  1. It ignores the entire universe of existence outside of the conversation at hand, which was whether or not Theo Epstein decided to tank the 2012 season. I'm very happy with what he's doing with the minor leagues and the overall organization. I just don't think that the tanking of 2012 was necessary to support those actions. I don't think giving LaHair six weeks of time at 1B to preserve an extra year of eligibility for Rizzo is the same thing as saying the Cubs didn't make any upgrade at 1B. The plan isn't to replace Pena with LaHair, it's replacing Pena with Rizzo, and using LaHair for six weeks to bridge the gap. There's no point in bringing up Rizzo after six weeks. If that is the plan, he should be there today.
  2. If they stay below .500 for the next 4 years the guy is toast. The fans will disappear, the ratings will plummet and things will get ugly. He's going to have to do something to come back for a 5th season, and not sucking is going to be the first thing. That almost certainly won't happen, because you would have to try to be that bad. It's one thing to try and be bad in year 1, it's not happening for 4 years.
  3. What the hell does Jackson have to do with anything? He was here.
  4. well then, since Theo has a 5 year deal, I guess we'll suck for the next 4 automatically then, by your thinking. Because he's certainly not getting fired between now and then. It's not going to take this group that length of time to get us from a crawl to a sprint. If they suck for 4 years he'll be gone before then.
  5. There's no good reason to put all this doubt into their future had they actually tried this year. If you want to get 6 out of 8 anything, it's not a good idea to pass on your first opportunity.
  6. I don't think I would want them to do this if I was a fan, but I will take the TE, Fleener at this spot. There's a couple other players I was thinking about but it keeps going to back to him.
  7. None of what has been said here is able to refute the notion that the man has a ridiculously long leash and he's very clearly going to use all of it.
  8. Positively glowing endorsement. He's worth more than a guy who has been a backup his whole career. Yay? I'm trying to stick to realistic, here. I said that worst case scenario, he's a better option than Baker. Best case scenario, he's a better option than Ramirez would have been. That's about as best case as the worst case scenario could be. Worst case is he blows again.
  9. Positively glowing endorsement. He's worth more than a guy who has been a backup his whole career. Yay?
  10. Yeah, it's very understandable. We all understand what he's trying to do. What he's not trying to do is make this team good as quickly as he can.
  11. They made moves to address 3B and RF, kept a cornerstone at SS, kept moderately productive pre-FAs at C and 2B, and have prospects ready to take over midseason at 1B and CF. I guess they could have sold Soriano and tried to fill LF a different way, but outside that, they either kept productive guys or made moves at every other spot. Wait, "keeping Castro" was a thing they did?
  12. Because it was the complete opposite of reality? No, not at all. Should have added, to get us there in a sustainable way longterm. We can debate all day about whether or not it's possible we could sign a Pujols, Fielder, etc, and get good and stay there, but we don't truly know if we could or not. Letting it sit for a year, finding where our true holes appear to be, is what Theo chose to do. He has a little more experience at this than you or I do, so I'm taking the approach he knows what he's doing and he's doing it as quickly as he can. If you want to think he's procrastinating and trying to field a Margaret Phelps team, be my guest. Nonsense. He's not doing it as quickly as possible. He knows he has a ridiculously long leash nobody else has and he's willing to let that leash extend as long as possible. There are absolutely zero signs of any sense of urgency or any interest in any sort of "quickly as he can" aspect to the plan. It will be as long and as drawn out as possible, like McClellan preparing the Army of the Potomac. Thankfully there aren't any lives on the line and he can still end up with great success despite taking his sweet old time. But there is nothing close to true about the statement that he is doing it as quickly as he can.
  13. Because it was the complete opposite of reality?
  14. campana is there, but not on the roster yet, correct. He's insurance against Lahair going to DL, which is a hilarious thought.
  15. According to Haugh the Blackhawks will be a threat if Toews returns, but it will be tough to make that argument if he does not return. now you know
  16. He's absolutely not trying to do it as quickly as possible. The fans and media are eating up this dismantling thing. They love it. Anybody else who was willing to blow it up would be praised as well.
  17. Doubtful. Hendry really only had negative public perception after back to back losing seasons and a 90-loss one. The public bent over backward to praise the man who brought back to back .500 seasons and many still thought he should keep the job through last season. The Cubs need to win a playoff series and avoid abysmal seasons (not counting this upcoming one) for Theo to maintain most of his faith. If they make a world series they will adore him for life.
  18. Bears opening preseason at home vs Denver and Washington, then at NYG and Cleveland.
  19. It looks to me from one of the photos that the basket is already there. I guess you're right, it looks like more of a lip to act as a divider rather than something designed to catch fly balls. Should be interesting to see if any problems come of it. I would bet some umps will miss calls, but thankfully with replay it shouldn't be hard to get it right.
  20. looks great there, but it's not on and it's masked by shadows. It will be interesting to see later in the afternoon when the sun is shining on it, and/or when it is operational.

  22. bears set to announce preseason schedule shortly
  23. I doubt it. They never air non-CSN games on EI. Likewise, they don't air Blackhawks games that are on WGN locally (as opposed to superstation) on center ice. The only chance to see it is if the other team is airing it, and strangely enough, with a few teams that isn't every game. There was a time in the past decade when Pittsburgh didn't air a few games. The Cubs were on WCIU and therefore I wasn't able to see it anywhere.
  24. I almost want them to do it in LF too I would bet heavily that is what they do. Is there enough demand for private parties to sell both sections for 300 people at a minimum of 50/group? I think it'd make more sense to sell them the way they sell the area behind home plate. Doesn't need to be a group thing. I'm just guessing they put some sort of board out there and change the seats.
