    I'm not arguing he shouldn't be called up at all this season, I'm arguing we should leave him down at the very least until late June (when the extra year of team control kicks in), if not until late August (when Super 2 status is eliminated). If we were to call him up for tomorrow's game, you're looking at around 30 extra games this year (using the earlier, June date), which means around 90-120 extra PAs. I don't see that as beneficial enough to give up an extra year of team control of him. Tomorrow's game is in Houston against an NL team. The first game they will need a DH in is in 18 days, and the last game with a DH is 13 days after that. You are talking about a 14 day window where his services could be needed and used appropriately every day, then send him back and a measly 14 day extension to the original window of time he needed to stay in the minors.

    So don't send him back down. It's not going to be a bad thing. Less than ideal, sure, but nothing ideal ever happens in baseball.

    If you call him up in 2 weeks he and LaHair takes turns at 1B/DH during the IL games and then Rizzo can go back down when IL is done, still getting all the benefits of staying in the minors while "there is no room" on the major league roster.

    That provides a lot of value, don't discount it. Who knows what they will do, but don't dismiss the value that possibly provides. I wouldn't dismiss the value, but you sure as hell can discount it.

    They are 13th in OPS and 14th in runs scored. They were one notch worse in each stat in 2006.

    AHHHHHHHHHHHHH, that is not a thing!!!!!! I hated when everybody decided they had to describe Derosa that way. You are a utility player if you can't be a starter but can play multiple positions. There is not such thing as a "super utility" guy. What if you can play a bunch of positions (but none of them really all that well) but you're a very good hitter? Not that I disagree with you on the labels thing. If you are truly a "very good hitter" and can play a bunch of positions, you can play one of them well enough to start.

    the position the guy played in college, traditionally behind the QB and in front of the tailback. As for Winslow, am I wrong in thinking this guy kind of disappeared since his breakout season?

    Elaborate if you would. Because you're totally right, but I'm curious what you've noticed specifically. I haven't taken inventory or anything but just a whole lot of talk about spirit and guttiness carrying the day plus choking and things like missed opportunities weighing on teams and players for the rest of the game. Every positive play is described as a gutsy or brave display of character rather than just a really talented futbol player making a good play.

    I've really enjoyed the last few weeks of futbol viewing, but man, it really amazes me how much unchecked meatballism and conventional wisdom style nonsense gets thrown into every discussion about the sport.

    If he gets extremely hot during that stretch I would suggest that, in and of itself, is quite a bit of upside. Sure, ideally you keep him down there to put off the future cost, but if he does come up earlier, it's not like its going to be a damaging financial setback to the team. Also, stemming the bleeding of fan interest this summer will have its own value. Odds are you can call him up for 2 weeks and send him back down and everything will be essentially the same. Maybe he gets incredibly hot and you can't sent him back, but so be it.

    LaHair has a sub 500 OPS in his last 7 and sub 700 in his last 14. It could be helpful to sit him a little bit to keep his overall numbers high and maybe have some guys lose track of how he's been pitched the past couple weeks.

    \ Why bother? This season is a lost cause anyways. Let him stay down in Iowa until they can be sure he will be under control for another year and call him up. Sure, but if the manager wants DH flexibility and people want to see the guy, you can call him up the day they go to MIN, let him stay around for the DET/BOS home series and then send him back down after the WS series. It's 13 days of service, a little taste of Wrigley in the summer, and when interleague is done you still have the excuse of no room for the guy.

    Honestly, I'm not sure how these get included as intriguing. A guy who could fill AA/AAA utility roles?

    And I don't think he thought this team was going to be on pace to lose 100 games. he probably thought they could be respectable and he thought he could be as well, but the team sucks and he's sucked so he lost his desire to continue

    I don't think he saw this team being so bad so early. There was still hope at the time they brought him back that they would actually go out and bring in players to help the team. But they are winning less than 40% of their games and he's been terrible, so I think that plays a part. Respect your opinion, but will have to totally disagree. I'm quite certain he knew the team wasn't going to be good, and no, there wasn't much hope that when he signed that they were going to bring in players to help considering it was already the middle of January. there were still players out there to be signed
