  1. It was a little tip Dale got from Dusty. "Catchers gotta hit 8th dude" Yeah that's terrible. I knew the lineup looked weak, but seeing the lineup together in that particular order mades me sad. I keep looking down the list looking for the "heart of the order" and it never comes. Meh, the order doesn't bother me nearly as much as the players who are in the order. Nobody but Castro has a strong case for hitting in the first inning.
  2. I would agree, but the fair criticisms are starting to catch up to the unfair ones.
  3. What? How the hell is that true?
  4. Why waste time thinking about somebody they don't have control of for 6 years? 2012 Cubs are Sveum's thing, 2015 Cubs are Jed and Theo's thing.
  5. He would be no better than a #2 on PHI, NYY, DET, LAD, probably LAA and maybe SFG. But there are good or potentially good teams where he could start opening day. TEX, BOS, STL, MIL, ATL, AZ maybe TB. There's no point in throwing in the qualifications, Garza isn't an elite pitcher, but he's a #1 capable guy. I agree with your post. Just want to point out that he kinda was last year. But that was last year and only one year, so it remains to be seen if a - he can keep it up (which is possible since it seems to be the result of a changed approach) and b - he can manage to stay healthy with that newer approach. I mean strictly in the sense that there are a handful of guys who are clearly better. Halladay, Lee, Sabathia, Verlander. He's not as good as those guys, but there aren't a lot of guys he fails to match up with.
  6. Much of this stuff is quite arbitrarily judged. And it really doesn't matter that Chicago produces a lot of talent if none of it wants to play in the wasteland of Champaign, Illinois.

  8. They crapped the bed. I mean, come on. It was an embarrassing process that they wouldn't have had to endure if the job was so great. Getting a young coach in demand is hardly an accomplishment, it's like the baseline for where you'd start the process. They missed on Smart and Stevens. Two longshots. They then got the next guy I would have wanted. I really don't think they crapped the bed at all. I guess that's understandable from somebody who wants it to be true, but there isn't an objective person in the country who agrees with you. They missed out on two guys they should have easily been able to hire if their job was so great. And they missed out in very public fashion after clearly going after guys.

  10. How? I think its a top 15 program. Even if all of the teams on abucks list were better than us. That still puts us at 15. I mean sure his list is awful, he didn't include Indiana in it, but even using it we are right at 15. Clearly the job isn't that great otherwise they wouldn't have crapped the bed on the coaching search, but you keep changing conversations between historical rankings, current ratings and how good the job is.
  11. I don't understand what's going on here but it seems to me that illiniguy is grasping at straws
  12. I like your list a lot better. But, I'd argue that UCONN s Calhoun and will fall apart fast after he is gone as it doesn't have a huge recruiting base nearby. I also don't think that Georgetown is a better job either. But, at least you listed Indiana. UConn will be fine. What is it, 2 hours from NYC and a half hour from ESPN? UConn is adopted by NY when it wins, but is largely ignored for the most part. Kind of like Illinois and Chicago's relationship? I think the Illinois/Chicago tie is stronger than UConn/NYC. UConn is half Boston and Syracuse is more of the de facto in-state school of choice despite being further away.

  14. No, some people just seem to be trying to back into convincing themselves that there's something more here than what is here. It is going to take a hell of a lot more than luck to make this offense something other than bad, like another round of roster overhaul.
  15. Oh man, that is one of the stupidest things sports fans and athletes get pissy about.
  16. For a comparison, Soto had a damn good 2010 season, the entire OF was solid, Colvin came out of nowhere with great numbers, Castro had a solid debut, Theriot did everything Darwin Barney can do and the team still finished 10th in the NL in runs scored and OPS. The rotation was fairly stable and relatively deep (the highest ERA among starters was 4.26 and 3 guys were sub 4.00) and Marmol and Marshall were great yet they still only won 75 games. I think a lot of people are putting a lot of faith in the notion that they won't be as horrible as they were last year in some spots. But you actually have to have some good players to be a good team. The Cubs don't have nearly enough good players.
  17. very little but receivers do occasionally virtually come out of nowhere
  18. One day he could be Bryan Lahair.
  19. Female soccer player goes berserker on opponent

  21. To be fair, only about half the bullpen will consist of major league arms.
  22. Jed said today that the pen wasn't decided yet. Marmol, Wood, and Russell are locks, and I haven't paid enough attention to who else is still in MLB camp. De la Cruz and new guy Camp are probably in the mix.
