  1. you can still get directv, beer, steak and sex (I assume) in ND, right?
  2. Very similar thing, minus the gunshot, happened in my driveway. Stupid cops.
  3. it's really not a big deal. average temps in early april are around 50 for a high and 30 for a low, and by the end of the month the average high is up to 65. by that point of the year there's not much difference between the climate there and the climate in chicago, detroit or cleveland. they'll probably get a couple of "cold outs" or "snow outs" in a year, but i would guess that from beginning to end of the season, you'll get more rain outs in an open air stadium in, say, miami, boston or new york than you will in minneapolis. How's their late October?
  4. That article annoyed me. He took a long time to say nothing except "A Peavy deal would be complicated"....No kidding??? That's the Fred Mitchell way.
  5. errors aren't going to tell us anything.
  6. not even close. lowe is much better than garland. Yes Lowe is a much better pitcher than Garland.....did you mean no even close Lowe is much more expensive than Garland? I said I could be wrong on Garland asking for not so much money....I've been a huge supporter of Lowe there's not question he's much much better than Garland What they are asking for isn't really the issue. Like the housing market, there's still far more supply than demand. That tends to drive down prices. He might get what he wants, but there is no guarantee. He could refuse to pitch for $5m, but unlike with a house, where deciding not to sell is a realistic choice, deciding not to pitch for a year until prices rise is pretty stupid. I don't know what he'll get. I do believe some guys are going to get a lot less than they expected. And those guys aren't going to want to sign longterm at the lower prices, so 1 year $5m is probably out there for some mediocre arms, like Garland.
  7. not even close. lowe is much better than garland. Garland's success always seemed like a mirage to me. He didn't strike guys out and was susceptible to the long ball. I don't think he had a fantastic ground ball rate either. He just pitcher 210 innings a year and relied on his defense to make plays. His career ERA+ is just over 100, and he's had one truly good season (only WHIP under 1.3 and only ERA+ over 112). Every other seasons was more or less just below or above average. He's basically Marquis with fewer walks.
  8. Garland was the name that popped into my head earlier when I was wondering about the 5th starter spot after Marquis deal became official.
  9. I've never really enjoyed them. The only thing I liked as a kid was watching when a Cub got an at bat, but I rarely watched even those. The whole heaping of praise on guys who already get praised and worshipped daily thing just doesn't do it for me (ASG, Halls of Fame, Awards, etc).
  10. It'd be great if you tried to prove your theory by comparing Pods to actual good players. Buckner was not one of them. Plus, Buckner had an OPS+ well over 100 on plenty of occasions, and his career numbers were weighed down by his long career. Pods had one good year and then stunk since 2003.
  11. I don't know how anyone could still argue that trading Lee for Pods was a good move. Homeruns kill rallies.
  12. He sees NY paying big for all these other pitchers, and he wants in. Playing hard to get has worked before.
  13. Well the fact that they said it was only a 'contaminant' level of the andro that they found in his blood stream sure helps his believability. At least to me. In Romero's case, he brought the bottle he used to his arbitration hearing. I guess you can also look at credit card records in both cases, if that is indeed how they paid for the supplement. How does bringing the bottle he used prove that's all he used?
  14. If rodent hair could cause you to lose your job, you should eat something besides popcorn. That's not really an analogous situation with Romero though. What if you were had no idea popcorn could contain rodent hairs, nothing on the popcorn label says anything about rodent hairs, and even when you asked a professional, that professional tells you it doesn't contain rodent hairs? Would you be confident eating popcorn? If you are a pro athlete and have no idea that GNC products can contain stuff that is not on the label, you are an idiot. Everybody with a pulse knows that. It's been reported for several years. This same story is written every month with a new player involved. Olympians, bike racers, football players, futbol players, baseball players.
  15. http://www.post-trib.com/sports/1365563,bears.article Guys have gotten as close as they can get to asking for Babich's head, constantly questioning tactics, etc. Personally, I'd like to see them consider the 3-4 going forward. They're two best defensive players are linebackers Urlacher and Briggs, and Urlacher just isn't ideal for what they are doing.
  16. Haugh is a hack. I cant think of another sports journalist who tries to use so many psuedo-witty analogies. His articles are hard to read, and his logic even harder to understand He demanded an extension for Orton around week 5 or 6.
  17. Huh? Peavy isn't a free agent, what does his agent have to do with whether the Cubs can get him? And Sheets is a free agent, so Brewers wouldn't exactly be giving him to the Cubs. I could be wrong, but isn't a player's agent still heavily involved in trade talks? You're right about Sheets, but it would be a huge slap in the face to Brewers fans if he went to the Cubs. To the extent that Peavy has a no-trade, his agent will talk to the owners. But Axelrod has already been pushing for him to go to the Cubs and had nothing to do with the Padres high demands.
  18. Hendry sounds committed to keeping him as swingman.
  19. Huh? Peavy isn't a free agent, what does his agent have to do with whether the Cubs can get him? And Sheets is a free agent, so Brewers wouldn't exactly be giving him to the Cubs.
  20. I think they need to update post December 15. That has Bears at 14, aren't they 18?
  21. I know I'm being optimistic, but maybe he just didn't want to play there? Or, more likely, he's insulted that he'd be offered so little when everybody else is getting the motherload.
  22. Way to be THAT guy debbie downer. you show hitler being pissed about the cubs offseason and I'm the downer?
  23. In general, it can be perceived as difficult to demote coaches and expect players to maintain their respect for that guy. It's hard to get these guys to accept demotions. In this case, Lovie probaly wouldn't want to embarrass his BFF.
  24. The Cowardly Bears story continues. From the absurd punts inside opponents territory when the team desperately needed to score, to the GM laying the blame almost entirely on the QB position despite total lack of talent anywhere else on offense, to everybody's job being in danger except for the boss man and the guys making the most money. This is pretty disgusting. LB and DB coaches are taking the blame while Lovie's BFF gets to stay on and continue the leadership of a declining defense. So far I've seen no evidence that Lovie's authority has dwindled in the least, and that's incredibly disappointing. The team has gotten worse since the super bowl, and the guys most responsible - Lovie, Turner, Babich and Angelo - are going to keep their jobs while their underlings take the hits. Hilarious that Lovie had no problems firing the DC that was actually good, but we can't get rid of dear old Bob Babich. I'm less and less sold on Lovie as a coach by the day. Lovie shows a lot of Bush like leadership. Stick with your beliefs no matter the results, and reward loyal friends at all costs. The ones pushed out the door are those who may have different opinions.
