  1. In a literal sense, sure. But if you start out 0-3, week 4 is a must win if you want any realistic chance to contend. And going to 1-3 is a huge hole, especially when your division leaders are undefeated. Lose here and you have to go 8-4 just to finish above .500 and have an outside shot at the playoffs.
  2. Bears are 6.5 point favorites, which kind of surprises me. I think Carolina is 3-0 against the spread so far, while the Bears are 1-2. Carolina has been able to throw the ball in non-torrential rain storm situations. The Bears can't stop the pass, but after facing three straight top notch QBs they should be able to handle Cam Newton. They have a history of handling mobile QBs fairly well. And with 3 games of film on the guy they have to be able to exploit his inexperience. At the same time, Carolina can't stop the pass, or pressure the QB much. So the Bears have to win this game if they want any chance of staying in contention this season. A loss would be devestating. A win puts them into position to possibly go on a little run here. But that's a discussion for another day.
  3. there were like 5 people in the box on that run. GB was daring the Bears to run and that crap line still couldn't come close to blocking well enough to maintain the line of scrimmage, let alone gain yards.
  4. No, you might as well not go to 3, because that screws up everybody else who has to wait around for the series. Plus there would be all sorts of travel questions if you had the teams each get a chance to play in their home stadium. You open up the playoffs to more fan bases, which increases interest. There is automatically going to be 2 must-see games at the beginning of every playoffs. Everybody loves win or go home games and they don't happen enough. That increases interest. You add a huge incentive to winning your division, and subsequently a huge incentive to having the best record in your league. As things stand now there is virtually no difference between winning 105 games as a division winner or sneaking into the playoffs with an 85 win wild card season (or division winning season for that matter). The only "downside" is it punishes the best wild card winner, but that's too bad. Win your division next time.
  5. The line sucks, the wide receivers offer nothing and Cutler isn't good enough to make up for those weaknesses. Nice work Angelo.
  6. Rodgers is good but gb is terrible and they should lose 6-8 games easy. Refs hande them the game.
  7. Bad game by bears but green bay only won by gift handed by refs. Horrible job by refs giving gb the game.
  8. Really? I honestly didn't know that the winner of the conference tourney wasn't considered the champ. What's the point of the tourney then? Money. That and a last second opportunity for a bubble (or worse) team to make the big dance.
  9. You are making a very weird assumption. The chances not looking good are about the fact that nobody in the organization can/will talk to him about his contract situation as things stand right now. It says absolutely nothing about what he wants to do. For the greater part of a decade he's made it very clear he likes playing here and wants to keep playing here. Right now things are in flux and he and his agent are positioning themselves to negotiate with his team.
  10. http://deadspin.com/5843329/orlando-zeus-brown-tackle-best-known-for-suing-the-nfl-after-taking-a-penalty-flag-in-his-eye-dead-at-40 The guy who got hit in the eye with a penalty flag is now dead.
  11. What did you want him to say sooner? That he no longer wanted to be here so we could have traded him. He's saying it now because they no longer have a GM and nobody has talked to him about picking up his contract. While they could trade him they still had a GM and he probably thought Jim would pick up his option. He's talking right now, putting pressure on the Cubs to do something.
  12. What did you want him to say sooner?
  13. And I'm just saying that's nonsense. He's going to get blasted in the press eventually over anything that happens on any subject. The level of press criticism he receives will eventually depend on how often the team loses. And press criticism is an asinine thing to consider when debating a transaction. He's the new guy. He will have a honeymoon period regardless. If he brings in quality players and the team wins, nobody worth listening to is going to kill him for hanging onto Zambrano instead of paying somebody else to try and win with him.
  14. 1) "Back when we had Castro at SS, we could afford to have less production at some other "offensive" positions." 2) Dew is driving at the point that we could invest $16M at 3B and accept mediocrity somewhere else, or we could invest somewhere else and accept mediocrity at 3B. You're investing the same and getting equivalent short term production. But he's saying there's less short term injury risk and much more long term value in the other options. 3) Dew is also saying is that it is "easy" to find league average production at 3B for the Cubs because they already have half a platoon that is a good bet to put up an .850 OPS versus lefties. That means the Cubs only have to find someone that can hit righties at around a .650 clip to achieve league average. Then who replaces Baker as the primary RH bat off the bench, plus OF/2B depth? There's a hell of a lot more righty pitchers out there and finding the guy who can hit them is much more important and much harder to do. It's completely unnecessary to make this move, but if you do you more or less write off 2012, which is a dumb idea.
  15. You don't have to fight to keep a guy under contract that is hard to trade. You tell your owner you gave it the old college try but did not feel comfortable with any offers and would feel more comfortable to try and make it work with him than dump him. The Cubs already suck and will have a tough time to be good next year. Letting Ramirez walk and paying Zambrano to go away is just going to make it harder to conted next season. As I've posted before, the Cubs have no leverage in this situation, but I can't believe some other team doesn't want to take a chance on him as a #3 or #4 starter with the Cubs footing most of the bill. I'm sure multiple teams would love to have him for nothing. That doesn't help the Cubs though.
  16. Yeah, I don't know if it was because it was the beginning of the internet/espn dominated era of sports or what. But in the end it was just another loss. WFAN in NY was cutting in and airing lots of Cubs broadcasts that year because of the HR chase and so everybody listening to NY sports radio heard it (at the time it was the only sports radio here). You could here WGN online anywhere in the world so people heard that everywhere.

  18. NFL contracts are not guaranteed.
  19. If that's the case as far the developmental staff only using stats, Marmol and Wells wouldve been released as no hit catchers and Lake would not have made it past Peoria. This is getting sad.
  20. wasn't it hendry that said that? i'm hoping that with both hendry and quade done, we at least give him the chance to come back and create a little more leverage for a trade. Ricketts has all but ruled out any chance of keeping Zambrano.
  21. While I agree that he needs to be paid, one thing you don't do is sign a RB to a 7-8 year contract. I don't care who he is. Huh? This isn't baseball. You sign him for as longterm as you can, to spread out the cap hit. It's not the length that is all that scary, it's the guarantee.
  22. A) They've spent a lot of money on washed up offensive linemen. B) They spent 1st round draft pick money on a few RBs and brought in veteran free agents. C) Muhsin Muhammed D) It's not like they haven't tried to pay him more. Forte asked for more than they offered. Whatever they end up giving him, he will be a salary cap hit in a couple years.
  23. Has it ever come out that something more happened besides what was reported? Because for the life of me I don't understand how that was a "can no longer be a part of this organization" offense. It's just so ineffective to force yourself to trade a guy.
