no doubt it's possible, especially with amateurs at sparsely attended and barely televised games, when signs are relayed from catcher to coach to pitcher. But pulling that off in a major league game would be much more difficult.

If they had a strong indication they could start by 9, I'd bet they'd try and start by 9. There's no guarantee they'd get a day/night DH in tomorrow anyway. going strictly by the storms that are currently visible on radar, it looks like it's all passed by Chicago, and they should get the game in no problem. Although I have no idea if conditions are ripe for storms to build. -
I don't think people were giving him a free pass, rather, they were discussing the decisions made late in the game. It wasn't a good outing.

While I wouldn't say it's impossible, I have a hard time understanding how this can go down. Teams mix up signs. Brenley has, on numerous occasions, watched the signs being given, said what he thought was coming, and been wrong.

so anybody can be drafted and you will hold their rights no matter how long before they are entered onto database? This is a fantastic way to get around the 10 minor league roster spots, I applaud your shenanigans.

If they'd send him to Iowa (if they can) to stretch him out, I wouldn't at all mind seeing him as the long man out of the pen, provided the keep him as the long man this time and not as a LOOGY. say what? I said, I wouldn't mind seeing Lieber as the long man out of the pen. That just makes me even more confused. Lieber is the long man right now. Both Lieber and Marshall are already stretched out enough to be the long man. So who are you sending to Iowa to get stretched out? And if you were talking about Lieber as the long man, why did you mention not making him a LOOGY again when that was Marshall? And why would you mention Lieber having to become the long man when he already is? And if you were talking about Marshall, why were you worried about either his ability to be sent down (considering he just came up yesterday) or how much he's stretched out, considering he just started yesterday? I'm honestly not trying to be picky. I'm just trying to understand what you meant. Yeah, what he said.

It's Jon. And I forgot he was still on the team. Didn't watch the game last night? I was making a sarastic reference to the fact that he's thrown just 5 times in June, and twice in the last 14 days.

He's done what he had to do. The first month he was huge for us because the starting rotation was still finding its legs. The last month and a half, the starting rotation has been great for us, and the long man hasn't been needed very much. Lieber cannot really be used as any other role out of the bullpen consistently because of his huge splits. He's one of the least overall needed guys on the team, but he's a nice insurance policy back there. I actually thought it could have been a good idea to start the 5th with him on the mound. 4 IP 2 ER might have been as good as one could have hoped for from Marshall, and I like the idea of piggybacking with some of the fringe guys in the rotation and long relief.

I know, I was listening to the radio and when I heard Pat say "Blanco will be pinch hitting" I was like.......crap, game over man. I assume that was a last second change in plans by Lou. Henry doesn't have strong splits against lefties, and he really never has. I think he saw 3 righties get on base and 1 lefty look foolish so he made the move. If Kosuke's at bat went a little different, I bet Patterson gets a chance to make a play.

Would you give Dempster 4 years, $56 million to keep him?

I had a moderately good feeling about Dempster, in that I thought he might be able to put up decent #3-4 starter numbers. He's been much better obviously. But the question is going to be durability. Can he thrown 200 innings this year, and then can he comes back and throw 200 next? I say either go for broke with him and then let him walk, or be slightly conservative and limit his innings down the stretch while talking to him about an extension. The Cubs are going to need arms next year, and even if they let him go, they are likely to go after another Marquis type pitcher spending $7-10m per on some mediocre starter. Dempster has shown, to do, that he's capable of more than mediocre. And he's been a good soldier. I'd strongly consider bringing him back, if he makes it through this year healthy, and still effective. -
I didn't question the Murton move, it was the right one. The closer dominates lefties and Edmonds sucks vs lefties. It was the best hope to make something happen, and at the very least Murton nearly drew a walk.

Putting the ball in play isn't the goal there. Brenly was begging for him to strikeout to limit the damage. I think he went up with a swing hard in case you hit it attitude. But his eye was horrible. A groundout would be even worse than the K, and the only fly ball that scores a run is a very deep one with pudgey on third. Had he not swung at all he would have been better off.

option years, not times. Murton has been optioned 1 this year already. Doesnt that mean if they want to send him down, theyd have to DFA him, and hope he doesnt make it through waivers, which he wouldnt? And Ronny hasnt been Optioned yet this year, hint hint. Is Cedeno out of options? Did he have to clear waivers when he started the season in AAA (or am I dreaming and he didn't start out in AAA)? I'm fairly certain he is out of options and has not spent any time in AAA this year.

When he can only play in LF with below average defense, it's close to that. Not really. AAAA guys can't hack it in the majors. Murton can, and has. He's no all-star, but he's a perfectly capable major league contributor.

I kind of like Fontenot as well. But Patterson is probably a better candidate for that specific job. Fontenot does enough to warrent a spot on a big league roster, but not anymore than Patterson can do. -
Missed 24hr cutoff Mighty D Block on the clock... Is this like the NFL draft, where if you miss your spot, other teams can go ahead but you can then put in your pick as soon as you get your chance? I was out of town for a while.

I don't know if we can just peg Lieber into a start. He's only pitched 2 innings or more once since May 2nd. I doubt he's stretched out to go more than 3-4 innings. In fact, he's only pitched 3 times this month total. I think Marshall would be the better choice. Old dudes have pulled that off before. If it was a kid I'd be worried, but Lieber should be able to got 5+ on a moment's notice. -
other countries always allowed their pros. I don't watch the basketball but I would find it difficult to actually root against them.

he also walks a ton. if only j.p. ricciardi were as smart as a lot of people think he is... the jays might actually have a good team. I thought that Ricciardi valued high obp type players. I guess not. High OBP players with a passion for the game. I think he values underappreciated players. OBP, and Adam Dunn are not exactly under appreciated, or underpaid anymore.

I was particularly fond of one name on the overpaid list... Derek Jeter Warner Wolf, an olde tymey sports anchor in NY known for "Let's go to the videotape", does little NY-centric monologues during Mike and Mike in the morning in the NY market. This morning he was referencing an SI poll that labeled Jeter as the most overrated player in the game. He then insinuated it must be jealousy because Jeter and the others on the list are among the highest paid players. A lot of fans have actually learned to understand that Jeter is overpaid and overrated, but large portions of the NY media still worship the ground the man walks on.
