  1. I'm not familiar with the rule, but the announcers sure made it clear that it was legit. What was Sharp doing standing around like that after the whistle?
  2. Their highest pick was Benson, and he was the 3rd RB taken in the top 4. It's never a good sign to pick at the end of a run at any one position. Regardless, Angelo's crew hasn't been here 10 years. His picks have been mostly bottom 3rd (Columbo, Grossman, Olsen, Manning-traded out of first), or middle third (Williams, Harris, Haynes). They've had one top 10 pick. I see no reason to assume they can't pick a good player in the top half of the first.
  3. Is he wearing a really gaudy bracelet and a rubber band?
  4. With all the talk about how horrible higher picks are nowadays, and how nobody wants to trade up and everybody wants to trade down, I think a shrewd NFL GM should be able to make a great deal moving up to get the guy he wants this year. That's a good point. Though trading up involves losing picks, which the Bears can't afford to do. You can also trade players. Angelo seems to know how to maneuver up in the 2nd/3rd/4th rounds, if he finds the right player and right trading partner, I could see trading up in the 1st, then moving back in the later rounds to maintain the same number of picks overall, or close to it. Hey, it's not like they have been spot on with their 2nd and 3rd rounders. I'd much rather trade up for a stud in round one than end up with a Bazuin or Wolfe later. Cause our first round picks the last...how many years...have been good? And......? Yeah, they've struggled with first round picks. Perhaps that's because they've traded down all the time. Maybe they'd be better if they traded up to get the elite guys.
  5. How so? They got rid of a valuable versatile bat and replaced the versatility with Aaron Miles. What he said gave no indication that he forgot about Fontenot. Because most of DeRosa AB's are going to go to Fontenot, Bradley, Hoffpauir, Johnson and Soriano. He makes it sound like were replacing DeRosa with Aaron Miles. They are replacing DeRosa with Miles. Accounting for who is taking whose at bats is pointless. Miles will get a lot. If he's not the starter at 2b, he's the primary backup at 2B, SS and 3B. And besides, Hoffpauir and Johnson aren't any good either, so why is it better if they get those AB's?

Yeah, he's never traded up in the 1st though -- that I can remember. I realize that, but it's beside the point. Angelo was trading down when everybody thought it was awesome to trade up. Now everybody thinks it's horrible to trade up. It seems to me the real value of higher picks is probably underappreciated at this point in time.
  7. Hoff stands little to no chance of making the team. You can't say Bradley is taking Fontenot at bats when he will probably struggle to take over the Edmonds total. And Johnson isn't going to be taking up Fontenot at bats either. Miles is going to get a lot more than 150 AB's, and trying to account for who they came from is pretty ridiculous. The Cubs had DeRosa and Fontenot and now they have Miles and Fontenot. It's a significant downgrade no matter what you want to pretend.

  10. :-)) Despite that Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the show? Yeah, he's not misunderstood. He's a loon. But he can be a successful loon if he stays somewhat healthy.
  11. It was Gammons talking and it was a really disappointing hot stove update. But yes, that's been the plan according to most of the beat writers. Samardzija had very limited starting success in the minors and will definitely need some time to develop.

  13. Joba and Papi are on CNBC talking to Maria Bartiroma (who has packed a few on over the years) at CES. Joba looks like such a fat slob and he dwarfs Papi.
  14. Questioning his choice? Yeah, he isn't even the best back on his own team and he can't stay healthy. I can't see him doing anything in the NFL at all. Maybe at full back? I don't get it. He's probably leaving early because he figures his stock won't rise by coming back. If he's stuck behind a guy on the roster, his stock may only drop. He could potentially be grabbed this year in a late round to be a team's bruiser (similar to, but not as good as, LenDale). I wouldn't question any backs decision to come out early. Their ability is like a ticking time bomb.
  15. He's gonna get a lucky shallow OF blooper to win a game at some point, and you're gonna hear about his guts, and grit, and how he plays the game the right way. Wrong. Black guys can't be gritty. Don't you know the rules? I dunno. How else has Juan Pierre built a career if not for his grit? I think this rule needs to be challenged. Surely Neifi was gritty. Tony Womack. I never thought they were characterized as gritty. Juan was given the "speed doesn't slump" monikor, Neifi was a versatile sure-handed professional hitter (yes, I read that he was a professional hitter). And Womack was just Tony Womack. Silly argument of course, but doing a google search for all three with the word "gritty" included turns up hits for all 3 where gritty was used in reference to them (admittedly, I found only one direct usage of it for Neifi and Womack each). Are there any good players labeled as "gritty"? Jeter, Pete Rose, Carlton Fisk, Biggio. Everybody used to be gritty. They all played the game the right way, which is rule #1. And catchers don't count, they're all gritty, except for the ones with frosted tips and bleached hair.
  16. He's a beast for a safety though...It'll almost be hard not to move him to LB At already 6'3 and 230lbs (if you believe his listed weight) he's already pushing the limit on being a safety. I wish I could share your certaintly, but it wouldn't surprise me if he ends up at LBer within two yrs. That size is Urlacher range Isn't Urlacher about 6'4" 260?
  17. +1 I hate the fact that I have to worry about Cubs' players getting injured before the season even starts. In soccer, international competition is more prestigious than club competition. Why is baseball so different? Every other sport is different. There was no international competition worth having, since the US dominate the sport for the first 3/4 of its existance. Futbol has had that internation level of competition long before guys made millions of pounds/francs/pesos/euros/etc. I guarantee if they didn't already have the world cup in place, it would be hard as heck to get players interested, let alone fans. They make their living playing professionally. Back when guys didn't get paid much, the international games were a way for them to get more recognition. But now, there is no financial gain to play in the WBC or not play in the WBC.
  18. I've said it 100 times and I'll quote you for the 101st. I cannot see the Cubs going into the season with only one guy capable of backing up 3rd, SS and 2B. I see no way Hoff makes this team, unless Gathwright is traded or they grow the balls to go with a 6 man bullpen. We have a lot of choices for the seventh reliever spot who have options remaining. Hoffpauir also has options remaining. It would be nice if they switched back and forth between seventh reliever and sixth bench guy depending upon need (workload on the remainder of the bullpen, etc.). It would be nice, but with the required 10-day (or is it 14?) after the demotion, it's hard to do that with a reliever and a position player. It's easier with 3 relievers.

  21. I'll never complain about a rival with a limited budget spending valuable resources on a 41 year old reliever with the "closer" tag.
  22. Reed is worthwhile. The other two leave enough to be desired that they shouldn't be considered viable options for a supposed championship contender to fill in 40 games missed by one of its 3-4-5 hitters. Miles can play some OF too, right? We better hope he never does.
