    It'll be interesting to read how Miles covers this, as he's been the only writer in town consistently pointing out the flaws of Hendry's strategies.

    He was the worst. He had this whole "who does this punk kid think he is?" attitude through the show. I hope Theo's arrival means that the Chicago media actually starts to learn some things about baseball. I doubt that very much. Kaplan sucked up to the guy because that is what he does as he's attracted to men with power and jocks. Van Dyck probably showed how most old timers will treat it, the punk kid attitude was accurate. Sullivan will continue to highlight the skeptical smart ass contingent, etc.

    Van Dyck was more impressed with Dallas Green because he talked to neighborhood groups about lights. Yeah, the baserunning thing made me think he wanted to say "look, over the course of 6 months and nearly 700 PA, you will occasionally see a guy mistake how far he hit the ball, the important thing is to not overreact and make things worse, because you know, he did hit the ball hard in the first place and that is what matters."

    The Cards reported max so far was 9 years/$195 million right? No problem. While I definitely agree with that, what if he mulls it over, and the Cards up their offer some? If the worst thing that happens is that a division rival with a smaller budget pays a hell of a lot more than they wanted to in order to keep the status quo, then I can live with that.

    Yeah, and I'm not sure what to take from it. How strict will he be with that? Does he oppose ever giving any big contracts to any guy who is outside his prime years? What if he's in his prime when you give the contract, but he'll exit it during the contract (Prince)? It's a great rule to follow in general terms, but I think it has to be a flexible rule when considering specifics and I'd imagine that's what Theo will do in practice. I'm not sure about that, though. It was in direct response to a question about pre-and-post prime players, and I don't really think he made any sort of statement that he would never sign a 32 year old.

    No. I don't see any scenario where Z pitches for us again. Theo wasn't as sure about that on ctl as you are. He said starting pitching is something the cubs need and thzZ does have talent. But said he needed to do a lot of listening. I kept hearing him talk about "buying into the program", "everybody on the same page", "everybody accepting responsibility", "players supporting their team mates", etc. None of that sounds like Carlos Zambrano. Zambrano's issues have always been tied more into how poorly he handles losing. It's not like he's some stats obsessed fried chicken in the clubhouse eating jerk. He's the first guy to celebrate with his teammates.

    I will absolutely be pissed that they pissed away an opportunity to significantly improve the 2012 team and damage a division rival. I won't blame Theo though. It's probably Crane's fault.

    What is this nonsense? Why isn't Fielder the type of player you want to build around? He's a tremendous first basemen and he's not old. Pujols is aging, and he's still a tremendous player. The Cubs have nothing in the system that even resembles a first basemen. They need one, and they have a rare chance to acquire one this very offseason. And they have the financial flexiblity to get it done and thrive as a result now and in the longterm.

    I could see it, but I think it would be a mistake. The Cubs remain starved for 1B in the system and there are two great ones available who are on division rivals. This type of player doesn't become available every year, and most of the time when they do, the two biggest spenders, Boston and NYY are much more likely to get those players. An improved system should also lessen the negative impact of a decline by either player 5-6 years from now.

    I don't think it is. I think it alluded a bit more to the fact that the Cubs always went after very physically gifted players who were not necessarily great baseball players, or were extremely flawed in some aspect of their game. Soriano is a ridiculously talented baseball player. Ronny Cedeno was a gifted physical talent as well, so was Patterson and several others, including Vitters. It's more about the type of player they used to prefer and the development of that player. Well obviously some of it is bringing in the wrong players, some of it is doing a poor job of teaching young players. And that's not really on the manager. Managers don't teach players how to convert from raw physical talents to really good baseball players, that is what developmental people do. And the Cubs have been lacking.

    I just gloated to our office's lone Red Sox fan about Theo. She can't decide if he was just in the right place at the right time or that good. She's dumb, and very ugly.

    In this complete disaster of a season for the Red Sox where everything had to be blown up, they won 90 games. The Cubs did that once under Jim Hendry and only twice in 22 years.

    Theo on PTI: from afar I saw they had a lot of talented players but didn't get the most out of that talent. offensively they were aggressive, probably overly aggressive in recent years defensive fundamentals were an issue.
