  1. The problem is that there is judging at all.
  2. Manny's obviously a better offensive player than Dunn, but is it really fair to compare the two? Manny's career OPS is .101 higher than Dunn's, and his 2008 OPS is .071 higher. On top of that, do you really want to label Manny as a contact hitter? He's been over 100 strikeouts 10 times in his career. While he may not strikeout as often as Dunn, it's not like Pujols who only Ks about 60 times a season. But it's ok to compare the Neifi guys with Dunn who hit "weakly" to the pitcher? Manny swings hard and hits the ball hard and that is what has been said about Dunn. I'd rather have Manny then Dunn. Because his production is higher. Manny has been better than Dunn, no question. But it is not becuase he strikes out less. Dunn is better than most everybody, with the exception of players like Manny. But this is pointless in the discussion about strikeouts.
  3. You're comparing team wins with pitching wins. One matters, one doesn't. The W-L record for a pitcher (bad stat) by itself does nothing to indicate how likely a team is to win or lose (very important stat) when he takes the mound for them. When Harden and his 1-1 record take the mound tonight, I think he gives the Cubs better than a 50-50 shot of winning. Welcome to the forum. What does that matter? When a 1-1 team takes the field that does nothing to indicate how likely a team is to win or lose. I believe the record matters. While it's possible a mediocre pitcher could go 20-2 in a season, it's not very likely. Records by themselves don't define a pitcher, and they are a bad way to compare one pitcher to another, especially on seperate teams. But they still matter.
  4. I'm sure some people realized the issues, but conventional baseball wisdom still, to this day puts far too much emphasis on pitcher wins. My biggest issue with it has more to do with the fact that they refer to win totals a lot more than record. An 18-15 season is more impressive than a 10-2 season because an 18 is greater than 10. As for point 2, I would agree. I don't get all the whining about "casual fans". I get annoyed at casual fans who go on and on about conventional nonsense they know is true because they heard it on the radio. But I don't see how anybody can get upset with a person who buys a ticket to enjoy a day at the ballpark and isn't all that in tune with the stats many others find fascinating. On that note, a huge pet peeve of mine is the notion of "true fans". Get over yourself.
  5. Honestly this is something I've gotten onto right now. I'm of the opinion errors should be abolished completely and any time a hitter puts a ball into play and reaches base safely it is a 'hit' and helps your on base percentage. Errors were a nice idea on paper but now it ruins everything, there are plenty times a ball is an 'error' because the man is hustling down the line and forces someone to make a hurried throw, or an error is a 'hit' because a fielder can't get to it. There are basically no good consistent criteria for the difference between hits and errors. Its stupid, antiquated, terrible, much like many traditional stats. Similarly, why should someone get rewarded for getting a 'base hit' and getting thrown out at second? You are making outs, those are bad. Really? It's extremely rare that a ball a fielder can't get to is called an error. I can't remember a single time when a shortstop knocking down a ball in the hole was given an error if he didn't field it cleanly. I think there are some issues with the stat and how "official scorers" are allowed to fudge a bit, but by and large it's a pretty accurate description of a play that should be made not being made properly.
  6. Yes he is still on the Hawks. About being 100%... I'm not even going to venture a guess on whether he is 100%, you can never tell with him. I'm pretty sure the Hawks aren't counting on him for much this season even if he is 100% Is he considered soft? Man I wish Daze could have stayed healthy. I don't think so. He gets hurt too often on the ice, but I don't think he's viewed as somebody who fakes injury or anything.
  7. Why lump Vitters in with Harvey and Dope? Vitters is batting three-thirty or three-forty something right now. He's 18 hitting over .300 in short season ball...give him a break. The post was written in early June, when Vitters had yet to do anything, I believe.
  8. a player who whines if he isn't starting every day, and who isn't nearly good enough to start everyday would be annoying to deal with.
  9. Sure, unless you're striking out on a pitch headed for the backstop, not much good comes from a K, since the pitcher isn't depending on anyone else to get you out. But it is still just one out. Yes, but if you put the ball in play, you have a chance of the defense messing up, and therefore something good happening out of it. The chances are slim, yes, but they're a hell of a lot better than if you strike out. so what? The rates that he produces at tells us what he produces, which is good, much better than the vast majority. It does not matter what could happen if he didn't strike out, what matters is what does happen. And what happens when Adam Dunn comes to the plate is a more than acceptable rate of success. The fascination with the strike out is so obnoxious.
