  1. He is probably the biggest difference between last year's team and this, bringing the Cubs catching production from bottom of the barrel to top 2-3 in the league. But I don't think that's enough to make him MVP. Although he's hardly a bad choice.
  2. right. and those guys aren't as valuable as players who are "sluggers." i hear this "well, that's just not the type of hitter he is" arguments about theriot quite a bit. so does that mean you just don't consider his .367 SLG or whatever? hey, jason marquis just isn't the type of pitcher that strikes guys out, limits hits, or prevents runs. when you accept that he's just not the type of pitcher, you'll like him a lot better. I'm not saying that a singles hitter is as valuable as a slugger, but I do think that Theriot plays an important role on this team and shouldn't be overlooked because his slugging percentage is low. 20 years ago an overwhelming percentage of middle infielders were singles hitters and many of them were considered valuable members of the team. This isn't 20 years ago. Now you have to bring something with the bat. Theriot brings something, but not much, which, along with his "good enough" defense doesn't come close to making him top 5 MVP candidate. You can't list a guy as MVP just because you think he's an underappreciated role player. Nor can you list Edmonds/Johnson as MVP because they combine to be very good. Theriot has been a nice role player this year, which is a big improvement over last year. But that's not MVP in any way shape or form.
  3. My only concern is health. They are very good, balanced and deep.
  4. take it where you can get it
  5. no you weren't. We aren't asking him to run out a single. We're asking him to not turn a double into a single. This isn't a case of a guy thinking he had a HR and making it close at 2nd, nor is it a guy failing to bust out of the box on a routine grounder or pop fly. It was a sure stand-up double and he wasn't even on first base yet when the OFer grabbed the ball. People apparently don't even know what happened.
  6. I think they would have removed Soto quite a while before that if they were going to start him. Yeah, Blanco playing late was probably a way to get him an at bat before the 2nd game.
  7. I'm thinking they don't want to use Marshall today in order to get him on schedule for Sunday. Probably an inning or 2 on his normal throw on the side day Marshall was getting warm in the 4th. I don't think they plan on resting him through Sunday. If the throws a couple innings today, that will have absolutely no effect on whether he can bounce back and pitch a few innings Sunday. As things stand right now, some sort of Marshall/Samardzija piggy back sounds like the most reasonable plan for Sunday. I would start Marshall and try to get 4 strong out of him, then try and get 2-3 strong out of Samardzija.
  8. 5th on the team in games played. The other two points are worthless. We're talking about ranking MVPs, not whether a guy should be on a team. His defense should not be listed as a reason to defend ranking top 5 in MVP, neither should his production. For those who want him ahead of Ramirez. Ramirez plays just as much, is a better defender, and when you rank the Cubs positions against the league, they are 3rd at third and 7th at SS. I would put Dempster, Zambrano, Ramirez, Soto, DeRosa, Soriano ahead of Theriot without batting an eye. Edmonds hasn't been around long enough to warrent such a high ranking, but he competes with Theriot for honorable mention.
  9. I'm hoping for 6 innings at 95 pitches with 2 or fewer runs, the Marshall for 2 and Wood for 1, with the Cubs scoring 5.
  10. I hope they don't. It would be very dumb to waste a pitcher who is going to to get thrown out in a DH day when arms are needed. Nothing is gained from "protecting" Soriano by throwing at somebody else. Wait until tomorrow if need be.
  11. This is a stupid question. First off, I have no idea. He's done similar things multiple times. But why does it only matter if it happens in October? What if it actually does cost them a game that affects the date they clinch and forces them to use pitchers they wanted to rest. Anybody getting on Brenly is being absolutely ridiculous. This is about as meaningful to me as Aram hustling. They were up 8-2. In my opinion the reaction to Soriano was pretty stupid. IF it was a close game, I'd be more concerned. My reaction was to the idiotic bashing of Brenly more than Soriano. Soriano was wrong, Brenly was right. People blasting Brenly are being ridiculous.
  12. It might not be a popular choice, but I would think Theriot needs to be in the top 5. He has been consistently good all year while playing every day, unlike Soriano, Soto, and Edmunds. I could not agree more. When I saw the list of the original 5, my first thought was that Theriot was not there. He does play every day and his defense is good. He's often and unsung hero, not a lot of flash, but I don't think the Cubs are where they are without him. He doesn't play everyday, his defense isn't that good, and he's only marginally productive.
  13. I always thought it was weird how casually he spoke about Harry after he died, but he had the same tone talking about his dad. He's like a robot or something. A very dorky robot.

  15. I like that the announcer believes if you are going to wave the W you should be willing to wave the L if they lose game 2. Idiot.
  16. It's a big enough deal that Brenly is more than justified in criticizing Soriano. Not big enough to carry on all week. And as a side note, it was big enough to get Atlanta to throw at his head,
  17. He's pointed out some stupid Theriot stuff. cubinny, you aren't making any sense. Soriano didn't think he hit a HR and end up with a double. He thought he hit a HR and ended up with a double. It's not a little thing. Soriano has multiple times watched doubles and ended up having to slide into what should have been a stand-up double. This was different, he didn't even get to 2nd. It is a big deal, and it is absolutely ridiculous that people are downplaying and acting like Bob is in the wrong for complaining. how is it a big deal? He walked to first base when he should have been standing on 2nd. I'm not one to get overly critical on hustle, but this was bad.
  18. Peachtree pointed out that Soriano apologized to Lou after the inning and Lou nodded acceptance of the apology. It is not a big deal in the sense that it should be a story that lasts the rest of the year. But it was a big enough mistake that Brenly was more than right in criticizing Soriano. It was really bad.

  20. Bob's a dick. He's all about that old school nonsense. I wouldn't call him a dick, but he does lay into Cubs players a little too much at times. Especially players that have such a huge impact on how well we play... Oh please. He lays into guys who do stupid/lazy things.
  21. Bob's a dick. He's all about that old school nonsense. I'd have taken some of that old school nonsense just there. Sometimes he's right. Yeah, Brenly is right if that's what he said. Soriano deserves to get ripped.
  22. It probably means he's unavailable Thursday, Friday and Saturday, which would make it even more likely he starts Sunday. 3 days rest if he only throws 40-50 pitches is no big deal. Piggyback him with Marshall and you have two guys who should combine for 100 quality pitches on Sunday without extending them beyond their capabilities. Soriano, you idiot.
  23. Might not need one. If things work out as planned, you can go with Shark the rest of this game, then Harden/Marshall/Wood or Marmol. Then tomorrow you have Gaudin/Howry/Cotts/Wood or Marmol fresh. You might see a Samardzija/Marshall piggyback on Sunday.
