  1. The roster was littered with garbage long before Sammy arrived. The lineup has been a much bigger problem for the past decade than the rotation.
  2. Phil Rogers doing what Phil Rogers does best.
  3. I think you have to throw Hanie out there to take the punishment for how horrible he has been this month. He's been absolute garbage. I can't believe they aren't going to get past 7 wins. My bets are ruined.
  4. and the chief of police
  5. Wait, I didn't notice this before. How the hell is there definitely a benefit to signing this guy to a deal that guarantees $8m?
  6. I'm not seeing anything. I do see 2 ESPN stories about PSU though, one about JoePa's legacy: http://espn.go.com/blog/sportsbusiness/post/_/id/158/paterno-legacy-likely-trails-coaching-icons and one about the trial http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/7359173/former-penn-state-officials-gary-schultz-tim-curley-face-trial-perjury
  7. That's because they can't be traded until July.
  8. Apparently everybody else found out about this story in the last 2-3 hours.
  9. I have two questions marks about Darvish, while I expect him to be good, there's still quite a bit of variance on what we can reasonably expect out of him. And two, while Fielder's longevity issues are real, a pitcher never has the upper hand in that debate, especially one coming over from Japan.
  10. Isn't he essentially the same age that Daisuke was when he was posted?
  11. you seem hung up on the 30 mil number when it's actually just over 5 million per year. either you're doing it wrong or you're being purposefully misleading. There's also a fairly substantial difference between what good prospect is and what a great prospect is.
  12. for the record, I wouldn't cry if Coco Crisp was on the team. I just think he's not the type of player this organization should be going after, and if they do go after such a player we're essentially playing not to suck next year instead of trying to be good. He has no long-term value and only marginal short-term value. Unless this team actually finds impact players elsewhere, he serves no purpose other than being a placeholder.
  13. Wow, that's actually pretty impressive. I've gone from laughing at his stupidity to grudgingly giving him respect. I'm still going to laugh at his stupidity because the idiot KNEW that the Feds were watching him since at least July and he didn't back off or lay low for a while. I don't think he knew they were watching him, I think he thought he got away with something in July and was now scott-free.
  14. Not sure where you're getting that, even if you don't include defensive value. br.com, 0.7, 1.5, 1.5, 0.8. Right through his prime
  15. I wouldn't lose faith in the direction of the front office as much as I would just be incredibly disappointed and bored with the Oakland A's playing at Wrigley Field next year.
  16. Again, UZR must be the luckiest guesser that ever guessed then. To bring it back to Crisp, do you think his defensive value is appreciably lower than the relatively modest +5 that UZR assigned to him? You keep railing on this like UZR is giving him his entire value with the glove. Even if we ignore his defensive value entirely, he's been worth 5 wins the last two years. He was also worth less than that the previous 4 years combined.
  17. He's stolen a base every 10 plate appearances the last two years. His offensive production isn't paltry, especially since we're talking about Crisp replacing Soriano, Byrd, or Jackson, none of whom you can clearly say are going to be more productive offensively. Well, maybe Byrd. Either way the point remains. But if all you do is replace mediocrity with mediocrity you are still left with mediocrity. It's just shuffling the deck.
  18. I have a problem pretending you know how many runs a guy prevents with his glove, and then pretending a run created = a run prevented. I also have problem with the notion that everybody is very happy to forecast the decline in runs created via the bat with age and then ignoring the decline in 30-something year olds whose defensive value is tied very closely to their legs. I know you like to dismiss UZR as magic beans, but you just sound bad for trying to dismiss defensive value in its entirety. I don't dismiss the value of defense, I think you sound bad pretending you can put a runs driven in with their glove number on players, especially going forward.
  19. If we don't go big then I want a fire sale.
  20. If the Cubs are keeping their bid amount locked down, there's no amount of trading numbers that could lead to others knowing if we outbid the Blue Jays or not. What if the leak is from the MLB offices? It could be but I just highly doubt it is. I get having doubt, but "highly"? Several leaks have apparently originated in league offices.
