I'm pretty sure a changeup is considered a "breaking ball" I've only heard the term used in reference to curve/slider, usually.... And even so, why wouldn't he just say changeup then? Changeup = offspeed. Breaking ball is curve, slider, slurge, screwball,... Not all changes are created equal. Some have more movement than others and could be considered breaking balls. -

Angelo isn't flip flopping on Plax. He had some quotes that one headline writer decided to frame as Jerry refusing to go after Plax, but it was very clear from the start he was open to the idea.

Looks like it should be clearing out in an hour or two and might start pretty close to on-time. I wouldn't call you a bad fan for waiting on the weather but I'd just go ahead and plan on getting there at a normal time myself.

I think the 150 appearances and 200 IP the last two years has taken its toll on his arm.

Waddels gone, Im starting to trust Heilman again, and we know what Marmols capable of. As for Patton, that little experiment needs to come to an end. Im sure hed have no problem making it through waivers and if they really want him that bad, a deal could probably be worked out. If not, oh well. Why does it need to come to an end though? It's not like they are desperate for BP arms right now. They are desperate for roster spots for people who can hit the baseball. What happens when Freel is activated. Does Fox get sent down again because they insist on using 12 roster spots for pitchers without using 12 pitchers?

I doubt that Harden is handled with kid gloves. He should be, but he wasn't to start this year. He went every 5th day and was having his pitch count extended, 99, 101, 112 in his last three starts before injury. They should have worked in more rest between starts early. Anyway, I don't think Pedro comes in as a starter. He's a spot starter and long reliever at this point if you ask me. He could have value to this team considering they insist on carrying 12 pitchers but have multiple ones they refuse to use.

So there has been a bit of an uproar over the status of those who bought tickets for yesterday's action. A guy called into Mike Francesa (formerly of Mike and Mad Dog show) and said he'd paid $150 for his ticket and only saw a handful of players on a couple holes. Most people didn't even tee off, and those that did didn't go very far. The PGA is doing nothing to either reimburse or allow them to see another day. Francesa went ballistic as only he can, saying he'd make this the main story at 1:05 today (when his show starts) and come in on Saturday and make it the focus of the show. Apparantly now they are allowing people with Thursday tickets to come watch on Monday, if there is golf. Bad weather on Saturday should make that happen, and a tie in the final round would make it certain. But it's no guarantee. I think there has to be some sort of understanding when purchasing a ticket that weather can effect how much golf you see. But if all you get is 2 hours in the morning, there should be some sort of prorated reimbursement, opportunity to come back on Friday and/or tickets to next year's Open. Oh, and the leaders are still -1 while Tiger just finished round 1 +4. Phil is teeing off right now with Goosen and Els. Round two slated to begin at 4pm.

Gooney, what is The Gorge ? Lou talking about Soriano's struggles, said you can have peaks and valleys, but he's been in a gorge. I was thinking about Gorgiano, but went with The Gorge.

Who said it was because of injury? It probably is because of health concerns, because despite driving up PC fairly early, he's only 4th on the team in P/GS. He's only gone over 100 three times. Of course 2 of those times (preceded by a 99 pitch outing) led into his month long sabbatical. He's been pulled early after getting smacked around twice (3 IP and 3 2/3 IP) when he threw 92 and 86 pitches. So basically, he's a 95 pitch pitcher, and most of the time (this year) that has gotten him through 6.

off topic, and not really a big deal, but what's with the cheap shot at Harden? he's only gone less than six innings twice in nine starts. that's hardly a "5-inning pitcher". i guess technically he's averaging less than six innings because of his two bad starts. I don't think it's a cheap shot, but it is a mischaracterization. The perception is that Harden can really only give you 5 and then you need the bullpen. In reality he averages pretty close to 6. So it's more like 5+ innings. But really, he's very likely to give you 6+ when he goes, the problem is he has been pulled after 3 a couple times this year, bringing down that average. And last year he did have 4 starters where he went exactly 5 and 2 more when he was pulled after getting an out or two in the 5th. I think it's a fair description, even if it's slightly inaccurate. You could call him a 5 2/3 inning pitcher, but that doesn't really flow well.

I'd give a standing O as he comes out to the mound and as he makes his first pitch, but be more focused on what the Cubs do starting from then. I wouldn't cheer for strike outs or anything. -

i'll be getting inebriated no matter what the cubs do...a win would just be icing on the cake. Yeah, I'll rejoice if the Cubs win and because it's Friday, but I'll get inebriated no matter the outcome, or the day for that matter.

The economy tanked before he "won" the deal. Huh...seemed like longer ago than that. The announcement came in January 2009. The recession began in December 2007, the market collapse began in September/October 2008, with the lows coming in November. The lows were tested again in March 2009 then quickly began to rebound. Anyway, I doubt he's trying to stall his way out. Zell is a tough negotiator. Considering how he was trying to scam the state into buying Wrigley and selling the team seperately, and then doing whatever he could to frame the sale as tax friendly as possible, plus the broadcasting rights issue, it makes sense that Ricketts wouldn't just give in to every demand. -

Oh come on..lets not pretend he's the thing that's somehow keeping the Cubs from winning. He's a part of the problem...he's not THE problem. He's probably the biggest individual piece of the problem. And replacing him in the lineup, even if you replace him with someone who's hitting, all you'd have is a cheaper lineup with 7 players not hitting. So because there are other problem players people shouldn't talk about the biggest one?

Our number 3 hitter is slugging .395. Our number 5 hitter is sluging .307. The team sucks. Focusing on Soriano is odd. It's not really odd at all. Highest paid player, longest contract, and lowest OPS in June of any everyday player (only Fukudome has been less productive). It seems to make a hell of a lot of sense actually.

You certainly can expect a GM to act responsibly and understand the consquences of such longterm deals. He cannot expect payroll to climb indefinitely. He has to operate under a sense of caution that any huge deal now will effect future deals. Furthermore, he knew at the time ownership was in limbo and there was not a clear indication what future budgets would be. He was in a CYA frame of mind, doing what he could do to be successful as soon as possible so the outgoing executives could justify giving him a contract. His only concern was a short-term fix from the disastrous teams he put together in 2005 and 2006 that should have led to his firing. But since Andy gave him a deal on his way out the door, and ownership was preoccupied, he was given a free pass. What was uncertain was his employment status in 2009 and beyond, so he spent lavishly on a good, but very far from great player who could help in the short-term but was obviously going to hurt them in the long-term. Yes, you can, and should expect a GM to plan responsibly for the future.

I'm not saying he'll get 8, I'm saying it's pointless to discuss the fact that NY already suspended him for 4 games. They suspended him for general douchebaggery when he was already hurt and unable to play. The league is going to suspend him for breaking the law. It's a seperate situation.
