  1. He just lost a game 2 days ago. Why can't an article be written about it? He's been bad. Marquis has been bad, not so bad that it's indefensible for him to have a job pitching in the major leagues, but bad enough to justify writing articles about how bad he's been. It's a 162 game season that requires stories to be written for 9 months. Soriano's poor showing is deserving of an article. The tears, well, that's another issue.
  2. He wasn't calling it just a game, a poster later wrote that it was just a game. Edmonds said, "There are a lot of things more important than just the game." Likewise, my buddy the lawyer said, "There are a lot of things more important than just this case." Somebody else may say, "There are a lot of things more important than just this report." There's a difference between dismissively calling your job "just a game" and saying there are more important things in the world than just your job. That is especially true for somebody who obviously is going to be retiring or switching careers within the next couple months.
  3. What happened between the ump and Gallagher in the middle of the game. After the inning, just before commercial, they showed Gallagher walking off the field when the ump apparently called him over. Len and Bob didn't seem to bring it up the next inning.
  4. No kidding. It bugs me that the tipping point for this is him losing a ball in the sun, something that can happen to any fielder out there. The St. Louis game was rough, and he definitely gave up on the faux-HR in Pittsburgh...he also had that crappy outing when Wood had one of his blown saves against the Brewers. Nothing to brag about, obviously, but I'm just not seeing this defensive butcher that people seem to be worried about. You can start listing off a few really bad instances. It's not just the sun. But the sun game directly blew a win, and it followed another bad play. Soriano's been bad out there, no reason to gloss over it.
  5. I'm not a big fan of throwing out the outlier games, your numbers are what they are. I was just pointing out that it's true that if you throw out his best games, his performance has been really bad. Soriano, as streaky as he is, has a couple ridiculous games, but a whole heck of a lot more bad games.
  6. Why does Edmonds have to stay around to preserve a battle between Pie and Hoffpauir? While I could see waiting to call Pie back up, there's no reason Edmonds has to stay around to make that happen. I'm just looking at what would happen instead of what could happen. If they cut Edmonds now, Pie doesn't get called up. Hoffpauir starts starting against right-handers. He hits enough for Lou to at least be satisfied with him. Not great, but not horrible either. Now Pie keeps working down in AAA, and gets hot. The Cubs either keep him down in AAA, or they bring him up to the majors and he serves as a defensive replacement for Hoffpauir and a spot starter. This continues until Hoffpauir totally tanks and loses the job, which could take quite a while. Sure, the Cubs could stray away from this formula, and let Pie come up and take the at-bats as soon as he's ready if Hoffpauir has been somewhat effective or not. History says they won't though, and I want Edmonds to stick around for another little while to save the Cubs from themselves. So you'd rather get god awful performance from Edmonds than mediocre performance from Hoffpauir? I think the far more likely scenario is, barring a fantastic performance by Micah, they will only want Fukudome in center for a handful of games, thus making the Hoffpauir in right experiment short lived.
  7. The greatest heckle I ever heard was in the Yankee Stadium bleachers (pre-alcohol ban) with Joe Carter playing for Toronto. The fans were all over him, his fat behind and marital status. A handful of eastern European tourists were thoroughly enjoying the evening, and one got into the act with, "Joe Carter, I've done things with your wife!"
  8. Do you really believe this trash? Wow. It's probably technically true. If you take away the back to back 2 HR games against Pittsburgh, and the 4-5 day against Arizona, his numbers probably are pretty bad. Rough estimate is .229/.286/.429.
  9. Did they really think that it wouldn't? People were calling the Score from the bleachers. Well, the problem is that whoever was telling the fans that they would be ejected for heckling Soriano was giving incorrect information. The rule always has been that you cannot yell profane things towards the field of play, no matter who is playing. We were simply given a heads up that since soriano is stinking it up so bad to be on the lookout because some people will be taking the heckling from acceptable heckling to profane heckling. Unfortunately, someone must have took that the wrong way - whether it be one of us or a fan, idk the situation because I was in right field on the day in question. Anyway, it's really not my place to make any kind of comment on the situation but I don't think I gave anything up there that I wouldn't have to any regular fan during the game. Anywho, take all that for what you will. But I can assure you there is no rule in place that heckling soriano gets you ejected. Then how is what was said in the paper untrue? To be honest i didn't read the article. But to the best of my knowledge what the paper said was that if you heckle soriano you are automatically ejected. That is simply false; first of all, there are very few things at wrigley that will result in an automatic ejection. Secondly, heckling soriano is just fine. Heckle all you want. You simply can not use profane language - which is no different than the rule is for any player - whether he be a cub or an opposing player. But I think the biggest fault of the article is the idea of the "automatic ejection." Even if someone was to shout towards the field "Soriano you %^&ing BUM," something that is obviously profane, he wouldn't be ejected. We would simply go to him, ask him not to use the profane language again, and that would be the end of it. I hope that was clear enough, because that's about as far as I feel comfortable going with an explanation; at least in the subject area of our method of operation. Sure, that will be the end of it. The quote I read referred to profanity and innappropriate comments, it didn't say heckling.
  10. I would hope that it wouldn't take 48 hours to make the first two picks. I don't know how long it will take, but I do know that from Friday night through Sunday afternoon at the earliest I'll be out and about. If my pick is on the clock by midday Friday, no problem. But if it's up at 5pm Friday, I won't be around a computer.

