  1. Thanks Bruce. I still think it's strange that the focus all spring was on who would get the 3rd and 5th spots. It's just odd to think the 4 spot could be locked down with the 3rd spot up in the air. Theriot did nothing to lose his starting job, or leadoff spot this spring. But I have to wonder who bad he will have to be, and for how long, in the regular season to lose the job. I don't see the point of Soriano in the 2 spot. Is he really that less likely to run just by moving? Why not just tell him to run less in the first place? Fukudome's value is somewhat marginalized by being used primarily as protection for Ramirez. Aramis has never had much protection yet he's been fine without it. And Fukudome is the closest thing this team has to a top of the order hitter.
  2. I definitely think that was worth being called "a shot". The problem is if you let that be his only shot.
  3. Or why Lieber was signed in the first place If I were a betting man, and I am, I'd bet that Lou and Hendry think one of Marquis/Dempster is going to be gone before the trading deadline, and that Lieber is expected to be the "steady veteran" who steps in to take their place.
  4. I'm guessing Lieber is going to be slated to go on a moment's notice on the day Hill starts. I get the feeling Lou is going to have a quick trigger with Rich in the event he struggles.
  5. At the same time, the future of that position is pretty scary. As far as I know, there aren't any legit prospects in the pipeline at SS. If they get rid of Cedeno, or he busts, they are on a path of having to rely on Theriot for years to come. And that increases the odds that they will eventually feel forced to go after another Neifi/Cesar.
  6. While Felix Pie has really crushed the ball in the major leagues, right? So I guess it's safe to assume he'll be horrible, too? As I said in another post, when the Chicago Cubs start playing the Omaha Royals - let me know. Cedeno raked in the minor leagues - why isn't he starting in front of Theriot? His minor league stats suggest he should... your post makes my brain hurt The arrogance by many on this board makes mine hurt. Pie and Cedeno have better minor league numbers - therefore it will just automatically translate to success at the major league despite what their past performances have shown us. Good minor league numbers do not mean a guy will be a good major leaguer. But a young guy with good minor league numbers should be given a chance over an older player with both bad major league numbers and bad minor league numbers. It's one thing to not give Cedeno a chance over some average major league shortstop. The problem I have is he's not getting a chance over a horrible major league shortstop.
  7. I think that has more to do with the fact that he's a CF prospect on the Cubs than anything else. Pie has been a much better baseball player than Corey Patterson at every level of professional baseball (outside of low A), and has shown more or a willingness to be patient than Corey ever did. He'll never put up a .400 OBP, but I dont' think he's going to swing his way out of the major leagues either Saying the comparisons are valid does not insinuate one thinks they are the same player. Pie has many of the same flaws Patterson has. He's also had a different career path to date, and may wind up doing much more than Corey at the big league level.
  8. It's never to early to worry about a prospect. It's too early to give up on him. But the comparisons to Patterson have been valid for a few years now, the worries about a guy who strikes out a lot and does not walk much have been around for years, justifiably so. He's done more than enough to deserve a shot, a fairly significant one in fact.
  9. There are two things Lou keeps talking about that make no sense to me. 1) Felix Pie HAS to bat 8th. 2) The best use for Fukudome is as protection for Ramirez. Protection is a joke. But even if you do consider it when drawing up a lineup, why in the world is it given such high priority as it apparently is given with Fukudome. It's beyond absurd to me that the only 2 guys who seems to have a spot locked down are Theriot at leadoff and Pie at 8th.
  10. 1 lefty pitcher, 3 RH hitters, 3 balls in play, 3 softly hit balls on the ground. 1 Cub making an out on the basepaths. Some things never change.
  11. theriot dribbler to third, out cedeno bleeder up the middle for a single Derosa battling in a 2-2 count. I'm assuming if people want to know more, they can just turn on espn2
  12. Ugly lineup today. theriot cedeno derosa murton ward soto mcgehee pie
  13. That was some sort of option play with nobody covering the RB.
  14. Why don't you rush a little more Western Kentucky, you impatient jerks are going to ruin my perfect start to the day.
  15. I'm very annoyed at Davidson for being so bad at finishing on turnovers.
  16. Vitters: I have to be a little skeptical about somebody being able to make such a claim as a weight transfer being a fraction of a second early. And that's an incredibly disappointing report on Vitters.
  17. Weird, your profile says this is your 1st post. Another thing about breaking up lefties is the Cubs also have another lefty, Pie. And from time to time, they will have Ward, and if Patterson or Fontenot gets some playing time, those guys as well. I think the breaking up the lefties thing is completely overblown. But the Cubs always seem to focus on silly secondary issues.
  18. That can't be good for the ole' trade value.
  19. It's funny how little chance they have to make the playoffs despite a fairly good record, while the Bulls are just a hair outside and horrible. They aren't completely comparable, because of the overtime rules, and how they prop up many records. But it's been a fun season. It's nice that they've had so many sell-outs, and are moving in the right direction. But they still need to find more offense and stabilize the defense. And Khabi is still grossly overpaid. Yeah he just doesn't take the ice enough. He's been a walking injury since he got here, like Havlat. It's really the youngsters that make this team worth the investment of time & anguish. And that's a good thing. They can build from here, if they're smart. I haven't been able to say that about the Hawks in a long time. Even when he's been on the ice, Khabi hasn't come close to fulfilling what were probably overly enthusiastic expectations.
  20. Quickly? Hendry has been here since 94, and GM for 5 years. Right, but the green light to get the big pricey FA names seemingly only showed up in the last year or so. An organization this hapless suddenly deciding to spend big isn't the situation where I expect to see much being done that's thought out right away. What a bunch of nonsense. Hendry was given more than enough resources to field a great team every season he's been at the helm.
  21. Quickly? Hendry has been here since 94, and GM for 5 years.
  22. That only matters if there was some sort of rule that said they had to sign him in the first place. It was only Jim Hendry's incompetence that put him in a position where he felt so desperate to make the signing.
  23. Yeah, I don't see anybody talking end of times. Major hindrance is not sky is falling. It will be possible to field a winning team, just all that much more difficult.
  24. The injury means more than fewer SB, it means missed time, which has already happened and likely will continue to happen. Maybe. Or maybe not attempting to steal as many bases will help avoid significant DL time. Stealing wasn't what hurt him in the first place. He's in his early 30's and can't start a spring training at 100%. You can pretty much kiss good bye any thoughts of complete seasons going forward.
