  1. I wouldn't characterize it as plenty of time. The back and forth nature of his use stunted that development and the injury hurt. I have held the opinion since day 1 that he was destined for the bullpen, but that it was well worth the shot of trying to stretch him out. There's just a hell of a lot pushing against him trying to be a guy who starts 35 games with 220 IP.
  2. Really? We just gave up a high upside upper level arm. Granted, Cashner had big concerns to deal with off of injury, but that's a pretty steep price to pay in a deal these days overall, with how teams protect young pitchers with upside. You could make the case that Cashner was the highest valued asset in the deal, thus they had to toss Cates in, who I think is the clear 3rd highest valued asset in the deal, with us throwing a throw in in. Only because pitching is overvalued.
  3. He doesn't have to be elite to have this trade work out wonderfully.
  4. He hit the majors last year in San Diego. Didn't do very well, so I expect he will get more time in AAA and be up somewhere between May 1 and August 1. as TT mentioned, if you're going to bring him up before september, you might as well bring him up for opening day. Yeah, just read that. It makes sense, but you don't want the kid to come up right away and struggle again. If LaHair hits at all this spring, I think Rizzo goes down. Stick with the not on opening day idea to keep the potential for minimizing service time. If he rakes, you bring him up and worry about arby later, if he just does okay, hold him back until september.
  5. With a real 1B prospect on board I don't really care if Lahair starts.
  6. This change seems less impactful to Jay than previous ones, though. Since Tice was already familiar with the offense, and should be on the same page with Jay, in theory. I don't think so. I don't see Tice running Martz's system at all. Best case scenario, the new QB coach becomes the next OC in a year or two. But worst case is that Tice/New guy run some 1995 scheme that waste Jay's ability, and they clean house in 2013, and the Bears try and go cheap on Jay's extension since his numbers won't be great, while Jay chooses to play for free agency and go to a team with a clue about offense. Please stop. I honestly don't know if I could handle that. That makes the Bulls post-Jordan era seem bearable (no pun intended). It's not what I picture happening, but it's worst case for certain. If they acquire a solid GM and the QB coach is respectable they aren't going to come close to worst case, but it's not crazy. There's still room to make this thing work perfectly.
  7. I don't think we needed to wait to realize that.
  8. No, you get him playing by midseason so that you know what you have by April 2013. If he doesn't play much this year, and burns next year's option, you have to keep him up in 2014 as a 24 year old potentially not knowing if he's really going to make it.
  9. So Vogelbach better turn into a fantastic trade bait.
  10. Why wouldn't Rizzo? June at the latest. To steal an extra year of team control out of him, rather than waste one on a lost season. And spending all year mashing pcl is a year of wasted development. Hold a couple months to ensure hes not a super two, but he might as well be here if he's ready. Not on opening day, which was the entire damn point.
  11. He crushed the PCL last year. If he crushes the PCL this year for even a couple of months, there's no reason not to bring him up and let him start making adjustments to MLB pitching. Once a prospect's proven what he can do at a level, you don't want to stagnate him there. Did I not write "unless he's absolutely destroying everything"? If the mashing continues then bring him up in June. Otherwise there's no rush.

  13. Why wouldn't Rizzo? June at the latest. He's 22, and this team is terrible. There's no reason to even consider him on opening day. Why rush him? Let him solidify his abilities in Iowa and call him up in September unless he's absolutely destroying everything.
  14. You say "get rid of Cashner" as though that was a plus in and of itself.
  15. Holy crap, Lahair is seriously going to be the starting 1B isn't he?
  16. cates was a 3rd round pick of SD in 2010 out of a CC in Texas
  17. http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=cates-002zac Zach Cates
  18. I think that's how I feel about it as well. A poor man's version of my Tex over Prior opinion.
