  1. If Hendry did deals in the middle of open heart surgery, Jed can step away from fetching his wife ice cubes long enough to get something done.
  2. No reason to be worried or concerned about it.
  3. What a difference a year makes for this game. Last year I went with some friends and froze my balls off. There was a bunch of snow on the ground and several snowball fights. Today feels like early September.
  4. I have no idea why he was rushed to the bigs. If he was given more time and if he was in the right organization he might have been decent. He was rushed? He had well over 1000 PA in AA over the course of 3 seasons, and that was with 3 seasons worth of major college baseball. He was 24 when he got his first call-up and he tore the cover off the ball the following spring. I hardly think he was rushed. Half his value was in the fact that he was fairly polished and a guy who was likely to make the majors (as opposed to a guy with upside to do well in the majors). I agree he may have had a better chance in a better organization, but better organizations wouldn't have drafted him where the Cubs did.
  5. theo was referred to as tight lipped in Boston. I don't think it's too early to characterize them that way
  6. My only concern is that he'll continue to get worse, to the point where teams won't even want to waste a guaranteed roster spot on him. If you can trade him now with a few million in salary relief for the next three years, I say do it. I highly doubt his value is going to rise much. But if your only upside to trading now is a few million bucks, then it makes more sense to keep him since he could have a good year, making it possible to unload even more money, if needed, or possibly get a prospect. As a big market team with room in the payroll you can afford to gamble a few million dollars on the chance you'll get more in the future. The concern is that he has an even worse year, and you're forced to eat his entire contract. I guess it just depends on how much the Cubs value the possible millions saved over the next few years Yes, that's the concern. But in the grand scheme the entire contract isn't much more than the vast majority of his contract. There's very little to be gained by forcing him out today, and it's worth trying to see if he can rebound a little and get a contender to bite on more.
  7. There was never any reason to punt 2012.
  8. Shannon Doherty is doing online degree commercials. Ouch.
  9. They are just the delivery guy, the elfs make the babies in Santa's workshop once they are done with toys.
  10. Saban is looked at like the devil because he's jumped from program to program, not because he allowed an assistant coach to use the facilities to recruit rape victims. The public perception problems at PSU aren't going to be fixed by hiring some no name guy who will always toe the line. I don't see how these things are related.
  11. but still, he was probably in the deal
  12. i don't love this. i also feel like we need more of an adjustment for who the baserunners are than i am seeing. all that said, the suggestion that the hit and run isn't a disaster now that we've cut it down to only to most ideal situations isn't a shocking one. i still don't want to see my team using it. Yeah, that's pretty silly.
  13. both abuck and his buddy? There was an elderly couple, and then a middle aged dude with his sons, so, at least 6 more than I've ever seen before. Last year K State fans were everywhere.
  14. whiter than Merill? Or Jed?
  15. With Marshall gone, Wood probably is the set-up man. I think $2.5-3 with incentives is probably market value for a decent set-up man. You don't pay the man based on a job role he's "earned" by default because the team is being torn apart.
  16. There's no reason it should take that long.
  17. this city has been overrun with Cyclones fans.
  18. Maybe license out the Cubs name to other organizations in an effort to maximize revenues.
  19. Did McNabb throw that one?
  20. At this point I really just want to see how much lower they can get the payroll.
  21. Nobody is an ideal use of resources. Or maybe better said, the Cubs have a lot of resources and very little in the way of ideal targets to spend those resources on.
  22. Well you'd have to wait for a while and hope he improves quickly because looking for a deal anytime soon isn't going to be selling high.
  23. I'm concentrating on it because it was a nonsensical statement by you. "Blowing up in your face" is an overly dramatic way of describing the limited downside to such a move. It's not going to blow up in their face. There's only so many prospects worth spending big on. And there's a crapload of unspent payroll available for 2012. It's not "my way". I'm just pointing out how ridiculous it is to talk about the risk of blowing up in your face. The season is a waste going in, might as well look at every option to acquire more talent in the future. Signing guys you can trade later is one way, and the fact that he's a "closer" and you already have a "closer" shouldn't affect your decision making on the matter.
  24. What the hell is this chance you are taking? The team sucks. The money is available. You are making up nonsensical worries about nothing. Worst comes to worse, you aren't able to trade him and he leaves at year end. Oh well. That didn't blow up in your face. You sucked before and you sucked after. So [expletive] what? First off, the fear of them somehow being worse because they are on the same team is kind of stupid. Neither guy is elite, but both could be trade bait in July. If one struggles, you trade the one that is doing well. If they both struggle, so what, you were already throwing away 2012 and are only out money. The whole point is to acquire assets that can help in the future. It's not about constructing an ideal roster in 2012. They've already given up on that notion. If you aren't acquiring guys who can help you the most in 2012, acquire guys you can trade later.
