  1. Bears agreed to 1-year extension with Briggs.
  2. You can't bar significant injury problems, especially for a catcher. And he's not giving anything away for nothing, he's locking in lifetime financial security.
  3. Like TT said, just last year's performance was enough to justify almost that entire contract. In that sense, it's a hell of a value. That's largely a pointless statement, because he isn't a free agent. You don't get paid what you are theoretically worth, you get paid what you can get.
  4. Starting as the 7th hitter in this lineup and then being bumped to 8th after three games indicates to me that Sveum doesn't have much use for him. Watching him a couple times also gives me the impression that Byrd is somehow "disinterested" for lack of a better word. His first couple years he seemed more intense and gung ho about his role.
  5. What the hell is a "sudden" playmaker? Sounds good, in Thierry. Well played.
  6. I can't imagine any good reason to think about what is essentially a random trivia point. Unless you are talking about something like drafting QBs in the first round in back to back seasons, this is largely meaningless.
  7. She's probably not even hot in Iowa. When I heard volleyball I figured the range was quite wide, with the risk to the downside very high. Iowa has more than it's fair share of attractive women. It's not like we're Wisconsin, Minnesota, or Nebraska. Why don't you think Iowa deserves attractive women?
  8. DeJesus RF, Barney 2B, Castro SS, Soriano LF, Stewart 3B, LaHair 1B, Soto C, Byrd CF, Dempster P

  10. Oh man, why did he keep writing that?
  11. With Angelo I hated the insistence on going after second (or worse) tier veterans for starting gigs. But I like the idea of a veteran to challenge both tackles. The downside is he's almost a lock to start with the competition he'd be going up against.
  12. I'd be very skeptical of a DB who vaults up the boards based on the underwear olympics. Wasn't he considered no more than a 3-4th rounder going in?
  13. I do like the idea of DT here, although don't know much about this guy.
  14. Yummy, something to distract me from a conference call this afternoon.

  16. Konz was gone before. I wouldn't want to reach for anybody here, not with this team's many needs. No reason to reach. What's the best RB available? Has anybody good slipped. Any interesting LB available?
  17. If everything went well. You can't just ignore the fact that it's the first opportunity for financial security for any of these guys. It's risky as hell to just play out the deal on a year-to-year basis. Signing a "team friendly" deal very early in your major league career, several years before you will get an opportunity to make anything resembling a lifetime's security is the prudent choice. I'd rather take less money and not give them the option year. I'm sure he would have preferred that as well, but the team wanted some upside to guaranteeing a lot of money long before they needed to. The point is there is plenty of room for negotiation on both sides of this type of situation. Player wants security, team wants cost certainty and a chance to lock-in potential for below market value production.

  20. Maholm vs Narveson Do with it what you will.
  21. Not sure how that works. They are already in the organization, so whether they are on the big league club or not, the losses count just the same. If it was something like Indy losing all year to get in position to draft Luck, I could understand, but this losing isn't going to pay off in any meaningful way. There is no Harper out there and they probably aren't even going to get a chance to draft first anyway.
  22. You don't think somebody should be able to be suspended over his words? I didn't say that. I said I'm usually not a fan of when it happens, but do understand why they occur. "Hate seeing" it seems to indicate you don't think it should happen, but, whatever.
  23. I don't understand how a suspension is weird. Firing him over that would have been incredibly stupid. You say something controversial that offends a large portion of your fan base, apologize, get suspended and then back to normal before the next issue distracts everybody.