  10. Only if they say that Dunn is a bad player because of it; which I don't think anybody has said. I don't think anyone has suggested Dunn should change his approach - at this point his game is what it is. He hits a ton of home runs and walks a lot which are fantastic. He strikes out a lot and is a terrible defender which is bad. The good outweighs the bad at this point and he is a very productive player - but that doesn't change the fact that SO's are bad and should not simply be dismissed, especially in the quantities in which Dunn accumulates them. wrong dead wrong absolutely positively wrong no where near correct, rather, you are wrong

  12. Doesn't look promising. :| I could live with a 2 hour delay and then a chance for Harden to go 5 innings uninterupted.
  13. Speaking of the next Cubs/Nats game, any update on those tix? 3x face. Actually, I haven't gotten a final head count for who is going, so I'm not sure if I have extras or not.
  14. That's so weird. I've never heard people say Hockey sucks. I've only heard "I'm a hockey fan" or "Meh, the Blackhawks are never good/Wirtz is horrible/etc" Lots of people say hockey sucks.
  15. So what will tickets go for in the VWR? Face value But will they jack up the 'face value' price? Or will it be the same price as the whatever regular season game against whatever team? Seriously? Yes, it'll definitely be higher than regular season prices. So then the term 'face value' really doesn't hold much water, per say. Face value means the price of the ticket as purchased from whatever entity is hosting the game/show/etc. No matter what the face value of Wrigley Field playoff tickets becomes, the value on the secondary market is going to be higher. Right, I know what the definition of face value is. But to say 'face value' to the bolded question really gives me no information, hence the 2nd question (in italics), followed by the SB comment. There isn't any information. The ticket prices haven't been announced, but you can bet they will be a heck of a lot higher than the next Cubs/Nationals game.
  16. aren't there rules regarding this? Apparently, she was eligible because she is a Russian citizen (gained while she was playing there) and has never represented the U.S. in international play. I think it's ridiculous, personally. Yeah, Jim Caple insinuates that the only people who can have a problem with this are people hung up on the Cold War. I think it's really odd that somebody can compete for a country simply because they played some pro ball there. I wouldn't expect any of the Russian women to represent the US in tennis, or Lance Armstrong to ride for the French. It's kind of silly if you ask me. It's one thing to be born in one country, and then move to and become a citizen of another country and represent them. And I also don't think it's the same as coaches working for players/teams from another country.

It'll be interesting to see wha they'd do with CBOE auction seats. Do the people who won those auctions get those seats, or is there a new auction? Those could be $5000 apiece face.
  19. Can someone actually provide stats on our run production vs. pitchers we haven't seen before. i have a feeling everyone who believes what soul just wrote has been educated by Joe Morgan. I could be wrong though. I'm not sure about the actual data, but he did say it "seems" like. Insinuating that this is akin to Morgan type thinking is inaccurate. Morgan would say "definitely" and if you provided him with numbers showing the opposite, he would say those numbers don't matter. To me it does seem like that has been the case in recent years. If somebody showed me something that said otherwise, I'd believe 'em. Seems can be a dangerous word. But as long as you don't take what seems to be true as gospel, there's nothing wrong with pointing those things out.
  20. How does a city hate another city? This doesn't make sense to me. Chicago and NY have always had a huge rivalry in many things, financial markets, architecture, art/museums, sporting teams, etc. Paris and Berlin had a pretty big rivalry a few years back. A city isn't just the land it occupies. It's the people and attitudes that shape it, and history is littered with cities that hated one another.
  21. .270/.403/.545 Thanks Jersey...Not bad. So he's making something good happen 40% of the time, is this a big difference over the average of all players in this situation? I really don't know, but I'm going to assume the average player hits similar to what the average player hits overall, in that situation, something like a 260/332/415 line.
  22. Are we sure the scout isn't some whitebred suburban guy who simply can't tell the different Korean players apart?
  23. yes. we're not talking about sox fans here is there any chance Sox fans won't do that stuff, just to make Cubs fans look bad, or because they are pissed? This sort of stuff is going to happen. Hopefully it's isolated and minimal, but it's a mistake to think Cubs fans are above bad behavior.
  24. Was I the only one who cringed when he read multiple Harden is a great articles this morning?
