, then there's no need to start Trax as the 6th starter. The job would go to the most deserving candidate, which is clearly Marshall.
  6. It's not a question of whether you want to use Z in a big game. It's a question of how wise it is to give Z an extra day of rest, and then have him come back on short rest the next time out. Z struggles with too much rest, and he's never gone on 3 days. Yet the Cubs are willing too screw around on both ends of the debate. I also don't have a problem with Hendry wanting to tweak the rotation. The Cubs have a couple guys who don't have a big history of 200 quality innings. The problem is Hendry went with Steve Trachsel, who was absolutely pathetic most of this year and last. Trax sucks, and he has for a while. The Mets tried to get him out of their playoff roster, but injuries to Pedro and Duque forced them to give him starts, and he crapped the bed. Trax is old, but he doesn't have a lot of experience of success in a playoff run. He's absolutely the wrong guy for the job.

  8. I don't have a problem with K's, if they are accompanied by a fair amount of other things. The problem with Colvin isn't just that he strikes out a lot, or just that he doesn't walk, or just that he doesn't really produce a heck of a lot, it's that he's not especially productive and strikes out and doesn't walk at all. You can't seperate the K and BB and say his K's are acceptable and all he needs to work on is the walk. His K/BB together are a huge red flag. I'm fairly confident in him being able to make the majors and look like he has a clue. But the big red flags provide tremendous doubt that he'll ever be more than a decent average, weak OBP, mediocre SLG bottom of the order hitter.
  9. Well that equates to a 4.50 ERA and a good amount of pitchers do better than a 4.50 ERA. Not sure what you mean by "do better than the 6/3 QS".
  10. They're doing the Marlin thing. Win....trade your players....lose and get a couple of high picks and build the minors up and then win again. Who'd they trade? From the WS team, Iguchi, Rowand, Garcia, McCarthy, Duque, Cotts, Marte, and a good deal more since then as well. Not exactly like the Marlins have done it (CWS payroll has gone up and stayed up since winning), but a significant amount of turnover nonetheless.
  11. There is something to be said for not inserting Z into what will be a charged atmosphere here on Friday night. Let him pitch on Thursday in sleepy Houston. With all the energy of the rivalry and the Cards' last chance to stay in the race, I'm afraid Z will fizzle. It's sad when people are worried about putting Z into pressure situations. If he can't handle the cardinal series he shouldn't be pitching in the playoffs at all. It's silly. Z struggles on 5 days rest. He's too strong. Add in the hype of the series, and you are asking for trouble. It's one thing for him to pitch in a high intensity atmosphere, but to add on the added challenge of throwing off the rythm and having him too strong is needlessly reckless.

With all the energy of the rivalry and the Cards' last chance to stay in the race, I'm afraid Z will fizzle. At the same time, Z's numbers against the Cards are pretty fantastic. Getting him a start against them might help get him locked back in. He's just as good against HOU. And Z consistently struggles on 5 days rest. There's no good reason to take him off a regular 4 rest day rotation.
  13. He usually dominates them, so I guess that's the reason, but you are dead right. The Cubs need to win games, not worry about STL. This is all very short-sighted, and a bit panicky if you ask me. I see no reason to try and get Trachsel back out there as soon as possible, if anybody should be skipped, it's Mr. Experience. I hate shortening rest as a general rule. If somebody has consistently shown the ability to handle the 3 day rest thing, then do it all year long. But don't just decide in the middle of September you want to throw off everybody's schedule because you are too scared to let a younger pitcher throw. If there is any marginal difference between youth and experience, it is almost certainly offset by the difference between having your vets go on 4 and 3 days rest. And as far as I can tell, Zambrano has never started on 3 days rest, and Lilly has done it only once in his career.
  14. I think Soto definitely helped himself the most this year, as he pretty much earned a starting job in 2008 after going into 2007 as a questionable backup. Not sure if Pie still qualifies, but he'd probably be atop my list, as he outperformed my expectations. It's very difficult for me to determine any sort of top 3, given the lack of true top-line talent. I think there's a good group of mid-tier guys though. Colvin and Samardzija both disappointed me, even if the club probably was a bit overaggressive with their promotions. Colvin had some good numbers that will please many people, but his red flags are enormous. Veal was disappointing as well. All three, however, probably did enough to keep up hopes they can contribute in a positive way by 2009.
  15. What are you talking about? Trachsel's last start only looks good because Lou kept him in for the 6th. He had given up 3 runs in 5 innings, and the 1,2,3 6th inning is the only reason that 4.50 ERA/1.33 WHIP outing looks any good at all. but this is where it goes a little far. why does inning 'not matter' in a discussion about relief pitching, but it does matter in a discussion about starting pitching? I personally don't think the start was good period. the bottom qualifier for a 'QS' doesn't make the start good. but the bottom line is that he pitched six innings and allowed three runs and the bottom line is he went 1, 2, 3 in that inning. you can't pluck out a good inning and throw it away to cast the start as worse than it was, as I am sure you wouldn't let someone say 'throw out the fifth to declare it better than it was. What in the world are you talking about? Backtobanks said Trachsel's last outing was pretty good, but would have been very good if Lou didn't send him back out to try and get a win. Had he not gone out for that last inning, it would have been a 5 inning 3 ER game. As it stands, it was 6/3, which qualifies as "quality" but isn't all that good in my book. Where are you getting innings not mattering from? And what is going too far?
  16. The Cubs don't have an ace. Ted Lilly and Rich Hill have been the closest thing to one this year, although Zambrano is probably the only one on the staff who stands a chance of being an actual ace.
  17. They've been in a playoff hunt for months and have switched catchers more frequently than any position on the team. Lou doesn't seem to have problems switching catchers, it's specifically switching out experience for quality that gives him the willies.
  18. It's approaching Wrigley pretty quickly, hope they finish this one early. http://www.weather.com/outlook/recreation/boatandbeach/map/interactive/60613?from=36hour_map_large&zoom=7&interactiveMapLayer=radar
  19. It already IS nice. I just hope that we can put at least 3 or 4 other competent batters around him in the lineup. At least the blind squirrel Floyd managed to find a nut in the first and drive Lee in. It's been Lee, Soriano and Ramirez so far in September, and I'm not sure we stand much of a chance of getting much more out of anybody else, although DeRosa keeps getting on base.
  20. The thing is, those guys didn't really have to worry too much earlier in the year, and things went well. Then as the race tightened and the calender turned, Hendry, Lou and Larry start talking about that short leash and the kids have a couple bad games. Hill pitches poorly, and Lou says as much, Trax pitches poorly, and Lou talks about good stuff just missing location. Soto hits and fields, Kendall makes outs left and right and can't throw anybody out, and he's the stable presence they need. Some excuse it because everybody else in the game acts the same way, but that's no excuse for poor decision making.
  21. The Cubs will just put out some raw meat and wait for him to come back.
  22. I'm going to stick with not for now.

  24. What are you going to do next time?