  12. I disagree, especially for the bolded part. Hendry thought he was getting a 40/40 guy who still had room to improve, because Hendry doesn't understand the concept of prime years and past your prime decline. Hendry thought he was getting a leadoff hitter who could justify his spot at leadoff with a bunch of stolen bases because Hendry had been looking for a base stealing leadoff hitter for years. He also thought he was getting a great athlete who was going to get better and better in LF over time. But if he was just a basestealer he wouldn't have commanded that kind of money. Even a basestealer + defensively good wouldn't have put the price in that league. It was the first '40' that made him ridiculously expensive. Where did I say he was just a basestealer? It was the 40/40 thing, the combination of speed and power, and what Hendry envisioned to be ever improving defense.

  14. I will be at a conference that Monday and Tuesday and won't have access to the site. Will Thursday, June 12th work? Sure, assuming the 24-hour rule is slightly flexible over the weekend. I assume I'd be about 3rd to pick.
  15. They'll probably trade off their contract year guys, flukey guys they can sell high on, and low floor/high ceiling types who haven't been producing for them. I don't think they'll trade off their big names and prospects. Delgado is the easiest name to pick on, but everybody knows he's done and they aren't going to get anything for him. Beltran is taking the brunt of the abuse from fans and media. It's starting to look a lot like the way Philly threw Abreu under the bus. He's treated the way Rozner treats Ramirez, the quiet, aloof, "non-leader" type. I could see them looking to trade Beltran. He has been the most outspoken on the Willie issue. He's hardly a ticket seller who would be needed to fill seats next year. The Mets are Wright and Reyes, but moreso Wright. He's the star, face of the franchise, future, etc. Wright, Reyes and Santana will be the guys who put butts in the seats and drive ratings, with Pedro as a potential added asset.

  17. On the other hand, the Stone situation involved replacable players with no future in the organization while this involves the highest paid and longest contracted player on the team.
  18. Until you get payed for it then it's your job. Isn't that a good attitude to have about any job? Not taking your work home with you, seperating business and personal life, etc? Most people would praise any other professional who took that sort of attitude toward their life.
  19. I disagree, especially for the bolded part. Hendry thought he was getting a 40/40 guy who still had room to improve, because Hendry doesn't understand the concept of prime years and past your prime decline. 20. Even Edmonds himself probably knows that he is done. But he's not stupid enough to retire as long as someone else is stupid enough to give him a job. Exactly, if he retires he doesn't get what is left of his 8 million! I know 8M would keep me in the game. But what if he doesn't officially retire, just no team gives him a job this year. He still gets his full salary, right? I wonder if anyone would pick him up if Hendry cut him. He's kind of like Mahoney in Police Academy, he can't quit because he'd lose his money (or, like Mahoney, go to jail), but he's trying to get himself fired (kicked out) so he doesn't have to such anymore.
  21. Felix? He's fast, but he's not a good basestealer.
  22. why, because he hasn't hit in a handful of games? trust me, he'll be gone soon and he won't have caused even a particle of the damage that any of the guys you named did. i've heard of meatball hate, but this is ridiculous. actually it's ridiculous to keep calling people "meatballs." you supported the signing of edmonds; time to take your medicine. i don't get it. i wasn't telling anyone that this was for sure an awesome signing. i was saying that it was, at worst, a pointless signing. but you've decided to put words in my mouth, apparently. i'll not deny that one of my favorite pastimes is ridiculing the poor slobs who hate edmonds not for his offensive decline, but for his past with the cardinals and because he's apparently gay. if you hate him for one these meatball reasons, you're a meatball and you belong with da superfans. that's all. You were dying to get Edmonds on this team.
  23. It looked to me like another ump not doing his job properly and trying to create trouble instead of diffuse it. Sutcliffe seemed to expect that sort of behavior out of Davidson.
  24. While I agree there are several less than pleasent issues involving Soriano, bringing up the idea of moving him to AAA is pointless.
  25. Why won't they be able to afford him? They may not want to pay what he'll get, but they would definitely have the ability to afford him.
