  1. I wouldn't be so sure about the Pittsburgh curb stomping. They are losing players left and right and struggled to beat Cleveland twice in the 2nd half of the year. They barely beat KC, Jacksonville and Indy at times this year. They might shut out the Broncos, but they also might now score much themselves. Agreed. A Pittsburgh team who was already not playing that well, now loses both Mendenhall and Clark and is playing on the road? I don't trust them very much at all. It's amazing how fast the AFC has fallen. The last few years 3-5 teams legitimately had a shot to win the Super Bowl. This year it's...2 maybe? The first sign was when the Jets were represented in back to back championship games.
  2. http://www.chicagotribune.com/media/alternatethumbnails/story/2012-01/67124175-03142252.jpg Look at those eyes. The pointless John Mullin asked George if he wanted to go the route of Jerry Jones and be the owner/GM. He said no.
  3. They don't play college football on new years anymore
  4. I should also add that George praised Jerry's professionalism and was very clear in his support of Ted remaining in his job.
  5. Coaches can still be fired after the Monday after the regular season ends. That said, if the Chargers want to continue being mediocre that badly, then more power to them. It's not just that they haven't been fired yet, it's that they announced Smith and Turner will return in 2012.
  6. I was late, but heard all of George's. He basically talked about the structure, ownership hires president/CEO, president/CEO hires GM with consultation from ownership, GM hires coach with consultation from president/CEO, ownership. This was Phillips call, he came to George with the idea of firing Angelo and keeping Lovie. George provided his opinion and that of the rest of ownership and allowed Ted to make the move. It sounds to me like they are going to be hiring a guy who can work with Lovie (that's fine by me), as opposed to some Bill Parcells power hungry type. That GM will have a year or two to live with Lovie before he can decide to keep him, or go with somebody else. And again, that works for me. Get a real OC who is up to the challenge and a personel guy who will address offensive line and WR and this team can be right back in the playoffs next year, no question.
  7. It sounds to me like Polian would not be in-line for the gig. He was a vice chairman and more than just a GM, but the Bears are looking strictly at a GM to fit in between Phillips and Lovie on the power structure.
  8. ? Is this an online thing? http://www.csnchicago.com/live_bears
  9. I can get on board with this. My biggest issues with Lovie are gameday related, which can be helped with coordinators that do their jobs. I love George calling his mom by her first name.
  10. George isn't a great speaker, but I like what he's saying and how he's saying it. He's blunt and clear.
  11. When the Bears hired Angelo he had to keep Angelo in the beginning, coming off two horrible seasons. GM positions in the NFL are weird. NFL head coaches have much more power than MLB managers. It's not always the case where the GM comes in and hires his guy to coach the team, and that the coach is his underling. Lovie has been head coach for a long time, so he's going to have power, or he's not going to be there.
  12. Over Linehan?

  14. you mean when they have good quarterbacks. you don't run for the sake of running when your quarterback is aaron rodgers. The Eagles won a hell of a lot of games and went deep into many playoffs when McNabb was throwing every play and didn't suck. They struggled when McNabb started to fall apart.
  15. That's a personel issue. So are we throwing it just to throw it or are we throwing it because we're good at it? That's my point. It's a passing league, but the Bears shouldn't be passing just because everyone else is. They suck at it, so they should run more because they were actually good at it. That's a whole bunch of [expletive]. Jay Cutler sucked at throwing for the Bears? Give me a break raw, that's absurd. Caleb Hanie couldn't throw the damn ball. Without Jay Cutler throwing the ball the Bears go 2-30 the past 2 years.
  16. Because their QB is the best player on the field. And the more you have him throw, the more likely it is for him to be off the field when you don't have him adequately protected from getting hit on most of those passes. Granted, throwing a ton works for Brees, Brady, and Rodgers who are the most talented players on the field, but they also have good protection. Rodgers got sacked a billion times a couple years ago. Ben gets hit every damn play. Brady was sacked as often this year as Cutler was in his first year with the Bears. The teams that win consistenly throw the damn ball a hell of a lot, and their QBs take sacks. You don't stop passing because of that. The Bears, under Martz and Cutler, could actually complete 3rd and 8 situations, something the Bears never do. They could actually drive down the field. They weren't a good overall offense because their bosses did a horrible job finding them linemen and receivers, but they did what they could with what they had.
  17. That's a personel issue.
  18. Why do people keep asking this question? Everybody in the NFL is one season away from potentially being fired. I'm sure the new guy will get a 2-3 year contract, depending on how in demand he is. The Bears job offers a lot of potential. It's one of only 32 OC positions in the NFL, and several of those are OC in name only, since the head coach is the real guy in control. Yes, everyone is 1 season away from being fired, but why go into a situation that looks like only 1 year is the most likely scenario. It's why Bates choose Seattle over the Bears. It's why other OCs weren't jumping at a chance to come here 2 years ago. The only way a new guy comes in, I believe, is if he has a legit shot at being a head coach in the very near future. AKA an experienced OC or a former HC. Worked out really well for Bates. The Bears offer a really good situation. They were going to win 11 games this year before their QB got hurt. They have a pro bowl caliber QB and very patient ownership. If somebody is afraid of having to make the playoffs next year, maybe they aren't a good OC candidate. The head coach has 2 years left on his contract and a history of getting the team ready to play.
  19. Because their QB is the best player on the field.

  21. I agree. I have no faith in Tice calling plays. Was he ever a play caller in Minnesota? Linehan was his OC, no? Just like last time this happened I want the best possible candidate for OC to be hired, with a preference for a guy who could theoretically take Lovie's job. I want the next Sean Payton.
  22. Pass-happy is good. The Bears had the 9th most rushing attempts in the league. Missing out on another year of Cutler in his prime was no blessing.
  23. The Packers, Saints, and Patriots all invested a top half of the draft pick to get their tight ends. In New England's case, they used two of 'em. Not saying it's vital but it's worth a look. Certainly wouldn't hurt to go from nonexistent production at TE to something approaching league average. We spent 5 years listening to people whine about TE while Desmond Clark was a perfectly average TE because people were obsessed with Gates and Gonzalez. It got annoying. And I can tell it's going to get annoying again. The point is there are MUCH BIGGER fish to fry instead of worrying about filling Ditka's position again.
  24. A) It's no sure thing Lovie will be working with a new GM this season. B) Any potential OC should relish the opportunity to work with an already in place Pro Bowl caliber QB. Would a big name prefer to go work with the mess that is the Dolphins and whoever gets that HC job? You think they'd prefer the Jets situation? Rex Ryan will have just as hot of a seat next year if he struggles, and Sanchez is an unstable Grossman in waiting. It's not like the New Orleans, Green Bay and New England jobs are going to out there for them to prefer. Any new OC who actually works well with Cutler and shows promise will instantly be at the top of the list for a potential replacement of Lovie if he is fired next winter. It's a pretty fantastic opportunity even for a variety of levels. It won't fit all candidates "ideal" scenario, but it's got plenty of upside.
  25. Unfortunately chipping/helping the LT is certainly not the only thing you have to worry about. You have to worry about Chris Williams not falling apart and Carimi actually reaching his promise and Garza not showing his age and your mediocre RG situation not taking any step back. This is no time to pretend the line is settled. It's a 5-man group that needs constant attention.
